Safe Speeding - Is There Such A Thing?

People just need to focus on the task of not running into anything, everything else (keeping eyes attached to the speedo included) can wait.

The trouble is, in most cars today you need to watch the speedo, I should say, be aware of it at all times, the slightest pressure on the throttle and you can be 10klm + over the limit on the freeway. I use my GPS to keep me on the ball without watching the speedo, but the beeping will drive you nuts :)

Some cars are worse than others for this.

And that is exactly the bit I have an issue with. If you are paying attension to your surroundings, flowing with traffic etc etc, going a bit over the posted limit should not be an issue.

Going 700km/hr through a school zone or built up area, sure, throw the fricking book at em.

Safe speeding, yes and no.

There are to many variables to say yes or no as a definitive answer, druggies,drunks, kids, animals, trucks, weather, idiots, pushbikes, motorbikes, road conditions including surface type (on camber/off camber/crossfall) and/or contaminates (diesel/water/loose surface/pot holes/oil).

Not to mention the idiots who enter a corner to hot and cannot stay in their lane, this can be a issue if you to are pushing your car through a corner with minimal fudge factor, keep a eye out at the local twisties for car and bike parts on the side of the road.

Me, I like to give it a squirt now and then, rarely floor it though, and I try and stick to the speed limit and constantly scan the road surroundings and surface, I've still been rear ended when stopped at lights and have had a few close calls due to evading wayward idiots who think they are awesome or just not paying attention.

In the end if you want to go fast there is only 1 place to do it and its at the track, at least that way if you do, f**k up or have a mechanical failure that puts you in a wall or on your roof its hopefully just you that will wear the hurt.

Track days can be the most fun you can have with your pants on but can get expensive, drag days are cheap, and at a drag day you can find out how slow you really are.....

From my experience most people who speed around the streets get rather upset when they find out how slow they really are at a track or how slow their "high performance" car really is.

OR, their to POV to afford a few dollars (they can of course spend money on useless modifications and stickers).

Disclaimer: needing to speed is a personal choice not something you need to do, if you have to speed to get somewhere on time then your personal administration is flawed, hopefully you only end up with a ticket and not some toe tags.

On a final note: If I'm overtaking you on your left, your in the wrong lane.

I'm 22. I dip over the limit from time to time to get clear of traffic. Nobody wants to be stuck behind a frequently stopping bus or a slow moving truck, and sometimes to get around them you have to speed for a little bit. Once I've got a bit of space in my lane I'm pretty content to cruise at the limit.

On the motorways it's a little different. You could be doing 120 in the right lane and people will still go around you to undertake. It seems like almost everybody speeds, and it's probably worth considering upping the limit on motorways.

Crossing Roseville Bridge. Go down the hill, bunch of cars riding each others asses doing 60kph in the right hand lane. As soon as we start going up the other side, all the cars start doing 90!

If you can't maintain speed, you shouldn't drive.

Come on with all these super responsive setups, you should be able to pass in a heartbeat. Oh that's right you refuse to gear down... he he he

When I have a car, I do not mind dropping down a gear, but 3 gears seems a bit much to overtake at 60. lol

If you had ever driven mine when I bought it, you would have stuffed a V8 in it, you had to speed if you wanted to get anywhere, or drive around in 2nd or 3rd in 50/60 zones unless it was dead flat roads , lol

Experienced this yesterday, driver varying between 75-85 in 100 zone, as soon as the overtaking lane appears, speeds up to 110.

Good thing my Liberty is turbocharged. Got past the car quickly before he reached 100.

My pet hate and up here it is not only on rare occasions, it is 8 times out of 10 , it drives me nuts and sometimes to be a little stupid, just have to get past before they go back to 80 :special:

Speeding isn't safe, but neither is driving. It's all risks and reducing them or increasing them, as has been mentioned. I drive like what society would call an idiot, and often...but much less when other cars are around me or in adverse conditions and that's my risk reduction.

Speed limits are set at a certain level to cater for the lowest common denominator and poor conditions(and to raise revenue!). This is your unintelligent, slow reflexed person in a shitty car. You're not going to instantly kill someone the moment you step above the speed limit; it only increases risk and, yes, there is safer speeding and it comes from a more capable driver doing it in a more capable car. This is someone who has very good reflexes, experience as a road user / can predict situations, can multi task, can pull their way out of a shitty situation, has good depth perception, fast reaction times, good eye sight, pays attention and takes in everything around them, not just 3 metres directly in front of them (which seems to be 90% of the driving population as far as I know). But you can't have different speed limits for different people in different cars, so we're stuck with what 80 year old Deloris can safely do in her 1980 Mercedes 280E...assuming she even does the speed limit.

So yes I've sped plenty, but I've done it knowing that even though I can get booked for it, as long as I'm doing the above I'm still a safer driver in a lot of ways than that idiot woman in the SUV who tried to merge me off the road without indicating when changing lanes.

The worst thing people do is step out of their houses and into a car thinking of it as just an a-b daily routine/task and not a 1.5t +/- piece of metal that can kill if you turn a steering wheel 45 degrees the wrong way or fall asleep at it.

I just do not do stupid shit with other people or cars around, scared a few rabbits, foxes and Roos, well the Roos scared me

The blokes showing off for their mates are going to cop it all the time and the hoon laws do not F around!

You really have to push these GTRs to spin and that is how I like it, well I do miss it :(

    • I'll just leave this quick tip here after reading your joys of getting the car in the air. It should take no more then 10 minutes to get the car safely up on stands.  So for the front, jack on the tow recovery points (marked in red). Put the jack stands under the lower control arm mounting point (marked in yellow). This photo is of a R34 GTR, however the process is the same. For the rear, jack under the diff (marked in red). Put the jack stands under the rear subframe or where the lower control arm mounting point (marked in yellow). Which point you use will depend on your stand, pick a nice stable point.  You've probably already read this but it's worth repeating. When jacking up the car or using stands, stay away from the chassis rails/pinch welds. Even the factory jack point, stay away from that too unless using a factory jack. I used those jack points for years without issue until I turned into an old man and bought a QuickJack lol.

    • Hi all, From the western suburbs here. Just got my 2000 R34 GTT registered today! Got it imported from Japan through a mate who is doing them and managed to find a decent one. This one has only done 110,000 Km and had no body rust etc. so was very happy. I used to own a 25Gt back in 2015 (ate Ramen noodles for years to save up for it), but unfortunately, it got stolen TEN DAYS after I bought it!! Came back from Uni and the car was missing - cops found it in Springvale a month later with a lot of needles  😒 It was too late by then and I had moved on to a different car (300ZX), and after that one got broken into around 2018, I was in a very bad place and decided I would never buy a car again because it was just pointless!!! ~yeah, I have some very bad mojo~ 🥺 But now, with a stable job and a secure garage, I thought I'd get the R34 4D again but not as a daily! I love the R34s but a GTR is still a bit off my pay grade so settled for the GTT instead.    The first step for me is to get this car serviced and have all fluids, belts and spark plugs changed. I might do the brakes at one point too but atm they are fine, the fluids are what I want changed since this car probably sat in a garage for a long time. I'll then get some coilovers since the suspension needs to be changed anyway (the dust cover kit is disintegrating). I'll also upgrade my car alarm to a Viper system and then look at rims and tyres (I'm a sucker for TE37s - might have enough saved in another 3 years for that).   Today: I was planning to do the oil, coolant, air filter and fuel filter change this week. Started on the oil change today and MY GOD what a pain!! I used to think the 300ZX engine bay was cramped - oh I was so wrong! 😂 I've done the usual services on my cars before so it was not like I was going in blind. I looked up all the forum details about what oils to use, what coolant to use, what points to use to jack the car or place stands etc but I did not expect it to be this hard. Long story short - all I managed to do was the oil and filter change. I think I might end up taking it to a mechanic for a coolant change because my SCA stands and trolley jack just can't get far enough underneath to the cross-member and I don't want to be crushed under my favourite car....yet. Side note: In Dandenong, there used to be a shop that lets you hire their hoists - does anyone know if they have those around? I can't seem to find the Dandenong place anymore. I contacted them off FB almost 6 years ago and I'm not in it now. If anyone know of one, that would save me some time going to a mechanic for the basic services. Oil: Dark and gooey but no metal pieces. Oil Filter: Was a b***h to take off but no red flags Air filter: Yucky! Was black (Smells like fuel which makes me think it may have been running rich? - am I way off?)   Concerns: I have but one concern atm and that is that there was a very small amount of oil leaking where the engine and the transmission connect (Automatic). It may be the rear seal? It's not a massive leak and it does not affect the oil pressures or leak oil all along the driveway. It's been falling into the cover this whole time. I've taken the cover off so I can check the garage floor from time to time.  I also have not seen my engine temperature gauge ever sit at cold and slowly move up to the right spot, but that might be because every time I saw the car today, it was running. I'll check that again tomorrow. ATM it just sits right in the middle. I may just be paranoid but I don't want an overheating engine while my gauges say everything is fine. 🙈 Other than that, I'm very happy with the car! Feels like it's about time I went back to spending my weekends driving or cutting my arm on stupid sh*t in the engine bay.   PS: I will post a pic later on because I underestimated soooo badly today and it was dark by the time I finished! PPS: I broke the two damn plastic pins that hold the intake funnel section to the front bar. This is the piece made to bring cold air to the airbox. The connection to the airbox is fone, but the two clips just broke off! Should I be worried? Anyone else done that?
