Ugh... Looks like they just use the AV inputs to connect an external device. I tried that and the quality was horrible. (Both audio and video) - plus there was no touchscreen - perhaps they also stick an overlay on... If it is this solution though, then their pricing is batsh1t insane.

ok i got a few answers off them it is indeed an entertainment system, but i gather you can switch jap system to this also touchscreen works And bose audio phone/bluetooth they recon it takes 1.5 days to do,and say its a complicated install, you can take that anyway you like i guess..

Chuckle. I'm not sure what they think a "complicated install" is but I wouldn't class it as such. probably 2-3 hours work if you know how to disassemble the dash and get the existing unit out. Even being charitable and hoping they use an RGB input (their photos look like ugly composite video input) it's not that hard.

Seems like a _LOT_ of labour to charge to install an approx $450 NZD device.

Yeah, for that kind of money, they can go jump. I realise it's not a quick case of plug 'n' play but that's exorbitant for what the end result is.

Personally, I like the stock AV headunit and it's complemented well by the audio upgrades I've made. However, the GPS solution I've implemented, which is just a MirrorLink device to screen mirror my phone via a composite video output, cost me only $40 if I remember correctly, took me about 20 minutes to neatly install and gives a reasonable result considering it's composite video.

I can only imagine these jokers would want to charge around $500 for even that small effort.

Heh - I put a mirrorlink unit in my car as well for similar $$$ but then like an idiot noticed that the video screen is locked out when moving :-( Should have checked that first I guess :-)

Plus the bluetooth integration with the built in headunit is now perfect (was flaky until an android update stabilised it a few months ago) so I wouldn't want to have to use the Audio input of the AV (to use mirrorlink for GPS and also have music and podcasts by phone)... Yes I could add a bluetooth bridge and put that into the audio inputs - in fact I did, but it's not as good as the built in bluetooth.

And to my knowledge it's not possible to runthe video input at the same time as the main head unit sound... If it was I would probably look into somehow making the mirrorlink system work while moving.

Thankfully in my case, though I've found no signs of tampering with the wiring or the headunit itself, my screen is always on in DVD/TV/AUX mode.

As for running both audio and Mirrorlink together, in my case it works out great because my Sony ZX1 is my actual audio source for all my FLAC files and the Mirrorlink feeds the video. Granted, I don't hear any audio directions from the phone's GPS but then again, I used to read a street directory back in the day while driving so no big deal for this old school'er.

But in your case, you should be able to Mirrorlink your GPS app on your phone but still play audio through the Mirrorlink at the same time, as a compromise, no? That way you will be able to pass audio through the headunit and control that audio with it, in the very least treble, bass and volume controls.

I haven't tried it on mine but since the RCAs are sitting there, I'll give it a crack and report back.

Oh it will work the way you say but I'll miss the steering wheel next track buttons, and the actual quality through the AV input was rubbish when I last used it.

The main issue is the no video while moving and that doesn't look too easy to solve.

Nah, the AV input is nice and clean on these vehicles, albeit about 6dB quieter than the CD player. Without knowing the circuit topology, my best educated guess would be it's an unbalanced source as opposed to the balanced internal connectivity of the CD source.

If you believe it sounds horrible, I'm willing to bet that it's your source that's to blame. I use the Sony NW-ZX1 on mine and it sounds as good as a car stereo can be expected to sound. If you're using a phone as your source, generally speaking, phones suck. There are some exceptions to that rule but to my ears, nothing beats having a dedicated player for the task.

Can't explain what happened with my video still functioning while driving though. Maybe I got lucky or there's a clever guy in Japan who modifies the head units internally to prevent the blackout.
