Hey guys

I am starting to shop around for a new ECu for my car and have been trying to really nut out what would be better for me and what I want. To be honest I'm tossing between the Wolf 3d plug and play and the well tested Power FC.

I realise some of the differet features that they have (rotational idle - launch control) and they all seam really good... But my main concern is Pinging/knock detection. I realise that the Power fc will detect knock but do nothing about it accept tell you that it is going on.

Question is.. what does the Wolf 3d have or do to tell you what is going on?

Hi riceline, firstly let me say I personally like the PFC because it warns you that there is a detonation problem by flashing the dashboard warning light. I would much rather it do that than say retard the ignition, dump some fuel in and cover up for the fact that there is a problem. All I know is, suddenly the car doesn't go very well, but I have no idea when it started or why!

Secondly, what is it that causes the detonation that I need to protect the engine from? If the ignition timing is too far advanced, then cutting the ignition is a bit of a drastic way to fix it. Plus it doesn’t really FIX IT, it simply masks the problem. Same for lean A/F ratios etc etc.

Personally I think there is a better way, by setting up the maps for engine temp and boost you can “protect the engine” and still have the warning. For example, if the detonation would have been caused by too high engine water temp, such as experienced on a very hot day. What I would do is set up the maps so that when the PFC encounters high water temp it adds enough fuel to prevent detonation. Plus the extra fuel helps lower the combustion temperature which may well stop the overheating. You could do the same for excessively high inlet temperature (on a GTR) or oil temp or low fuel pressure or low water pressure (using the analogue channels of a Datalogit system). If you measure the fuel pressure at the fuel rail, then that covers things like blocked fuel filters or failing fuel pumps. Similarly low water pressure covers busted radiator hoses, hole in the radiator, air in cooling system etc.

I can see these things on the Datalog, I know that the engine isn’t running well from 1.15 pm today due to low water pressure. Plus the dashboard warning light flashed at the time and I could back off, or better still, stop and fill up the radiator.

I am not saying that I can’t do this sort of stuff with a Wolf, or other ECU’s for that matter. What I am saying is, personally, I would much rather have a warning light and some mapped protection, than an ECU that simply covers up the problem or worse still goes into limp home mode at the first unusual occurrence.

Steve while this thread has your attention, do you have the wiring diagram for the R33 auto ecu? I have read in your other posts to get the gearchange working properly i have to tap into the TPS and tacho signals of the auto ecu? I just want to confirm if this is all thats needed?

    • But there's the archetype for the name plate! Here's my view on that stupid TÜV ruleset. Buy a brand name aftermarket piece of equipment. In this case, the Mines front pipe we're talking about. Get it TÜV certified on the car. Damage the underside of it, say on a speed bump. Cut out the damaged section, replace with fresh metal. (For the sake of the argument only), continue doing that to the whole pipe until it is all gone, replaced with new metal. Is this grandfather's axe still the same front pipe? The design hasn't changed (much). The pipe walls are in the same places. The flanges are in the same places. It is functionally identical. How does this differ from a pipe that is ever so slightly different in fabrication (ie the number of welds in it, a few mm here and there in terms of where the pipes run, are joined, etc)? Anyone with 0.5% of a brain can see that there is absolutely no way that the performance (power, environmental aspects, noise, etc etc) of it can be any different than the genuine Mines pipe. Maybe even Mines made 2 versions of this design, with the same differences. How would anyone (say a TÜV inspector) ever be able to differentiate between them? And yet, they are so bloody anally retentive about this stuff. Mad. How upset would they be if you had the wrong spring washers on the flanges?

    • After a fairly extensive search using Japanese terms and checking Minkara etc, I couldn't find anything even close to your front pipe in the photos. I'm no expert but the two pipes merge really close to the flange connected to the catalytic converter which is rather unique from what I've seen, which makes me think it's more than likely a custom front pipe. The welds and 'more pipe sections than usual for a brand name pipe' makes it seem like a custom one.  Here's some photos of an old Mine's front pipe. You can see that it's just 4 pipe sections as opposed to 6, and arguably looks more like a 'production' front pipe:
