Hi Lads,

Im after some advice. A mate of mine has an r34 GTR with 4.11 front diff gears. after some research it appears an r33 GTR diff looks very similar to and r34 housing/drive shaft flanges/ABS etc and are 4.11.

Is it possible to grab an r33 GTR rear diff assembly and bolt it in to the 34?

R33 has different rear diff ratio to a 34. Because one has a 5 speed gb and the other a 6

Kafish? :)

I am assuming his mates 34R is not running and they have a 4:1 diff in the front and they are wondering if they can fit a 4:1 diff from a 33 to their 34. If the car is runing with different front and rear diff ratio, we would have seen an epic fail video :)

I know the diffs are interchangeable because I am about to do this conversion. If all goes well, I should get it done this weekend.

The gearbox it self has got nothing to do with the diff. From what people say, the first gear in Getrag will be useless after a 4:1 convo.

Hey Bob - how is it going?

  • 2 weeks later...

R34 already has 4.1 front - just looking for a rear to match it.

This bloke

Its all done and was pretty much a bolt in deal. Just swapped over the rear cover to the original r34 one. As this 34 is not a Vspec we didnt have to deal with active LSD's.

to those concerned about short ratios with the 6 spd dont be. Around town the thing is spot on. Sure it might struggle down the main straight at EC but everywhere else its great.

For future referenc, a R32 diff can also be used if you are ready to stuff around.

- the R32 ABS rings are differnt. 46 teeth on both 32 & 34 but the gaps are wider on 34. So the rings have to be swapped.

-R32 short axles do not fit 34 centre - different spline pattern. Swap the axles around. Don't know if aftermarket centers resolve this issue.

Gearing not as bad first thought.

Speedo is understandably read incorrect values for speed.

Speedo is out as you say, understandably. I actually think the 1st gear is a little long with the original 3.54.

The r33 diff housing did have some additional mount points on the casting that we thought might be a problem but upon stuffing it in it didnt touch anywhere and had a minimum of 10mm clearance to the body.

will update once more kms are put on by the owner.

PS. the job itself is piss easy for a weekend warrior mechanical type.

    • Thanks for that.... If only I could do something once and be happy with that, like some people do....
    • I had no transmission at all so I managed to find a big box manual gearbox from an R34 GTT for an insanely good price in EU. I converted it to push type which cost more than the transmission almost, with parts from Amayama! These engines are very strong and can put out decent power with a properly sized turbo. You can save on money from parts like pistons and rods, and invest those in the transmission and other parts. I suggest you join the RB20 Enthusiasts facebook group, plenty of info and almost daily posts there about 20DE/DET/Neo+T builds. (I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by mentioning third party platforms, just trying to help the buddy out)
    • Yeah, having tried all of those methods including BBQ+recipro/hacksaw, I ended up buying a bush press kit under $150 that works well, like this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/355967727167?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-154756-20017-0&ssspo=sfmmuhxgqhm&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=dJvnaZ11TB-&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY It basically has a range of pushers and cups with threaded rods between to press out a range of large bushes. The problem with any sawing solution is minimising damage to the subframe side, although it probably needs a quick sand afterwards no matter what solution you try due to damage
    • Hi. Thanks for the answer. I do not have instagram 😄 I too considering turbo the RB20DE NEO 🙂 But i think i upgrade the gearbox first or at least buy new.
