Honestly though, go drive a new performance car and you will see why i say GTR's feel like dinosaurs.

In saying that everything these days is electric, it's nice having a mechanical feeling car in the R. That's probably what i love most.

But like i said. Realistically if my GTR was driven more than a few times a month, and i didn't love it like i did. I would have been much better off buying a C63 that is a few years old or possibly an M3 (and yes the $ i have spent on this car is pretty much equal to a few years old C63 or M3).

Hell you even have cars like the Golf R. That will walk tails around most GTR's, especially if it is chipped. Or even the new focus ST will be just as good...

Point is, my GTR is 26 years old. I can't drive it daily, hell i can hardly drive it weekly without issues. value for money just isn't there anymore. But in saying that, it isn't going anywhere. This car is special to me, hence why i have no issues with the $ i have to spend on it. However i am under no delusions that these cars are the bees knees like they used to be, because to be blunt, they are not.

A properly tweaked one around a proper track like Phillip Island they are!.................if they don't break.

Lets not forget they were designed as a tarmac circuit racer. They weren't that refined next to cars designed to be fast taxi's even in their day. Take them to the track and if they don't explode, you'll do well against most things - if you know how to steer.

Correct, but we are not talking about taking them around phillip island. And again like you said "If" they don't break. I'd take an Evo 9 over a GTR as a track car these days.

I'm a bit different - I'd take a GTR over a EVO for a track car still. More $ but more fun and if I learn how to steer it properly - be faster.....if they don't explode ;)

Road on the other hand - EVO all the way. It is more practical being a Lancer after all....

If your GTR is kept in good condition, what keeps braking ?

Or is this only when you track and trash your cars they keep going POP ??

mate either way the cars are 25 years old. "keeping it in good condition" means replacing gearboxes, diffs, turbos, probably a whole new engine at some point, new suspension.

Even if it doesn't break, the maintenance cost is still there.

Maintenance costs... just like any other machinery ever created.

Skylines aren't so bad, R32s are relatively simple to work on (no complex sub systems that you need to scan computers to figure out, e.g. MB, BMW, VAG).

Mine's held up pretty well. Keep the engine relatively stock and change out what breaks/wears.

Skylines break like any other modified car does. Maintenance is cheap.

Brand new 5 spead Gearbox $3000, rebuilt 1500, Dsg upward of 5k

Diff 400, priced a C63 diff lately? I would be scared to.

Gearbox, diff's and transfer case breaks due to launching at the limiter and flat shifting, like any other AWD car.

Oil pump breaks due to limited bashing, bottom end breaks due to high G corners on stickies at 7000 rpm+ with a standard sump, like any car.

Engine detonates due to no surge tank at high Gs on stickies and fuel starvation like any other car.

Name one 350 to 400 wkw car with that amount of traction that won't break.

Fark my mate's friend just spent $10+k fixing his drive line on his 400+kw G6E which cost him 50k to buy and has poured heaps of other money into it.

IMO gtrs are cheap to run and great performance for your $ if you know its limits, but every modified 400kw car have limits. If you go over the limits they will break.

Drive GTRs daily, look after them and they won't break and are cheap to run maintenance wise.

If anything its a testament to how well skylines are built being the age they are to take a life time of beatings and still go strong, if they break its because they are highly thrashed/modified, or the cars a nugget and likly the driver too.

You're right, or people that own them want to push their limits, that are pretty high already, that's fine, its your car and do what you want, but don't whine like a princess when shit breaks.

Put a pair of semis on a 240 kw chipped commo and do a couple of launches and see shit fall apart like you have just smashed it with a sledge hammer.

haha, that's what I did and realistically that is what is needed to be done if you truly want an old performance car to perform after being flogged for so long.

Different if you just want to push every last pony out of them and hang on until they go POP!

I've had my 34R for 3+ years now. Never broken down once. Has been running 20psi and 300rwkw + all day every day with only bolt on supporting mods.

But I dont go limiter bashing or side step the clutch at 7000+rpm.

I maintain oils and fluids every 5K or so.

And it helps that I spent the money early on importing a clean, non modified example
