GOT SUM's RB34

Recommended Posts

Got some decent progress after work yesterday and also today. Got the ECU all wired and passenger side interior all back together. Kept the wiring up nice and high to avoid people standing on it. Got the surge tank relays rewired and tidied up the pump wiring and cut a hole to bring the cables through.

I found a spare USB cable I had lying around so I decided to cut it up and see if I could use it for my CAN 1 bus. Turned out one of the pins I needed was to the shield of the cable so i cut it up and desoldered it and resoldered to the correct pins.

Had the issue with the powersteering hose hitting the A/C compressor and fan shroud. I pulled the bracket off and modified it to remove the front mounting point which now clears it all. Will keep an eye on it to see if theres any signs of fouling once it's up and running.

Build is looking great!

did you end up wiring in a PWM signal to power steering to remove HICAS?

Thanks mate!

Nah I haven't. That'll be a job for ron once she's running.

Not much has happened lately being so busy at work. I picked up some liquid nails to seal/secure the shifter dropbox I made up. Test fitted it and I had to move someof the holes slightly to line up. Modified the holes and decided to take the sharp corners off it as well and round them down.

Next on the list was powersteering res relocation. I modified the powersteering bracket that my made 3D printed and managed to get it to pickup a couple of stock bolt holes. Pretty tight fitment, hopefully the hoses have enough flex to not kink on the sharp bend.

Have been playing around on the Link setting bits and pieces up. Got the DBW all setup and turned on and the Link and TCU talking to eachother. Still need to play around with Can a bit more as I only had data showing up on the TCU so far.

Been getting some good progress on the car over the last week. Everything is now plumbed and wired. We have ECU to TCU comms working. I just need to send through some values from ECU to the dash so I can have a few things showing up there.

Fluids are in now and so far so good. Had a couple of small leaks from some hardline fittings but they've been rectified. I found a small leak and tracked it down to fuel slowly weeping from the fuel pressure sensor connector. Will get a new one ordered next week and we should be good to go.

Dropped her down and rolled her out onto the driveway for a much needed wash.

Jacked her back up this morning and managed to get another 1L of oil into the trans and bolted the tailshaft back in.

Replaced the FP sensor last week and checked for any other leaks. All looks good so far. Just need to wait for my mate to come over now and get it started.

My new amp turned up on Monday, so I got stuck in and wired it up and made some brackets to mount it in next to the battery late last night to have it all back together for when my mate came over this morning.

Checked over the car this morning, went over some of the new settings that differ to the old G4+ and set the timing. Got her started up and went over the car to check for any leaks.

Found a small leak coming from the oil filter block. Made sure all the hoses were tightened and pulled a suspect 1/8npt bung out and resealed it. Will have to wait until we start it up next to confirm the leaks stopped.

We got the 8hp up to temp to do the oil fill, ran it through a couple of gears and got it all topped up. So good to see the wheels spinning!

Need to have a look at the flex sensor wiring as we're getting an error on it. Once that's sorted and I've got the interior back together I'll ship it down to my mates shop and get it run in on the dyno and start putting some km's on her!

Dropped the car down to my mates shop on the 19th to get it on the dyno. Ran the motor in and dropped the running in oil and filter and filled it up with some engine oil.

Monday arvo I went down and we got a tune in her. Had a fun time trying to get it to hook up on the rollers. We end up having to roll into the throttle, reaching full throttle at around 6k. Made 23psi on gate then tapered off to 20psi up the top and spat out a healthy 700rwhp.

We had a slight voltage issue which was dropping ecu volts to around 11.8v so we called it quits and on Tuesday I went down and ran a couple of new power feeds to the ECU and DBW relays. Have yet to test it as we were trying to get things sent into the ECU from the TCU over CAN. We've now got oil temp, programme switch and gear position. Still working on gearbox speed, but have been told what to do so hopefully that will sort it.

Once we've got speed working, we can start setting up the gear shift cuts and do some clutch adaptations in the TCU.

Should have the majority of it setup this week and go over the tune to see how it is now with the new power wire.

Was slack this time, didnt get any full runs as I was watching the TCU data on the laptop.

Been slowly chipping away at the car for the last couple of weeks. Rewired the relays for ecu power, had a slight oil leak from the tarks oil block so ordered a new one and got it on. Worked on the CAN comms to ECU and got speed and torque reduction working. Couldn't get blip to work.

We did a run to test voltage and was all nice and stable now. Managed to get the owner from Lamik to remote in and check what was going on to see why blip wasnt working. I had a 4yr old file in it that didn't have blip back then. Stopped tuning and he upgraded it all to the latest version and set up all the torque parameters. Did a couple of runs and he gave the all good.

Tuneup was a fair bit off with the extra voltage so he went back through and retuned fuel map and gave it a few runs and spat out 736whp.

Pulled it off the dyno and got it ready to drive home yesterday. Decided to go fill it up before the drive. Filled it up with 59L... I didn't know the tank was 65L.

Drive home was nice, shifts are pretty smooth for out of the box with mo adapations. Power on 18s is stupid haha, spins tyres instantly. Very light throttle and shifting up gears feels awesome! Mate followed me back to drop my ute off and drove him back to the shop via the highway. 100km with the windows up and exhaust shut the car is near silent. Get a bit of lifter noise coming through and road noise.

Ordered a new factory key a few weeks ago that arrived this week. Programming instructions were in japanese so I had a fun time trying to translate it all to something that made sense. Tried a few different things that I found on the internet and finally got a decent translation that worked but remote wouldnt link up. Pulled the battery it came with out and checked volts and read 0.2v. Well and truly dead. Found a cr1620 in the random box everyone had above the fridge and it fit in. Went out and tried to programme it again and it worked!

Ordered some new aircon vents and ignition surround to replace my broken ones. Out of the 3 vents i ordered 2 were broken, am yet to send them back for refund/exchange. Will get the good parts installed when I have some time.

Been doing a little bit of driving the last week. Dialling in the gearbox bit by bit. Had to take a few piccies for insurance.

Picked up some new PSR 275/40r18 to test out. Got them fitted up on Friday and popped them on for the drive today.

I got some new Penrite 80w140 progear diff oil as the diff was making a right racket back there, especially in tight low speed stuff. Now I can barely notice it.

Took it for a good drive today with the missus and kids, about a 1hr 20 round trip. The 8hp definitely transforms the car. Nice quick smooth changes in comfort mode and driving at 17-1800rpm on the highway at 100 to sharp snappy shifts when you want to put the boot down. Daughter decided it would be a nice time to have a sleep while we were cruising around 🤣

Did a light hit to the speed limit on the way home. Accidently went first off the lights then shifted 2 3rd and put a little bit down through 4th and end up in 5th.

?awesome work mate, car is looking and sounding great. so you recommend the 8hp swap?

Thanks mate! Yeah 100% its totally transformed the car. Little vid while driving to work. Speedo needs a recal but thats about 100km/h on the way to work. Sits around the 18-1900 rpm mark with 3.69 gear and the 275/40r18s. Driving around normally is a lot better, sit there and accelerate, brake and steer. Or flick it over into manual mode and choose what you want it to do.

Got a little bit of fine tuning to do regarding shift points. Ive set up 3 auto modes each one getting higher rpm shifts.

Went for a spin with my mate on the weekend and managed to hold the throttle flat and pull through 3rd, 4th and a bit of 5th. First time I've seen the shift lights come on 😅

what 8HP did you end up with? and do you mind sharing what its cost to get it going? i'm on borrowed time with my 25t box, and am looking at options, either a speedtek gearset or a 8hp75

It's an 8hp75. Cost me about 11k for box, tcu, shifter, cooler and adapter kit. I did all the wiring myself, no idea how much that cost me. And then obviously AN lines and fittings. Plus tailshaft which was $18-1900 then fluid for box. All up probably looking at around 15k. Not sure what the prices are like these days as I bought it all a couple yrs ago.

Why does everyone film these days in psychopath mode and lose 60% of the screen? :P

And I never realised until now you're in Bris! For some reason I thought Canada, I must have been mixxing this up with another build thread. I'll need to keep my eyes peeled to play spotto now!

    • Thanks mate yeop be good ! Understand the kid thing for sure lucky mines a bit older and I can bring him over etc he gets treated like a rockstar 😁 go the RB   yeop wont be doing this forever prob so why not 100% everyones always been good but going back this year was different and more interaction and def more support Def thought about changing uprights etc waiting for @Komdotkomto sort out whats needed for those and do the r & d haha  but yeah hard thing for gtst nothing direct fit as all made for GTR which is slightly diff but moving to the r35 gtr bearing will be big improvement - its just budget allocation as its a $10K to $30K exercise dependent on how mild or wild you go and seems something always comes up - ontop of the crazy travel / racing
    • Great write up. Always good to record everything to look back in the future and reminisce. How good is the motorsport community with helping out when needed.  Should be pretty proud of the result you achieved for the little amount of laps you've done there. Also good you have the drive to do better too ,I'm sure a 1.29 will happen next year.  You thought about a front end upgrade? New upright and arms with better geometry also allow a better bearing your not replacing every time.
    • Cracker read mate! Would be nice to meet you soon, probably when the kids are a bit older and I'll take them along to see the world's fastest 4 door skyline
    • OK WTAC '24 adventures - dont know if anyone wants to hear it past whats been put out already but hey I'll put some of it out anyway and try give some insight   Summary : end result - 6th open class and 1.31.1 lap   How'd we get that   Following the above after Aus Time Attack at Winton and driving the car up to Sydney to store the rb2.8 went in so got to fly over to Sydney the Monday before the event     The car was with Greg at Sydney Composites workshop - we got straight to work that arvo changing out the front wheel bearings as they flog out allll the time.   A new bonnet was being made and my goodness its nice !  also new bigger canards were put on as I was the first one to trial the new canards and after testing from others bigger basically proved to be better rather than my initial cut down version.   We also did ride height changes and setup was there till 1am Wed morning but got it all done     A big focus this year was to get me some seat time on SMP - laps for me = good so has an extra prac Wed morning to roll around so up at 6am to track     Basically 2 quick sessions and 3 'hot laps' we quickly worked out that the custom red / golds  MCA's I had in werent valved strong enough to hold up all the new aero at these speeds, we suspected at Winton but were hoping... but alas nope. Also the tyres I had on from Winton were gone and just down right dangerous haha   So... some appropriately valved MCA golds were sources from Canberra and driven up straight to the track for me to borrow and retro fitted with my current stuff and some better used tyres put on from Xtreme.     Got into the arvo where I had to take more prac spot so took it - we got 2 x goes at a lap but the setup was wrong and was porposing like crazy so aborted each one but we got it sorted correctly after but didnt get to go out again   WTAC official prac Thurs   Did 3 sessions of 1 lap each time no power - suspension better few tweeks here and there and got to get a little bit of a groove back all seemed OK   We found the car getting back to some understeer because we still had the old rear suspension in and it couldnt handle the aero load but had no options so had to work around it ... it ended up scraping the rear diffuser that sits quite away off the ground that how much it was !   WTAC - Competition day 1     Morning Session - usually the best - wound it up had a crack was good but safe and not the max from a push p.o.v 1.31.6   The wind then picked up as did temp went out just for a lap on no power for second session did a solid 1.33 totally sat out the last session as no point due to track conditions   WTAC - Competition day 2   Morning session - full send !  - ran it hard down the front straight as I got to T1 turn in car faulted and switched off - tried to do another lap after resetting tyre pressures and fuel but was not working properly and got blocked and then had red flag anyway haha - bad   Long story short - the balancer had gone and as well took the DBW with it     Organized chaos ensued - between my team - Dahtones and Herman and just about everyone else we got everything needed and a new 1500 ATI put on - luckily thee was a Bosch motorsport stand in trader ally and they let us take the DBW they had on display to put on my car !  legends   So at this point we've only done 1 real lap , missed the good session in the morning missed session 2   Pit walk was upon us and is always so busy but great and met @soviet_merlin and others we also try to get as many kids in the car for fun and photos as possible + meet people     Session  3 - last one - wind was up, track was horrible didn't matter had to go - launched it as good a I could. We changed setup to leave the car in 5th gear into front straight so I didnt have to change down and worked well just held it flat max powas and max rpm - 282 kmph and 217kph around T1 (this has to improve alot )was up 1.2 secs into T8 despite mistakes and as previously said tyres just started going to mush - I couldnt get it around T8 properly lost most of my time picked more up with last 3 corners ended up 5.5 tenths up on previous good lap for new PB but missed out on top 5 by 6 tenths Still not my best lap I shouldve had it to make top 5 but didnt... thats racing     A positive takeaway from an effing tough go at it this year - netting only 2 x hotlaps is both my 1.31 laps combined optimally gave a 1.285 - now I know I'll never be perfect but with a 2.6 sec difference - that means its there it just comes down to consistency to bring that down into an achievable 1.29ish   Our best endeavors to have good seat time and a well sorted car illuded us this year but still got it done as best we could   Good mate made me take a pit pic in front of the car which I look at now and is good as you just dont know I might not be back, or I might !     And then after watching the wild Top 5 shoot out you get to pack up starting at 9pm so pack it all up properly for long trip home   We had a sleep and then yeop ... a near 4 day drive back to Perth. Look I dont actually mind the drive - its not great but its not horrible - but the toll it takes on you after or before competition isnt optimal and neither is the time it takes to do - maybe another option but they are few and expensive I tell you what im basically an international and would be ALOT easier to compete at WTAC if I lived anyway but W.A 😆   All in all hard work, solid result on paper but even if I was still 6th I would've like to at least be in the 1.30s and as close as I was and maybe due to circumstance it still says a 1.31 - which isnt sh*t just not the best .... the W.A crew that comes with me is awesome, im appreciative of getting to work with some of the best on top of that with Brad and some help from the pro drivers, Xtreme and others   So back home back to it - full set of MCA golds going in now which was on the cards anyway and a new 'proper' race radiator to keep it cooler   See what comes up next to race at or in ... that I dont know
    • Acostal came through with a new bracket which should free up some adjustment arm and hit my target of -3.7° camber and 7° caster. (old black, New silver) fitted up and you can see how much shorter it makes the relative length of the caster rod as well as swinging it slightly to free up some misalignment in the bearing   with Caster maxed out short this is how the wheel sits on the car in the air While I was at it, I pulled the wheels off the car to inspect the suspension and noticed this lovely gash. A pity becasue these tyres, while on wear bars, would have had at least one more dry grip day in them. Have a set of AD09 to try out next which I expect will be slower than the CR-s or AR-1 were but better in the rain with a longer life?
