GOT SUM's RB34

Recommended Posts

Got some decent progress after work yesterday and also today. Got the ECU all wired and passenger side interior all back together. Kept the wiring up nice and high to avoid people standing on it. Got the surge tank relays rewired and tidied up the pump wiring and cut a hole to bring the cables through.

I found a spare USB cable I had lying around so I decided to cut it up and see if I could use it for my CAN 1 bus. Turned out one of the pins I needed was to the shield of the cable so i cut it up and desoldered it and resoldered to the correct pins.

Had the issue with the powersteering hose hitting the A/C compressor and fan shroud. I pulled the bracket off and modified it to remove the front mounting point which now clears it all. Will keep an eye on it to see if theres any signs of fouling once it's up and running.

Build is looking great!

did you end up wiring in a PWM signal to power steering to remove HICAS?

Thanks mate!

Nah I haven't. That'll be a job for ron once she's running.

Not much has happened lately being so busy at work. I picked up some liquid nails to seal/secure the shifter dropbox I made up. Test fitted it and I had to move someof the holes slightly to line up. Modified the holes and decided to take the sharp corners off it as well and round them down.

Next on the list was powersteering res relocation. I modified the powersteering bracket that my made 3D printed and managed to get it to pickup a couple of stock bolt holes. Pretty tight fitment, hopefully the hoses have enough flex to not kink on the sharp bend.

Have been playing around on the Link setting bits and pieces up. Got the DBW all setup and turned on and the Link and TCU talking to eachother. Still need to play around with Can a bit more as I only had data showing up on the TCU so far.

Been getting some good progress on the car over the last week. Everything is now plumbed and wired. We have ECU to TCU comms working. I just need to send through some values from ECU to the dash so I can have a few things showing up there.

Fluids are in now and so far so good. Had a couple of small leaks from some hardline fittings but they've been rectified. I found a small leak and tracked it down to fuel slowly weeping from the fuel pressure sensor connector. Will get a new one ordered next week and we should be good to go.

Dropped her down and rolled her out onto the driveway for a much needed wash.

Jacked her back up this morning and managed to get another 1L of oil into the trans and bolted the tailshaft back in.

Replaced the FP sensor last week and checked for any other leaks. All looks good so far. Just need to wait for my mate to come over now and get it started.

My new amp turned up on Monday, so I got stuck in and wired it up and made some brackets to mount it in next to the battery late last night to have it all back together for when my mate came over this morning.

Checked over the car this morning, went over some of the new settings that differ to the old G4+ and set the timing. Got her started up and went over the car to check for any leaks.

Found a small leak coming from the oil filter block. Made sure all the hoses were tightened and pulled a suspect 1/8npt bung out and resealed it. Will have to wait until we start it up next to confirm the leaks stopped.

We got the 8hp up to temp to do the oil fill, ran it through a couple of gears and got it all topped up. So good to see the wheels spinning!

Need to have a look at the flex sensor wiring as we're getting an error on it. Once that's sorted and I've got the interior back together I'll ship it down to my mates shop and get it run in on the dyno and start putting some km's on her!

Dropped the car down to my mates shop on the 19th to get it on the dyno. Ran the motor in and dropped the running in oil and filter and filled it up with some engine oil.

Monday arvo I went down and we got a tune in her. Had a fun time trying to get it to hook up on the rollers. We end up having to roll into the throttle, reaching full throttle at around 6k. Made 23psi on gate then tapered off to 20psi up the top and spat out a healthy 700rwhp.

We had a slight voltage issue which was dropping ecu volts to around 11.8v so we called it quits and on Tuesday I went down and ran a couple of new power feeds to the ECU and DBW relays. Have yet to test it as we were trying to get things sent into the ECU from the TCU over CAN. We've now got oil temp, programme switch and gear position. Still working on gearbox speed, but have been told what to do so hopefully that will sort it.

Once we've got speed working, we can start setting up the gear shift cuts and do some clutch adaptations in the TCU.

Should have the majority of it setup this week and go over the tune to see how it is now with the new power wire.

Was slack this time, didnt get any full runs as I was watching the TCU data on the laptop.

Been slowly chipping away at the car for the last couple of weeks. Rewired the relays for ecu power, had a slight oil leak from the tarks oil block so ordered a new one and got it on. Worked on the CAN comms to ECU and got speed and torque reduction working. Couldn't get blip to work.

We did a run to test voltage and was all nice and stable now. Managed to get the owner from Lamik to remote in and check what was going on to see why blip wasnt working. I had a 4yr old file in it that didn't have blip back then. Stopped tuning and he upgraded it all to the latest version and set up all the torque parameters. Did a couple of runs and he gave the all good.

Tuneup was a fair bit off with the extra voltage so he went back through and retuned fuel map and gave it a few runs and spat out 736whp.

Pulled it off the dyno and got it ready to drive home yesterday. Decided to go fill it up before the drive. Filled it up with 59L... I didn't know the tank was 65L.

Drive home was nice, shifts are pretty smooth for out of the box with mo adapations. Power on 18s is stupid haha, spins tyres instantly. Very light throttle and shifting up gears feels awesome! Mate followed me back to drop my ute off and drove him back to the shop via the highway. 100km with the windows up and exhaust shut the car is near silent. Get a bit of lifter noise coming through and road noise.

Ordered a new factory key a few weeks ago that arrived this week. Programming instructions were in japanese so I had a fun time trying to translate it all to something that made sense. Tried a few different things that I found on the internet and finally got a decent translation that worked but remote wouldnt link up. Pulled the battery it came with out and checked volts and read 0.2v. Well and truly dead. Found a cr1620 in the random box everyone had above the fridge and it fit in. Went out and tried to programme it again and it worked!

Ordered some new aircon vents and ignition surround to replace my broken ones. Out of the 3 vents i ordered 2 were broken, am yet to send them back for refund/exchange. Will get the good parts installed when I have some time.

Been doing a little bit of driving the last week. Dialling in the gearbox bit by bit. Had to take a few piccies for insurance.

Picked up some new PSR 275/40r18 to test out. Got them fitted up on Friday and popped them on for the drive today.

I got some new Penrite 80w140 progear diff oil as the diff was making a right racket back there, especially in tight low speed stuff. Now I can barely notice it.

Took it for a good drive today with the missus and kids, about a 1hr 20 round trip. The 8hp definitely transforms the car. Nice quick smooth changes in comfort mode and driving at 17-1800rpm on the highway at 100 to sharp snappy shifts when you want to put the boot down. Daughter decided it would be a nice time to have a sleep while we were cruising around 🤣

Did a light hit to the speed limit on the way home. Accidently went first off the lights then shifted 2 3rd and put a little bit down through 4th and end up in 5th.

?awesome work mate, car is looking and sounding great. so you recommend the 8hp swap?

Thanks mate! Yeah 100% its totally transformed the car. Little vid while driving to work. Speedo needs a recal but thats about 100km/h on the way to work. Sits around the 18-1900 rpm mark with 3.69 gear and the 275/40r18s. Driving around normally is a lot better, sit there and accelerate, brake and steer. Or flick it over into manual mode and choose what you want it to do.

Got a little bit of fine tuning to do regarding shift points. Ive set up 3 auto modes each one getting higher rpm shifts.

Went for a spin with my mate on the weekend and managed to hold the throttle flat and pull through 3rd, 4th and a bit of 5th. First time I've seen the shift lights come on 😅

what 8HP did you end up with? and do you mind sharing what its cost to get it going? i'm on borrowed time with my 25t box, and am looking at options, either a speedtek gearset or a 8hp75

It's an 8hp75. Cost me about 11k for box, tcu, shifter, cooler and adapter kit. I did all the wiring myself, no idea how much that cost me. And then obviously AN lines and fittings. Plus tailshaft which was $18-1900 then fluid for box. All up probably looking at around 15k. Not sure what the prices are like these days as I bought it all a couple yrs ago.

Why does everyone film these days in psychopath mode and lose 60% of the screen? :P

And I never realised until now you're in Bris! For some reason I thought Canada, I must have been mixxing this up with another build thread. I'll need to keep my eyes peeled to play spotto now!

    • Diff arrived from Japan last week.  Nismo gt pro 1.5way for gtr. Still deciding whether to use 4.11 or 3.9 gears before installing.  Spent some time yesterday going over what's needed to finish engine bay fuel lines. Got a list so will order soon. Played with radiator placement and decided on stock location with bottom spaced a bit for a small amount of angle. So ordered standard mounts and rubbers. Reason for this is the 180sx was a pain to work on any of the coolers and was also going to take longer to fabricate mounts. Today made a bracket to mount the dbw throttle pedal. Factory location wasn't great to work with the pedal box. Luckily there's a rail that pedal box mounts too so did some measuring, drew up a design and got stuck in.  It's made of 3mm aluminium and has a lot of strength just need some bolts, washers and nuts to finish up.   If I get time tomorrow I'll pull the front bar and lights to start intercooler mounting, it will be flipped under the rad support which will require some trimming.
    • Got my first gold. Deep Forest Lancer Gr.4.
    • Der its not even a 4 door. 🤣
    • Thanks mate yeop be good ! Understand the kid thing for sure lucky mines a bit older and I can bring him over etc he gets treated like a rockstar 😁 go the RB   yeop wont be doing this forever prob so why not 100% everyones always been good but going back this year was different and more interaction and def more support Def thought about changing uprights etc waiting for @Komdotkomto sort out whats needed for those and do the r & d haha  but yeah hard thing for gtst nothing direct fit as all made for GTR which is slightly diff but moving to the r35 gtr bearing will be big improvement - its just budget allocation as its a $10K to $30K exercise dependent on how mild or wild you go and seems something always comes up - ontop of the crazy travel / racing
    • Great write up. Always good to record everything to look back in the future and reminisce. How good is the motorsport community with helping out when needed.  Should be pretty proud of the result you achieved for the little amount of laps you've done there. Also good you have the drive to do better too ,I'm sure a 1.29 will happen next year.  You thought about a front end upgrade? New upright and arms with better geometry also allow a better bearing your not replacing every time.
