R33 GTST,

Blown motor due to blocked oil galeries (2 out of 3).

Exhaust, and pod filter chopped springs, only mods at the time.

Was aparently cause due to excessive driving and cooking the oil (which was not clean) and somehow blocking up these galaries.

hey cuz'z

Doing 220 in ma car .. i was watching milo and otis on dvd and driving ma kar when i didnt realise i changed from fifth to first and every piston went through da bonnet and i was like shit m8..and then i pulled over and used bush mechanics on ma car and used twigs and rocks to recreate ma engine, and used a 5" digeredoo as ma zorst .. car hauled cuz.. troo story :flamed:

Back again

Car Same as before

Reason for almost making me cry, most likely cracked piston, really bad knock, no real evidence as to y yet, ill start pulling the motor out on the weekend. I think when i sell both the 33's im gonna stray away from skylines, they seem to be nothing but bad luck for me.

Ok, not an actual failure- more of a question about something my uncle noticed the other day. I'm missing both end mounting studs off the exhaust manifold: both sheared off (can still see threaded ends in bolt holes in head). He said he had an RB30 non turbo VL that had exactly the same thing. Drove it for another 100 000kms with no apparent problems. Mine shows no evidence of exhaust leaks and performs fine, just wondering if any other RB owners had noticed this (might not be the best place to post this, but this seems to be the greatest concentration of people doing destruct testing... :D ).

R32 GTS-t RB20DET 3" cat back (yup, that's all 4 now).

I wouln't worry about that too much man.

My old motor had the last one sheared off just like yours and it lasted a good 60000 from when I noticed it.

Can be from too much heat in the manifold or most like just one of those things that happen.

RB30 Vl's and R31's are renowned for doing this.

that exact same thing happend to me. expect I was watching Disneys Alladin, and I had to use a 4inch didgeridoo cause in sydney they don't have the 5 inch ones.

Engine/Car:

RB26DETT in an R32 GTR (89, showing 40,000 exact amount unknown)

Type of failure:

Front turbo exhaust wheel snapped off and turned into dust.

Factors influencing the failure:

Still not sure the car is 100% stock and never been boosted..

State of tune of the engine:

As above

Suspension and tyres:

Stock

Oil used and service interval:

Motul 4100 turbo light 1000km's after first oil change since importing

General comments:

Was on boost at the time when i (didnt realise at the time but) lost all boost. There was no loud noises or any noticable smoke which was strange and i only noticed what appeared to be black (over fueling) smoke when i tried to boost after it happened. After testing out areas such as wastegate actuation and re-circulation valves for leaks i finally booked it in to get diagosed and was left with this. As i noted the exhaust wheel was turned to dust from still driving the car briefly not think it was too serious. One thing to add was that there was no dust sucked into the engine. Engine itself is fine.

No worries, time for N1's then!

Well, this is long overdue.....

Engine/Car:

RB26DETT in an R32 GTR (91, about 120,000klm)

Type of failure:

Broken.  Really broken.

Factors influencing the failure:

Let the wife drive it (man is she going to kill me for this)

State of tune of the engine:

Dead stock

Suspension and tyres:

Stock and rock hard jap spec

Oil used and service interval:

Brand new oil, not sure of brand or grade.

General comments:

1,2 and 6 bores badly scored, same with the pistons.  Also had a bent rod on 6 which can't have helped.

The death happened on a very hot day and oil temp went over 120 on ths stock guage, so possibly it was a way too hot oil related failure, with some detination to help out.  Interestingly the key that drives the oil pump was VERY badly worn so maybe it wasnt pumping too hard anyway.

Of course the fact that we were racing it may not have helped, but hey a slapping piston is no reason to hold back on the track, right?

Interestingly the supposedly never opened engine had perm marker characters inside the sump and a balanced crank....hmm...

On the other hand, it was nice to see tearing it down wasn't so hard, we pulled apart 2 in 4 hours.  I wonder if putting it back together will be so easy?

Well an update on that....I didn't check the crank carefully enough when it came out, looks like the original problem was a spun bearing :)

And the reassembly didn't go so well....5 pistons were piss easy, #3 got jammed and scored the bore on the way in.

Taking it all apart again tommorrow and sending the block off for a new sleeve on #3 :D

So who's fine effort was this? make sure they only use a 4 pound hammer to get the slugs to slide in this time :)

Good luck and thanks for the update mate.

lol I paid peanuts and got monkeys! It was indeed only a 4 pound mallet but that is apparently enough, rings are pretty sharp things.

actually not really sure why this happened, every other piston went in fine, this one caused trouble *every* single time we tried to do it. they are the same pistons that came out and it has only had a hone. wierd.

anyway, I'm having the bottom end shop put #3 in for me this time :/

disassembled it again tonight, it is off for the sleeving tomorrow.

Have just read this thread, thought I would add my bit:

Problem: Turbo failed

Mods: T04 high flow turbo, hybrid 'cooler, pod, boost controller, safcII, 3" cat back exhaust

Service history: Always serviced by dealership where car was bought

(import specialist)

Reason: Husband borrowed 'line to go to ulladulla. First time on high boost (13.7psi@252kw@rear), overtakes, and hears a very loud metallic clunking sound. Dealership organises for her to be towed back to canberra (wouldnt have made it back up the clyde). Long story short, turbo failed due to being overboosted@21 psi.

I never moved the boost controller (non-electric) and neither did my husband. The b/c is right in front of the gear stick and stu holds it quite low, so will never know if he knocked it while changing gears.

The turbo was replaced by another (not a T04) and she has never run better. We thought it might have been that the T04 was faulty 'cos there were a few failures until a company took over the importing and supposedly fixed the inherant problems. The turbo was sent to them for testing and they said that the turbo was not faulty, it failed simply from being overboosted.

End result is that we have very reluctantly agreed to pay half of the new turbo ($1300). The labour and towing are not included in this cost, and they offered us this deal as we have spent a lot of money getting stuff done. however, she is running really well, albeit on much less power (either 234 or 242 kw@rear on high boost).

Apologies for the long post.

End result is that we have very reluctantly agreed to pay half of the new turbo ($1300).

Why very reluctantly? If I blew my turbo up and got offered a replacement at half price, I would be over the moon. Is there something I missed here?

Might as well add my 2 cents.

Car - Series 1 R32 GTST

Mods at the time - Hybrid Hyflow Turbo, Turbo back Zorst with wastegate bypass, Big front mount, Bosch fuel pump, Malpassi Reg.

Problem - 3 inch heater hose under inlet manifold blew while driving on highway. Dumped all water content from engine in a matter of seconds. As I was doing 100 the air cooled the engine so the temp guage read normal until all water had exited. Then temp guage read normal as it does when no water is in engine. Drove for about another 15 km until she konked out. Pulled over. Waited on sode of road for half an hour. Found out my own brother wouldn't even come and help me out so I started her up again and drove for another 10 km until she konked out. Waited another half hour for her to cool down then started her up again to get to the top of the hill at the servo where I had some more light. Managed to get some heater hose from a friend who drove out to save me and I fixed it. Filled her up with water and away she went.

Drove her around for another week or so but she kept boiling over when I would turn her off. I knew the head gasket was blown already so I pulled her apart.

Everything was still perfect. No shrunk pistons. No cracks. No bends. Nothing.

Decided to go with Ross forged pistons anyway. Had the engine balanced and blueprinted. Rebuilt engine in my spare time. Got her running again. Did 2500 km and she blew all main bearings. Found that it had a hung cradle and was sporting a fantastic 55 thou bend in the centre. I cracked the crank in 4 places and bend the crank 8 thou in the centre and 5 thou on the snout.

Must fill in a small blank - while doing the 2500 km from the first build I blew the turbo as the gunky boiled oil had been sitting on the bearings for so long that it just chewed them out. Had the turbo rebuilt. Cost me $900 as it had completely stuffed the centre peice.

Found that the oil pump was also shagged as the main bearings had gone through it.

Picked up a complete N/A Auto bottom end for $200. Had the crank crack tested and polished and balanced. Oil pump was perfect so I used that one too.

Bought a whole new set of bearings and had the cradle straightened and shot peened.

I'm up to 800 km now on the second rebuild. This time it is perfect.

Why very reluctantly? If I blew my turbo up and got offered a replacement at half price, I would be over the moon. Is there something I missed here?

Ffair call, every cloud has a silver lining, and the new turbo sounds even better than the last.....so I must sound like a sulking gal hey?? hehehehe

Cheers JimX, feel whole lot better now!

    • Hey was wondering if you ended up installing the R33 GTR speed sensor - I found one too and wanted to confirm it's a direct swap into the R34 6 speed?
    • After 23 years of owning a Skyline, finally had the latch go.  Followed this guide,  works like a dream again. Great Guide 👍
    • Hi all,   I’ve got the biggest lot of problems with my R33 GTS-T   It was a freshly rebuilt 25th anniversary RB25DET (plastic cas, neo cams) probably 6 years ago now   The engine was running so well but I fkd up badly and trusted someone I’d known for 10 years that was well known around Plazmaman for his welding and fab work. I added a lovely photo of some of his previous work. Not sure why my car was worked on by whoever did this shit     I’m normally someone who would never open myself up to something like this, I still can’t believe I did it. Trusting him literally fkd it all up for me. Everything has been a struggle, like it’s almost been 6 years that’s how much I’ve just on and off been trying to work it all out.    All I wanted was a car that danced down low, like full boost from around 3~3500rpm to redline, don’t really care what power it puts down (if it ever does) but I just wanted it to be quick to get on it.    He recommended the turbo to get, I picked Hypergear but he told me to get the front 4” with a T4 and 0.68 rear housing.    I was expecting all these beautiful welds, tidy fab work and paid for it to be ready to go to a tuner when I got it back.    I got a car back that was an absolute mess, I actually couldn’t believe it was my car anymore. I don’t think you could even call what he did welds, they’re disgusting.    So I stripped everything he touched off it and with every bolt I loosened it just got worse and worse.    I covered it and literally built and finished another car in the meantime but now it’s getting to the point where I really want my Skyline back.   Its a struggle because I paid him to do all this shit because I didn’t know how to and now I’ve had to try and figure it all out omg    Please excuse the bird shit horrible welds, I’ve got my show pony car and am so beyond dealing with this car I don’t even really care at this point.    If someone told me about what he did to my car I wouldn’t have believed them but it happened to me. It was unbelievable. He went missing, my car went missing, it came back missing parts, the straight af chassis rails bore the scars of being dragged up a trailer backwards, even the sandwich plate was bent. Everything was leaking and open to whatever fell into it, rounded off/ missing bolts, power steering oil and coolant everywhere, no gaskets, parts stolen off it, even managed to damage the sump pan.   Promised me he’d finish the car, knew what it meant to me, I paid him thousands and thousands just for him to trash it. He told me he was fully licensed and insured, come to find out he’d cancelled his ABN, so obviously no insurance. I had laid up insurance on the car and would’ve been covered but I was scared they would’ve written it off or because the business was no longer trading I’d still be liable.    He was supposed to:  New fully custom mild steam pipe exhaust manifold with turbo location moved from factory position to high forward mount. (I don’t know if it is a mild steam pipe, I’ve got a funny feeling the waste gate isn’t in a very good position and I don’t think the outlets off each cylinder are equal) 4” custom stainless steel dump with external gate (he re-plumbed it) Cut and shut OEM intake manifold with throttle reposition (I ended up doing the throttle reposition) Box in pod filter (left out) New 100cel catalytic converter (pretty sure it’s there but unsure if it’s 100cel) Front mount intercooler piping fabricated to suit (all smashed up and rusty holes where he was supposed to make it look standard where fmic piping passes through. I don’t even think my front bar is going to fit 🙄) Custom 5” intake pipe from pod to turbo (didn’t come with it so had to do something to make it work with the Z32 afm)   Engine: Full cylinder head service & machining  Brand new valves Precision upgraded spring kit Engine block honed New bearings  New piston rings  New ARP conrod bolt kit New ARP head studs Cometic head gasket VRS kit   ATR43SS2 ball bearing turbo 0.68 rear housing  Turbosmart 45mm external wastegate (got delivered to the fab bloke, I’ve got no idea what spring is in it, I’m assuming the one that came pre installed) Walbro 260 fuel pump  Nismo 740cc injectors (tested to 880) Spitfire coil packs GCG FMIC RB25DET manual 5 speed 4:11 rear diff   I’ve got an Apexi Power FC in it atm, I was hoping to just get it to operating temp to make sure everything was okay before towing to a tuner but it’s over-fuelling too much. I don’t think that’s going to happen so i think I’m going to get either a Link G4 or Haltech for it. What do you guys recommend? I can’t work out the power FC so just gonna give up on that one     It’s got an exhaust leak coming from somewhere I can’t see 🙄    The fuel pressure was steady but now it like drops from 40 to 20psi randomly (noticed this yesterday)    I’ll attach pics of the shit he put on my car and the engine bay now as it sits    I really just need some help, I need a tuner in Sydney I can trust, I’d like to be with the car while it’s being tuned if possible, I know it looks terrible but unfortunately I’ve just got to put up with it for now and fix the cosmetic stuff later   Do you guys think the manifolds are going to be okay? Or do I throw the exhaust manifold and try again?   I don’t even think these combinations are going to work tbh   I know everything I fitted was rated to be able to take at least 400kW but most rated higher    If you’ve gotten this far I really really appreciate it 🙏 I don’t mind if you trash me or the car, I made a rookie error and f**k I’ve paid for it. As you’ll see 🙄
    • From everything I’ve heard you’ll be waiting a long time for  the parts to arrive
    • Have you looked at the workshop manual?
