Well, i got myself new wheels yesterday care of Tempe Tyres. 18" x 8.0 rims, with 225/40/18 tyres. I amde sure it was the right offset, they had to check it up on their system as they'd never had a Stagea come in before. took a few pictures while i was at home that afternoon on the Mount. tell me what you think

Hi guys

Quick question I am hoping someone can answer for me quickly coz I have to finalise today if I am going to buy a set of rims. Got a good price on a set of 350Z 18x8s... however the front tyres are 225/45 and the rears are 245/45.... WHAT EXACTLY will happen to the car if I run these differing profile tyres on the 4WD Stagea for 8 months or so til they need changing????????????????

If the rolling diameter between the front tyres and the rear tyres are different then the speed at which fronts turn compared to the rears will make the ATESSA 4WD system think that the fronts or rears are loosing traction (due to the speed difference). So it will try and fix this by trasferring torque between the fronts and rears.

Eventually the clutch packs in the transfer case may burn out and need to be replaced, which costs a fair bit :rant:

If the rims fit on the Stagea with no problems, then maybe you can rip the tyres off the rims and sell them seperately ? Then save up and get the same size all round ?

Are the 350Z rims the same size all round ?

Aaargh this is so confusing... I phoned two of the well known tuning places in Perth and both said that this small difference in profile wouldnt have any impact at all - "not a problem - do it all the time with Atessa system - it is built to deal with small variables - just not huge ones like different rim sizes front and rear" ... dam confusing!!!

But yeah in answer to your question - 350Z rims 18x8s all round if you get the "Touring" spec - "Track" version of 350Z had 18x9s on the rear. But yeah the bum is they all came standard with diff tyre profiles front and rear. Anyway - they look quite nice - I saw this yellow one same as mine with them fitted - so will look exactly like this...

I have found a set with good tread left for $1400... but am spewing coz a friend of a mate sold his stock 350Z rims 2 months ago with brand new with tyres for $400 all 4 !!!

One thing to remember about tyre sizes and ATESSA, and that you just need to get the rolling diameter the same. You can have different sizes front and rear, but as long as the rolling diameter is the same.

But saying that, you may upset the handling etc..

Yeah Sydneykid - looks like the way itll work out if i get that set... they are Potenzas so should be able to get a little bit for them with 60% tread left - and then get a pair of Nixens or whatever in their place...

OK final opinions please - down to 2 options for second hand rims for my YELLOW series 2 Stagea

Option 1

$1750 all up for 350Z 18x8 stock silver rims, 2 x 60% Potenzas and two new tyres (less whatever I can get for the two Potenzas I offload)

Option 2

$1750 all up for AVS Model 6 WHITE 5-spokes ($1050 only done 2000kms since new no scratches) + 4 x Nixen tyres $700

So yeah with pictures the choice is...

Opinions appreciated - I am either way on this... I know some people dont like white - I usually dont except on bright yellow cars for some reason... but yeah - I'll put it to a vote - which option would you choose!!!??? :rant:

hi guys just a quick question about the size of rims whats the law say about how big and how wide you can go on a car before its not legal? Is there a way to get it certified by an engineer? I ask this as you see more and more pimped up 4wds with massive rims on them getting around and i was sure you could only go up 2 inches is this true?

I actually dug up this old thread to post some frustrating new info I found ou - and coincidently it is also exactly related to your last posted question that no-one ever replied to!

Just confirmed with DPI here in Perth about approved rim sizes and got an aweful shock which means my current 18x8s are defective.

Dunno about in other states, but in WA this is the technical speil that if it got down to it they could defect you on:

Alternative road wheels are permitted under the following conditions :  

a. Rim width must not exceed the maximum rim width specified by the manufacturer by more than 25mm (1") (for passenger vehicles manufactured after 1st January 1973, the manufacturers rim width shall be taken as that specified on the tyre placard).  

In any event, rim width shall not exceed 177.8 mm (7") unless specified by the manufacturer as standard equipment for the vehicle in question. No increase in rim width is permitted for vehicles fitted with original equipment rims in excess of 177.8 mm (7") width.  

b. The wheel is contained completely within the body work of the vehicle which includes acceptable flares.  

c. The wheel does not foul any part of the body or suspension under all conditions of travel  

d. The vehicle handling is not impaired in any way.  

e. The tyre to rim fitment must be in accordance with the Tyre and Rim Association Manual.  

f. Rim diameters must be the same as specified by the manufacturer.  

g. The wheel must be one designed for use with the vehicle with respect to bolt pitch circle and wheel nut tapers  

h. The track must not be increased by more than 25mm (1") over the maximum specified by the manufacturer.etc.

i. All wheels must be the same size, profile and bolt pattern.  

j. Vehicles required to comply with Australian Design Rule 24, "Tyre & Rim Selection" must continue to comply with this Design Rule (contact the Department of Transport and Regional Services for more details).  

k. The fitment of so called "plus one" and "plus two" and tyres is acceptable providing :  

- the overall diameter of the large rims fitted with the lower profile tyres do not exceed the overall diameter  

-all tyres and rims fitted to the vehicle are of the same size and profile  

-with the exemption of item (f), the tyres and rims are in conformity with the requirements specified above in items (a) to (j).

l. Reducing the wheel track less than the original manufacturers specification is not permitted, as this may reduce vehicle stability.

So...

Stagea stock max width as per tyre placard is 7JJ... 7 inches... which mean NOTHING wider than 7" can legally be fitted.

The ridiculous thing is point "k"... you can go up "plus two" sizes (max 18" as per stagea stock max of 16") - but you still have to adhere to points a->j (excluding f) which mean they only approve 18 x 7 rims... joke - anyone know a rim thats made to 18x7 ???? They are mostly min 8" for 18s - and Ive found a few 18x17.5, but no 18x7s so far.

The theres the "all tyres and rims fitted to the vehicle are of the same size and profile "... so not allowed to have different width rims front and rear, or different width tyres front and rear... so no wider tyres on the back allowed!

What a load of crap... phoned Bob Jane and enquired - along the lines "yeah the govt has no idea - allowing to go up two sizes to 18" but no wider than 7" - go figure. We basically say unless you buy a rim with the width stamped on the outside - how can they tell because visually on inspection they only see the TYRE width - not the rim width"

So their advice was to not fit tyres to 18s wider than allowed on 7" rims by the ADR rules. Now just gotta find out what that widest width would be??

i have 18x8 chrome scorches on my wagon with 235/40 all round,fit perfect,j spec had a stag a while back with a set of 20's on a s1?? has anyone come to a conclusion on the biggest fitment..? as iwould love a set of 19's-20's...so many wheel threads but cant seem to find an exact answer.cheers.i have a s1 btw if it is different to s2
