Help id this turbo

Hey guys

Probably been asked a few times but everything i find/get told is different to each other..

So i'm trying to find out what turbo is on my rb25det. In r32 skyline

When I purchased i was told it was 'highflowed'

Later discovered the car was running a nistune i got my curious and started pulling apart intake pipes, manifolds etc to find out whats been done.

Ok so ive been told its a 28/71...

But want more info/confirmation

Or someone i can take it to in Melbourne that could help

Cast in Front on turbo compressor:

GARRETT M24

Cast on turbo housing at the back:

HKS 064

On the center tag:

Top: GARRETT JAPAN

Ki 0216J

Bottom numbers:

446179-5032

According to Google that chra part no is a Garrett gt2871r. So it is the hks version of that turbo. I believe it's known as the Hks gtrs.

What psi would be safe on this turbo?

18-21psi It should be super responsive although a bit on the small side for a rb25. Should make 240rwkw give or take a bit on 98.

Lol I turned it up to 15 and got scared id blow it up and so i turned it down

If it's not tuned and you turn it up it'll probably blow the engine up

With the controller wound fully out it is 14

Unfortunately i have no idea man..

I brought the car as stock rb25 with a highflowed turbo

Then discovered the Nistune and now turbo

If i put a stock ecu in, it throws a nock sensor code and idles extremely rough and rich

Nistune only runs 1 knock sensor and it idles and and drives very smoothly and it doesnt smell like it runs rich, yet to calculate fuel consumption

Will be getting it to a nistune tuner as soon as everything else is sorted

Probably an RB20 ECU that runs with the nistune and apparently most nistuned RB20 runs entirely on the knock map so the tuner copy the main fuel and ignition maps into the knock map and it runs normally. Mine is setup like that, it constantly runs on the knock map with or without the knock sensors plugged in, even with the 1M resistor shunt to ground to replace the knock sensor. The ECU doesn't throw any code but still runs only on the knock map.

What is your ECU reference ?

According to my notes 446179-0032 is a 56 compressor trim GT2871R cartridge .

From memory what you have on the cold side is an early HKS type machined inlet shroud which they used on the RB six cylinder versions of their 2530Rs 2535Rs and 2540Rs . The GTRSs had a unique port shrouded compressor housing on the RB versions and the four cylinder versions had a Nissan/Garrett style compressor housing . The RB version used a 52 compressor trim version of the 2871R . I think the 2530 cartridge number was 446179-0021 , the 2535 446179-0019 , and the 2540 446179-0018 . I think the GTRS cartridge is 446179-0067 .

To me it looks like someone had a HKS spec turbo and hi flowed it with a Garrett marketed 2871 56T cartridge .

Its seems very good when driving and throw it back a gear etc
