So what I've read so far in this thread: "Built not bought, but I can sell it to you for $4k". Whut?

Fatz put Porsche brakes on his R33 a couple of years ago. He was running AP Racing after that as an upgrade.

It's good you're DIY-ing it, but I'd put it past GTSBoy before driving it :P

I dont rate the EVO upgrade kit . This would appear far better suited to std Nissan master cylinders and pedal leverage ratios.  I personally would never run the EVO kits , even if i had ABS. These look a nicer solution

Curious to know what caliper you found for the rears. I have never been able to find a nice Porsche  4 pot rear, even going old school 928/944

This looks on track for being  a decent enough upgrade. Price is up for individuals to weigh up...but on paper it seems a better upgrade than the EVO calipers which based on piston size makes them a huge leap from std and how proven aftermarket kits from AP, Alcon, Bremo, Stoptech go about their kitd.  But folk seem to give positive feedback so?!?!

 

If you are drilling rotors etc may be worth looking at Mercedes ML 343mm rotors

how would an evo caliper be an upgrade?
forget the 4k figure, after almost finished fitting the rear porchu 4piston calipers it's not something i want to do again

as for the rear, i used the the 4 piston calipers that come standard on all cayenne's

One benefit of going with the Evo Brembos is that there's a wide choice of pads available from nearly everywhere.

In truth there's probably little practical gain by doing a caliper change for the vast majority of R32-4 owners on this forum.  Quality pads, fluids, braided lines (maybe), and some air guides would probably do the trick.  Unless people are doing track work with 20+ minute sessions and things are getting mighty hot, needing the extra heat sink benefit of big rotors.

Gotta say I like looking at the progress on a job like this, but the pics and details are a bit scant especially how the job's being done.  I wonder if there's been any sums done to determine what front/rear bias these Porsche calipers will give?

Relying on ABS to counteract a poor front/rear bias isn't what I would like to see.  But there's a strong argument (for me) that this upgrade should be matched with a pedal box and adjustable bias.  Not a cheap or quick undertaking to get right.

Don't tease with a few workshop mock ups without the money shot, unless patent pending. ;)

Get everything fitted to the car, run it and report back with the results of your efforts.

What are the stumpy cylinders at the top and bottom? Are they attached to the pad's backing plates?

    • Those 2 solenoids in that assembly I mention, are the PWM solenoids for torque converter lock-up clutch & EPC (line pressure control) ~ when most folks hear of 'solenoid failure', the tendency is to think electrical failure...but fact of the matter is, especially wrt the EPC solenoid (which is moving/running all the time), you can have an electrically 'good' solenoid, that's absolutely broken/worn out mechanically inside...ie; valve plunger return spring rubbing against spring retainer plate, lowering preload pressure.. ...and the solenoid armature extension limit spring wafer with bad wear/broken off petals... ...and if there's ever been any metal flying about, damage to the valve plunger end itself... ...the stuff one never really sees, unless you go the whole 10yards trying to answer the question "why is my line pressure screwy, but TCU isn't flagging any EPC solenoid fault?"...and carefully dissect the solenoid. Worst (and most probable) scenario is when the plate spring petals break off, they get held by the magnetic flux, get mashed up by the armature into little bits, which end up in the space between the armature & shading core bore, and things get stuck or randomly jam up, and your line pressure goes flat and doesn't change...and the TCU never sees it, as it doesn't actively monitor LP... ..then it gets into insidious land, if you end up with lower than expected line pressure...lets say high clutch..and the lower pressure causes it to slip ~ when I say 'slip', think say 2000rpm on the drive plates, and 1800rpm on the driven plates, because the slip is making them under-rotate by 200rpm ; you get all the usual nasties like heat and band/clutch wear, but even if it's only 20rpm slip the same thing happens...and... you'll hardly ever pick this up driving the thing with the torque converter active as it effectively masks these sorts of slippages that are line pressure related ...(the newer TCUs can detect clutch slip rate)...just  FYI as it were...  
    • There's nothing that some paddle pop sticks and extra cable ties can't fix.
