COOLANT LEAKING R34 GTT

So I realise this when my oil temperature went up half way about 110 degrees on a normal drive, came home after half an hour of driving and turned off the engine and check the engine and it was literally boiling you can hear it!! Next morning I went to check the coolant in the radiator and it was GONE, I thought I blew the head gasket!! I poured about 4 litres off coolant and it was back to normal but then I realise there's coolant leaking where my water pump is, I'm not certain it's the water pump but it's all around that area, and it drips down to where my oil sump is what do you guys think and it's not little drips, I turn the car on and it drips a nice puddle in less than a minute :0 I checked my oil and there's no milky or any smoke from exhaust, just a leak, could be thermos housing but the leaks looks more above it

thing is my mechanic replaced the water pump, and whole timing kit and also my 3 belt just 1 month ago. So it's still new !

Heres some pictures

From the looks of it, the Water pump looks good still, touched it and felt no wetness. I'm thinking i must've destroyed my Head gasket and its leaking from there :S

Which im hoping thats not the Case !

P.s When i got the car back from mechanics which was exactly 3 weeks ago, the car was fine no leaks nothing.

Then just 2 days ago on the way home from going out, My Oil gauge in the center console went to the middle which is not normal for me. and the ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON :O !

Then next thing you know, I got no coolant in the Radiator and no coolant in the Reservoir Bottle. And knowing i drove it without any WATER OR COOLANT whatsoever

I must've busted the whole leak Bigger cause now when i start the engine not even for a minute you can see the coolant leaking from somewhere at the engine zz

I should never have got this car :( Had way too many problems one after another due to previous owner not taking care of it.

Major service i have done before this Leak happen: (Just 3 weeks ago so everything is still new)

Timing Belt Kit (Idler Puller & Tension)
Replace 3 V-Belts (Alternator, AirCon, PowerSteering)
New Water Pump with gasket Replaced !
Valve Cover Gasket ( Rocket Cover )
Thermostat Replaced

This was all done professionally at a Mechanic who specialists In SKYLINE AND MANY JAP SPORT CARS
so no dodgy job here.

It is almost certainly a problem with the water pump install, so take it back and get them to look at it.

Other possibilities for loosing all water are a split hose somewhere (which may have been disturbed during the timing belt change, but that's not really their fault). It won't be a head gasket leak, they won't happen externally (ie they will either leak into the cylinder then exhaust, or into the oil).

If your mechanic is within a couple of minutes of home just drive it there, the engine will take at least 5 min to get hot without coolant. Keep an eye on the oil temp and stop driving if it gets to normal temp. Otherwise give the mechanic a call and ask them how to get it back to them, since it is likely to be their error.

Before you do this, just check your radiator top and bottom hoses are connected, and hose clamps are tight.  Also check your hoses for leaks and splits.  Also just check that its not your radiator leaking somewhere as well.  Even removing the stone tray and seeing where the leak comes from?  I agree that the likely culprit is the water pump, but a quick check of the simple things might be a smart move before 'firing from the hip'.

So I took it back to the mechanic and it is the Water Pump, the weep hole was where it was leaking from ! It only got changed 1000kms ago so here's the deal guys, DO NOT BUY REPCO WATER PUMP FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE CARS, it will bust on you ! So need to replace the water pump since it's gone now ! Getting a genuine one from Nissan to be safe!

That's actually quite interesting to hear. Glad your had your problem sorted.

It was a rb25det engine, r34 GTT, I only went a little hard a few times after I got it majorly Service (haven't even RED line it yet, how sad) and after a week of driving, next thing you know there was no coolant left and the car over heated bad. I was like wtf seriously !?

Nissan water pumps are cheap enough, $150-$200 is nothing when it should last for 100,000km (ish)

I'm fairly sure I've heard of bad reports of repco water pumps before, not that it helps you now but good lesson for others

I purchase the water pump so all goods they can pay me back including labour cause yeah not my fault it was faulty after less than 2 weeks of it getting replaced :)

So are repco covering all your costs? Or is that yet to be seen?

Out of interest, was it an RB25 one or an RB30 one?

No, I meant the water pump itself, they are slightly different and REPCO and others often carry the one for the RB30, but rarely stock the proper one for the RB25.

  • 1 month later...

It's funny cause before I change the water pump the check engine light came on, I'm assuming it's the coolant temperature sensor Acting up when I had no coolant. Now the car is running on a Limp mode how sad. Too many problems with this R34 >.>

    • Hey lads, reviving an old thread.  As an update, since the last time replied to this thread, ive done mostly suspension. Havent touched the motor except for maintenance. Though upon changing spark plugs, found out i had splitfires pre-installed! Updates: - Got me some stock airbox top cover and snorkel to fit onto the original intake. Should be free of defects - Bought a set of R34 GT-T brakes (not installed yet, going to rebuild + respray in champion blue + white 'Nissan' text) - Bought the last set of bilsteins from @Sydneykid and had them installed. Has been making some sounds on the rear but hopefully should be sorted out after this New Year break. - Regreased front caster rod bushings (poly bushes..) - Rear upper camber arms - Whiteline sway bars (BNF27Z 22mm + BNR11XXZ 24mm).  The rear sway bars are a bit short (ive read 50mm else where) but was still able to get them in.  Anyhows, I reckon suspension is sorted now. Maybe replace bushes (do have a set of front upper control arms from SK not installed yet) but should be okay for now. From now, I'm wanting to start working on the motor, drivetrain etc etc. Still debating on the order to go on and what to buy etc but: - ECU ( Haltech or Link ( Link states that it dont support A/T or AWD functions... Can anyone attest to this? ) - Highflow turbo ( ATR43ss2 ) - Intercooler ( Not decided yet, but cant find many good afoordable ones. Toshi says to opt for crossflow Japanese. Bit difficult this one, unless I get a returnflow Blitz from JJ? ) - Injectors ( Any recommendations ? I do have a nismo FPR ( Thanks SK ) ) - Seats - Tune by either Toshi or DVS To be fair, I did consider just keeping the stock turbo and nistuning it. Sat in a mates stock N, that had something like 200kw, and I reckon that felt more than enough. Maybe I should just go this route ahhaha. Too many choices.... Planning a trip down south, so wanting to just clean things up and make sure it gets to and from in one piece. Anything else specifically I should do before ? Cheers lads
    • Must be for the car’s lucky charm 🤷🏽‍♂️ She runs fine, but it just seems to take about 1L less. Maybe I’ll have the oil sump dropped at some point to check if there is anything
    • Hmmm interesting. Mine is the exact same and clearly the right one.  The mystery of the engine oil being full after 3.5-4L continues
    • Yes I as well would like to find out where I could get some of the seat material with the red or blue small squares in it
