Getting a tune, Need advice on parts

Hey Guys and Girls,

I will be getting a tune on my R34 GTT in the not so distant future. just looking to get some advice on some parts and if they need changing.

The car will be running the stock turbo so i know I'm limited to 12psi and around the 200kw mark.

what i am trying to figure out is at that power level will i need the follow.

FMIC ?? or will the standard side mount be enough to handle it ??

Injectors.. will the standard ones (330cc or 370cc cant seem to find a 100% answer on what size they are.) be enough for the tune ??

Fuel Pump .. standard one good enough or need a upgraded one ?

One day it will get getting a bigger turbo, for which i know i need to upgrade the above parts but that wont be happening for a couple years. so i don't want to buy upgrades yet if i can get away with using the standard ones.

Cheers in advanced :)

If you don't want to spend money just now no need to change anything if you are not changing the turbo.  If you have a FMIC and/or bigger exhaust on hand by all means fit them. What are you using for a tunable ECU? Do not expect earth shattering performance.

If the fuel pump is the original stocker then there is no way to be confident that it will hold up.  You should budget to replace it as insurance.

The stock injectors (370cc) are absolutely fine for the stock turbo at 12 psi.....subject to the fuel pump not going soft at high demand.

The SMIC will be OK for the power level you are aiming for, BUT you will get a little more power from a bigger FMIC simply from decreased pressure drop and improved cooling.  Will be able to run a tiny bit more timing before it pings, etc etc.

The Exhaust is 3" turbo back with hi flow cat, will be using a nistune for it. need to keep the consult cable for a little project im working on. yeah i'm not excepting earth shattering omg its so much faster performance. i know the stock turbo will only get me so far.

New fuel pump is pretty easy, would i need to do the re-wire on it to make it run at higher voltage ?

and if that is the case with FMIC il get one before i get it tuned.

Depends on the pump but you may as well do it when you install it as the cost is small - its mostly your time.

You might not like my advice but here is my 2c.

From what I've read, I'm assuming you have a stock car with the only mods so far being a full exhaust. Also you state that in the future you will fit a bigger turbo.

Based on this, I don't think it makes sense to tune the car at this stage. If the nistune is in the car currently, I'm assuming it already has some form of tune and can be driven as is.

To avoid paying for 2 tunes, I would leave the car as is, and just save up for the following mods to be done all at once. Turbo, injectors, fuel pump, front mount and tune. (depending on the intended use of the car, I'd also fit an oil cooler and power steering cooler at the same time)

I've modified a fully stock R34 as one of my projects. With list below I've managed 317rwkws on P98 fuel, I hope those information can provide some guidance for starters.

1. Xtreme Pull type Cushion button heavy duty clutch KNI25003-1C. from Race brakes : $891

2. Splitfire coil packs from Just Jap: $589

3. JJR's stainless steel R34 3inches turbo back exhaust system: $770

4. XSpurt 1000cc top feed injectors from Injectorsonline.com: $750

5: Walbro 470 L/H fuel pump from Injectorsonline.com: $200

6: Adaptronic R34 Plug in ecu: $1499

7: Havoc Fabrication Front mount cooler kit: $850

8: 4 inches metal induction pipe made by few silicon hoses and a pod: $100

9: Complete dyno tuning from Chequered Tuning $750

10: I will be using my own ATR43G4SAT internally gated bolt on Turbocharger. $1250.

Total spending: $7649 Plus about $500 in labor it works out to be $8150.

More then happy to hear any opinion :)

The car is Stock besides the following

* turbo back 3" exhuast

* GFB EBC

There isnt a nistune in the car already it is running the stock ecu with a stock tune.

i know i wont get crazy results from the tune keeping the stock equipment, but it will still be an increase even if it is a small one. i wont be getting a new turbo for a couple years, so i dont mind paying for 2 tunes.

Cheers for the information :) it does give me a good idea for getting more power in the future.

    • Much less twat-tastic. CF wheels are too garish for civilised use.
    • From there, as the manual says....assembly is the reverse of disassembly, no tricks worth mentioning Much better (for me)
    • In my case, the standard wheel I had was in good condition but the buttons had more wear, so I swapped them across from the original wheel from the car. The plastic rear cover is held on by 4 tabs, and once the wiring is removed you can get access to 2 screws on each side the hold the buttons in From there I just swapped the wiring over. What was interesting is the standard style wheel is 2.0kg but the carbon fibre one is 50% heavier at 2.9kg. It even has a weight inside the wheel at the top to make up for some sort of imbalance in the design. weird
    • Once the airbag is off, to remove the steering wheel.... Undo the 2 plugs into the clock spring, and the horn connector from it's clip. Hit the 19mm nut with a rattle gun (preferably) or if you don't' have one, you probably want an assistant to hold the wheel in place while you use a breaker bar to undo the nut Then, screw the nut back on 3 turns, and pull the wheel sharply towards you. If that doesn't work hit it medium force with a rubber mallet on either side, or possible behind if you can get there. If that all fails (it shouldn't!) you might need a steering wheel puller
    • So, to next task....the carbon fibre steering wheel was either an expensive factory option or a chinesium special. Either way, I don't like either the flat bottom or thick ring style, so it had to go So...to remove the steering wheel.... First, disconnect battery negative and stomp on the brake pedal for a few seconds. Then, remove the small circular covers on each side of the wheel's rear surround to uncover the airbag clips. You need to push something like a flat bladed screw driver through, to push the steel clip inwards and pull the side of the airbag forward. Once you've done the easy side, same on the centre console side. You can see the tab you are shooting for circled in red Then, disconnect the horn spade connector and for the yellow airbag plug you need to get something small under the black locking tab to pop it out, then the connector releases......airbag is off
