Motorsport Tyres

Yo,

Where do you track junkies get your tyres from?  Surely there must be better places than Gordon Leven and Gary's motorsport in NSW to source my future tyre.

I want to tee up my next set of tyres.  DZ03G, R888R or Z221.

It seems so hard to find anything though.

No replies? I believe some people find that even with freight it is worthwhile to buy from

Personally I buy slicks from NZV8 teams as they sell them with lots of use left in them.

I just go to Gary's or Gordon and get raped like everyone else. Sometimes when they are a control tyre there is a discount of something like $5 per tyre so they are only 550 each.

The guys with the fastest tyres (Z221 and A050) know it, and charge accordingly. second tier tyres are much cheaper at about 350-400ea so if you don't need outright pace go for something else. The official distributors have a nice tight monopoly. Yes you can import them if the even doesn't need marked tyres (most control tyre events do) but how long are you willing to wait....

I can't believe how tight their grip is on the market.

I'm in a good position at the moment where I have a good 2-3 months before needing tyres.

I'm not concerned about getting the bees knees of tyres unless they are a great price.

Considering even the dz03g is going for the same price as a z221. Come on haha.

I wanted to try the new r888r but once again "they" are charging 400+ a tyre. Haha.

I might aswell just go and buy slicks at this rate.

The way it was explained to me by the Brisbane Hankook dealer is that firstly the volume of motorsport tyre sales is so low compared with regular tyre sales that none of the big boys are interested. It's also very specialised at to sizes, compounds etc, date of manufacture is also relevant, eg it's very easy to get stuck with old tyres that no one wants. Might add that this bloke spent a lot of time fitting and balancing the new Hankooks, it was not a 'wham bam there you go mate' job.

The man to talk to is Mick Hart at NTW, i'd try and do so via our club's contacts first rather than direct if possible. They are the importer and wholesaler and supply via SAU.  But you may find they are not imported anymore which would be a shame

    • Gents, it will be getting the MX5 Mania kit and the 2.5 will be staying where it is My query was about the 0.64 or the 0.86, whilst the 0.64 might spool a bit faster, would the 0.86 be better IRT EGT and mechanical sympathy, with only a small difference in spool And as I assume I won't need alot of boost to get to 200kw, probably around 10 psi, and with max rpm at 6500, would high EGT even really be a issue with a 0.64 I'm heading into MX5 Mania at the end of Jan to discuss the install, so any info is welcome prior to that Basically have a chat and book a time so they can throw on the turbo kit, and fit a oil cooler with a thermostat, drive in drive out of course  In other news: just finished cleaning the car inside and out, it's now all ready to get covered in bugs and dirt driving to Goulburn tomorrow to lunch,  and go for a stroll along woolondilly River with the daughter and her boy, and of course, visit my grandcats and my new grandpuppy
    • Sounds like it has an actual problem with mode select doors, or something.
    • Hope your all having a mean Xmas! If anyone happens to know any trick to using the insanely complex climate control system, I cannot get it to not be on dual zone no matter how many times I deselect it (will say it's not but both vents blow different temps). Also one side is always hot, one always cold 🤷
    • I'd be looking at the mentioned EFR kit, room to turn it up if decide on e85 (which we know you will) and be super responsive and fun on the street.
