Oil going missing = air/oil separator time?

I notice that when running the engine hard its now using some oil, but there's no smoke, and i cant see any oil leaks. I would have expected to see a little blue smoke if oil was getting consumed - can the engine be burning oil if there's no smoke? Should i get a catch can/air oil separator?

To see if its getting past the rings build up some speed and then lift off for a few seconds and then accelerate - a puff of smoke at this point suggests you are burning it

I always thought this tested worn valve stem seals, i.e, engine under vacume, then WOT and if it puffs blue smoke, valve stem seals are on way out.

Tried it - no smoke.

A previous engine of mine used a little oil but didn't produce any smoke at all. Leak down was in the high teens. If there's no oil in the pcv system just keep it topped up. Though a catch can or air oil separator is probably a good idea on any rb.
