Maxx Like your reply. All car have their positives and all people have taste, whether it be deamed good or bad.

A quick Rex has its weak points, but I will only give you the major one for street speed.

The CLUTCH has to be the worst of them and has to be upgrade from new. Sorry all, a rex with the std. clutch is slow off the line. The clamping pressure is shit and although clutch slipage is a must for a REX to launch with aggression, the std. will just spin on the flywheel, if the revs are too high or the engine will bog if clutch is dumped with the revs too low. Ever raced a Rex who bogs off the line...dumping the clutch just doesn't work for them. The Engine doesn't like load early in the rev. range and lag is there till about 3800 rpm. A decent Clutch with a lighter flywheel should be first upgrade and the best value for money.

STD. rex flywheel..........10.5kg

STD. STI flywheel............9.5kg

My STI..."DIRECT CLUTCH" upgrade with 6kg flywheel. (best performance upgrade money can buy)

For the GTR there are numerous types and brands of clutches...Have had HKS twin and that was utter rubbish....looked at OS....NISMO...ATS and others...so many different types, with so many conflicting reports and information or lack of information. Chose again a twin from "DIRECT CLUTCH" local manufacturer here in Brisbane....Light, street friendly and reliablly does the job...has more friction material and its quite, unlike some of the Japanese brands....for a bonus it's cheaper as well.

For a fast, fun streeter...reduce the lag and have a usable power to weight ratio...traction...handling...braking = ulimate fast than you street car. If you car fits the bill, then it's the one......leave out one of those and your second in my eyes.

every new wrx model seems to be faster, with the exception of the 2000 "bug eye" which was slower than the outgoing model, but current WRXs are faster than ever.

for a factory 2.0 turbo, they produce quite a lot of torque, about 300nm i think. and their kilowatt output is also high (165kw or so?).

their max. torque is comparable to a gts-t and a wrx and skyline both get to max kw/torque at about 6000rpm and the impreza is also a lighter car.

both the skyline and wrx are impressive sports cars. i wouldn't bag either one out..

OMG! this is a 1st, i have never seen an un-man car destroy a wrx or any car for that matter

dude get ur P's before u come in here and talk about ur soo called "fc" destroy other peoples cars, bit hard to do that hay if u cant drive

lol, forget his P's his 15 should get his L's first! probably hasn't driven a car yet.(i'm talking about VIC though not sure about when you can get ur L's in other states).

I don’t have traction issues off the line because of the setup my car runs, I imagine can get it off slightly slower than a WRX for the 20m sprint but after that its all over. Of course this is not going to be the case for all WRX’s. I have a few clips of when my car was standard racing WRX’s. I was about two cars behind off the line and then slowly caught it and finally overtook at 110. I have a newer clip against an STi that I completely owned with 220rwkw’s.

The newer model STI is some $10,000 cheaper off the show room floor, compared to my 4 door 2000 STI....but hey, it is 200kg heavier and has less kw's at the engine. It has the performance figures only of the older std. WRX model....go figure. I'm spectculaing that the current chasis is ment to be home for the 2.5 litre, not yet seen here in Aust. It will happen one day, because most previous STI owners don't enjoy driving slugs!!! The newer model would only be better if it was stroked.....but then there is always that 200kg's or 2 front row forwards sitting there with you....more weight = more required power. Stroke the older 200kg lighter car and you'd have a 10 sec. car, but most likely a dog box too....gearbox that is. Or tune it to run 11's all day, on street tires. Weight kills performance or empties your pockets. Make the compromise, between street or strip.

My opinion:

Best performance street car below $10000..... RX3 Rotary..if you can handle the stick in a can noise...then the 1200 Datto ute with different power plant.

Best performance steet car below $20000..... GTI-R ...then RX7.

Best performance steet car below $30000..... EVO III with mod's .... then WRX

Best performance steet car below $40000..... WRX STI 2000 .... then EVO IV with mod's ... then mildly modified R32 GTR.

Best performance steet car below $50000..... look at cars in the below $40000 then do $10,000 worth of extra upgrades..... then EVO V with mod's...then mildly modified R33 GTR.

Best performance steet car below $75000..... Modified R32 GTR...this should also be the limit on spending on 4 cyl. AWD Cars if they were to remain street able and were purchased second hand.

Best performance steet car below $90000..... Modified R33 GTR or show quality R32 GTR ..... then the R34GTR and only if your willing to spend an extra 20 to 50 grand on upgrades to match performances of other older street GTR's (looks are a waste of time if you get wiped by a REX.

Best performance street car below $125000.... Aust. modified R34 GTR....then show quality R33GTR....Then the Ulimate show winning R32GTR.

Best performance street car below $150000.... Aust. modified show quality R34 GTR....then Ultimate show quality R33GTR.....then second hand Post 1998 Porsche 911/996 twin turbo and only if your willing to spend an extra 50 grand on upgrades, so you don't get embarrassed by a Jap car.

This list can go forever....what you have is based on the bugget you are willing to spend.

Serious-Seven and Rb26_S15 try to keep it on topic please

I am on topic,

Serious-Seven is just a Di@K.

sorry.. its just RB26-S15 is a dreamer..

Na, sorry, I'm not the one whos dreaming that they had there L's.

Anyway, Just like Maxx said, the WRX is a great car, but not what I want in a car.

I like how STi's have the 'Parts made just for them', like the GFB Blow Off's for an example.

I dont understand how so many R33s are 'getting beaten' by WRXs

Ive never been beaten by standard/slightly modified WRX and am very close to STIs

I had 166rwkw a few months ago, and at that time was still a walk in the park versus normal WRX, infact, we even beat one with my mate james driving my car!

Its never by a huge amount, but its enough.

Since then ive added a few little things.. AVCR, Trust IC, Semi Slicks etc

Havent had the chance to go another rex since the mods, but there really isnt any point now. We had a full on go with some HSVs the other nite (on the track ofcourse) And all those boys couldnt beleive how fast my car was, even the 300kw gto coupe couldnt keep up when i was running 1bar, otherwise it was pretty even.

Oh, and just to finish it off... (I love this part)

My 33 is Auto

Muahahaha

Nah all respect to Subaru's, i like them, especially the fact you can buy brand new STI for the price of a second hand 33 GTR.

I think people get in WRXs, and because they make such a meaty sound and grab the road, they feel alot quicker than they actually are.

With the mods though, the WRX can be just as good if not better in getting the power to ground aspect.

And 33s with bullshit hard Tein suspension can start rattling and making some annoying noises after awhile, but soon as you floor it, all that turns into a nice smile ;)

knore when the HSV GEN III first came out at $100000 a pop....had a nice black one come up beside me, reving his donk at the lights, he even had the smile to match. (great looking car) Race over....within the first second. Had to look in the rear vision, just to see what his problem was....driver problem, thats all it was, no traction. Next set of lights, him beside me again....but all is quite and his not looking at me this time. Not so sure, if he was going to concentrate on the clutch release or not, but anyway, I though this time, I'd give him a head start....but anyway he only idled off the start and rolled to the speed limit down the road in front of me. He won that particular one...and with no effort at all, but when the story is told by him, I bet....and this may sound familar to some of you, who are not so truefully...he WOOP ASSED another STI to-day.

There a great looking car....but the technology is old... and they lack all of the Ultimate fast than you street car qualities, I listed a number of threads ago......I don't rate them in this category and when you talk to their owners...they love them for their look, size, torque and the noise. They meet all of those qualities, so great.

knore and other Bris. car lovers...we will have to meet...I,m back in Bris. every third week...the STI was detuned when I got the second GTR...std. boost, no coil-overs, APS kit, UNICHIP, front mount etc.....stock, except for the rotors/pads, front pipe, exhaust back to the std. STI muff and the flywheel/clutch, which has over 100,000km's on it now (needs a new Disc) and the 180km speed limited restricter is operational......but still weapon enough on the street.

GTR STI who cares let these tossa’s run their mouth, you know the real truth and eventually people that speak crap end up looking very dumb and extremely embarrassed.

I knew this guy from school who ended up with a VX SS that his parents bought him. He had done a few basic mods but that’s it. For months he had been trying to get me to drag him but I never bothered. He was telling people his car could own mine and all that usual crap.

Anyway, eventually we had a drag and I got a mate to film it, I stopped at the speed limit which found me to about 4~5 car lengths ahead. We all knew how much more the gap would have open up if I kept going :) Needless to say I have heard nothing about his car since :)

I prefer my Skyline for several reasons over the WRX. With budget in mind for a car between 15-20k (How much i was willing to spend), I think the r33 was a good buy as its more comfortable inside, and turns alot of heads on the outside.

Sure, some WRX's may beat the car if they spent a fair bit on the correct mods, however the R33 has a better feel to it inside and also when driving.

My favourite feature of my r33 would have to be Climate control :) I love it! Pretty sure the WRX dont have that facility...

Ive been through the same scenario, many a time :(

GTR STI

 i didnt say i dont like the monaro/gto, and im fairly sure the new monaros and GTOs have an even bigger engine than the Gen 3 V8. Im fairly sure they have a 300kw LS1. And there was no denying when we raced, it was for over 30mins on and off, so we both knew how fast each other cars were.

Your STI sounds pretty nice though, why did you de-tune it?

You guys have to get your facts right with a few things..

I'll refer to my previous post saying my whipper snipper equipped pushy could beat this and that.. Street racing is street racing, its rarely the full 400m from what I've experienced, in which case a mate says his 1.8litre Gemini could beat a wrx, I'm sure it would until 80km/h..

Same with an n/a supra, he smashed that until about 120, but this supra is a bit of a dog until 100..

Street racing is rarely a true test, however, its the only time where the wrx should have the advantage of 4wd, and get a decent lead, depending on how big that lead is and how much the skyline driver can keep traction up will depend on who's going to win, even at the end of it, the other guy may not have been trying..

heard many a story of some guy saying oh I beat this, and then thinking to myself, yeah, the old grandma probably didn't know you were racing her.

The true test is the track, and of course you take it to the track and 4wd isn't such a big advantage anymore.

I still remember reading the article about the 270kw gtr and the 270kw GTO or GTS and they were both dead even from rolling starts, however from a dead start, the GTR pulled away..

Now would that be the 4WD coming into play, or the fact that its a skyline and skylines beat anything.

knore Chris at Romano's....charges through the nose, but won't dick you around and knows more than most....the only place worth taking a REX. "CITY SUBURU" are the QLD. STI dealers, but the service manager knows shit and only wants the money.

Bax from what you've written....my push bike is your speed. No drama's it's carbon fibre, so the power to weight should be good....but hey when does your mum come home?
