Oil/Coolant substance in Engine Harness

If it's not one thing after another. So as I was removing my alternator due to an issue with receiving 18v from my charging system, a puddle of what appeared to be a oil/coolant mix formed next to my head on the floor. Now my car hasn't moved since Aug 12th due to a broken leg (only pulled it forward 8ft out of the garage once after disconnecting the alternator to hang ceiling racks and check voltage). This substance was legit pouring out of a connector (engine harness side not the power steering line) plugged into a power steering hard line directly under the alternator. Any ideas/suggestions as to what could be causing this? Any and all advice is appreciated.

if the liquid is conductive, it could be part of your alternator problem if its short circuiting anything... you may have to do your best to clean the harness and inspect for damage...

 

if its just engine oil or PS fluid, you're probably fine... if you've had water/coolant in there, it'll probably be ok once its dried out so long as its not corroded through or caused any bad joints/connections.

 

If your harness is really bad, you can probably get a section from a wrecker or (or maybe wiring specialties?) and patch it in upstream of where the damage is, or just replace the harness.

Have a look at wiring specialities and see if they sell a replacement section for that area of the harness if you have to go down that road.. brand new high quality is a good way to go if you end up replacing parts of the harness.

If you have to cut the harness and re-join a new bit on, add your own connector to make it a removable section.

IMHO the harness really could have done with a few more connectors for modularity from the factory.

Thanks for the info! @shaundI guess once I have the alternator and battery tested and it's a pass on both it may lead be back to this fluid issue. My only concern is even if I cut, substitute, or replace it may become prevelant again. Hopes were to find someone else that may have experienced a similar to find the likely source, which begs the question. This could be caused by a least two things right. Pressure from fluid at a sensor could be causing fluid to wick throughout the harness or if the fluid is conductive electricity could be walking the dog (pulling fluid) throughout the harness. One more thing I feel I need to add. The substance was not dripping out of the pins of that connector but rather out of the shielding on the outside between wire and loom.

If it is plugged into the hard line for the power steering then it is the pressure switch to bring the idle up when steering. Im guessing you did the simple things like look for a coolant leak etc? Its not power steering oil leaking through the switch?

    • So next year I am looking at upgrading from my VE SS bomadore ute to something more refined.  I wanted to stick with a V8 but not anything German or Australian, either a coupe or a sedan. So if I wanted anything newish that limited my options to either the Lexus RCF which I quite like. But with the price they demand and a kid on the way a 2 door coupe is probably not going to be the best idea. The next best thing would be the ISF but the newest models are 2014 and commanding over 60k and even the older 2008 models in ok condition starting around 35k is kind of bullshit. So I figured if I could not have the noise I could perhaps make do with easy power. Enter the infinity Q50 or Skyline equivalent. The price difference between the 300 and 400hp models seems a bit crazy. Right now there is 300hp Q50 one on carsales from a dealer with 61km for 27k drive away. If I wanted to get a 400hp Red or 400R car the prices seem to start at 43k From my limited research it seems that the only differences are that the 400r/Red Red runs more boost and a more aggressive tune. There are are turbine speed sensors on the turbos. Has 2 pumps for the water to air intercooler. Runs an engine oil cooler. I'm guessing that the exterior trims might look a little more sporty as well. I had a lazy look for upgrades to bridge the gap on z1motorsports They have kits that upgrade the water to air heat exchanger as well as the coolant pump which should give a non Red/400r better intercooling temps than the stock Red/400r. I added an engine oil cooler with a thermostat as well to try and make things as close as possible. Obviously the ECU is going to need a tickle. Having not done much in the way of research they also sell a ECU flashing tool with pre loaded tunes that are supposed to boost the non Red/400R by 100hp which adds 1k USD to the cost. The total cost of the parts @ the current time including shipping and taxes worked out to be $4350 AUD. Personally I would rather get the car tuned on a dyno which would probably add more cost Assuming the worst that you got a workshop to install the new parts I would guess no more than 5 hours would be required in the worst case @ 5 x $150 per hour = $750 So the total cost could be around $5100 So for easy number 5k + 27K = 32k I guess that would leave some change left over to swap out the open diff and fit a LSD Any thoughts?      
    • Right, not sure why I thought it to be a lean spike. It might be fixable with modern card-style hot film MAFs which have some design features to avoid counting reversion flow but I've never tried it myself.
