hi all,

I'd like to ask about the auction rating system in Japan, a lot of the time it is said that the car is 4.0 or 3.5 . what do those figure mean and what are they looking for when stating that.

also what are those H13, S55.....etc rating, they seem to have something to do with the cars age , but i couldnt find any logic to it.

sorry for asking here, but babelfish and the others are banned by my isp, no way to figure out what is written there for the time being.

The auction grade 1 to 5 is:

(1) High mileage, rough, damaged many owners poor mechanical condition.

(2) Poor condition in need of attention in both bodywork and mechanical defects

(3) Fair condition for age reasonably well maintained some miner faults.

(3.5)Good condition very few minor faults. Road worthy.

(4) One owner low mileage well serviced cars above average condition for year.

(4.5) Very good condition, mint cars for year, nearly new.

(5) As new. Showroom condition.

And H7, S51 etc is referring to the Japanese year counting system, according to the Emporer that is reigning at the time... "It was decided that each Emperors reign would constitute an era. The year in which an Emperor ascended to the throne would be the first year of a new era which would continue until his death.":

S = "Showa" (the name chosen for the period, not the Emporers personal name - "Hirohito")

S1 = the first year of the Showa period (1926) continued on through to S63 (1988)

H = "Heisei" (the current period we are in now)

H1 = the first year of the Heisei period (1989) continuing through to now, which is H16 (2004)

So the years you should be interested in are these:

S60 = 1985

S61 = 1986

S62 = 1987

S63 = 1988

H1 = 1989

H2 = 1990

H3 = 1991

H4 = 1992

H5 = 1993

H6 = 1994

H7 = 1995

H8 = 1996

H9 = 1997

H10 = 1998

H11 = 1999

H12 = 2000

H13 = 2001

H14 = 2002

H15 = 2003

H16 = 2004

I got all the auction grade info from a 2 minute Google search...

Justin, different Auctions have different grading systems...but they are pretty much relative.

Most work off a 1-10 scale...

10-Brand new car, 0 klms mileage, no scratches.

9-under 3 months old, has traveled less than 500 klms, like a new car.

8-under 6 months old, has traveled less than 1,000 klms, like a new car.

7-under 1 year old, has traveled less than 10,000 klms, like a new car (both inside and outside).

6-both inside and outside are good condition, standard mileage, may need slight repair.

5-

1. as same as 6 grade with slight repair.

2. metal plate , already painted. Well repaired, Inside and outside is upper average condition.

4.5-any age, bodywork is good, will be 5 grade with slight repair.

4-any age, mileage, with trace of repair, not repaired properly, need to repair again and the condition will be good enough for retail exhibit.

3.5-any age, mileage, need to repaired again in a part (corrosion, repaired trace). may have repaired trace in back panel and front buffer.

3-inside condition is bad, lots of rust & corrosion on exterior, the condition of repaired metal panels may be bad. Slightly damaged car (inner roof repaired, trunk floor repaired), colour changed car, unclear colour, damaged by sea air, etc.

2-car complete badly corroded, valueless.

1-inferior car, basically not exhibit.

A-accident car with slight damage.

B-accident car.

Most good cars at the auction will be 4, 4.5 or 5 with reasonable mileage, and whatever you buy...nothing lower then 3.5!

Oh and mazinger...please tell me what is Japanese suction system, is that some sort of Japanese massage :)

I've only ever seen the 1 -5 gradings on Auction sheets... strange man, they must be grading tightasses or something... :rofl:

Bwahahahahaha! :rolleyes: nah Troy, thats the JP-Drivers license course... 25,000 yen for the tests/lessons/paperwork, 275,000 yen into JAF.
Evo_Lee: i haven't seen any auction sites with the 1-10 system, almost all use the 1-5.

and its not my fault Acer puts the "A" so close to the "S", hence the new name "suction"

Really, I have only worked with 10 grading levels and my car was also bought and graded at 4.5.

Justin, yeah 10 seem to be more strict. Mine is a 4.5: 3 yo at the time, 43000km, no damage history, minor exterior scratches...very close to a 5.

I also was very close to buying their dedicated 400ps STi track car with dog box, no interior and roll cage...just like Steve's STi.

funkymonkey: you can always use one of those to take the dents outta your car :wassup:

seriously , my freind uses it to take a big dent at the rear. it looks ok for a few hours or so, but then goes back to normal.

and Evo_Lee: you'r better off with a EVO, the older ones. :)
