Hey SAU,

Thought it was about time that I started a thread for my build which has been happening over the last 3-4 years I think.
There have been some set backs and some highs/lows as pretty much every person has probably experienced.

THE BEGINNING

I purchased the car with the help of Iron Chef Imports. Fresh from Japan and the exact colour that I wanted.
The car is a R34 GTT Series 2 (2000 model), it was imported with just over 90,000km on the clock and a few little imperfections.
I was pretty happy because the price was reasonable and it also came with a complete set of SE37 rims, which can fetch a good penny.

The ownership didn't get off to a great start, as the car was imported and took roughly 9 months until it was finally in my hands.
It sat at the compliance shop for around 6-7 months of that time as I waited and waited. This was probably the most stressful part of the ownership of this car.
To know that the car was only a few hours away from me and just sitting locked up for so long was a killer. Iron Chef did as much as they could but unfortunately there was some sticky situation going on at compliance which meant it couldn't be released to me. So there it sat gather dust.

Finally the day came and I was told to go and pick the car up and pretty much GTFO, I had my Aunty and Uncle pick the car up for me and they had an argument with the owner at the shop as the car was received with bald tyres and headlights that didn't work. They had been audited during that 6-7 months and blamed it on me because they thought I was complaining with the compliance registry place. I went up to Sydney and picked the car up and finally it was at home. Just in time for me to head off to NZ for 4 months for work haha.

Took a snap before putting it in the garage and packing her away for another 4 months.

Met some awesome people over in NZ and managed to meet up with a SAU member Adam. He was nice enough to drive over and pick me up from the hotel and we went on a cruise with some like-minded people. Everyone was very welcoming, took a fair few photos. Below are a couple.

After returning from NZ, the build and collection of parts begins.
Creating a new post for that part.

BURNING OF FRIENDSHIPS

So upon returning home from NZ, I had some great plans for the car.
From the beginning the goal was always going to be 300rwkw on E85 with however much boost it took to get there on a responsive setup.

I already had a 250rwkw R33 which was great fun to drive, but it just didn't hit the spot.
Some of you guys will probably remember it as it had it's fair share of issues.

Well the story behind that car was a sad one, so I'll keep it as short as possible but I think it needs to be in here. As it helped set the course of this build.
I had saved up a good sum of coin while working over in NZ for the 4 months, so already had started ordering parts.

It was only a few months being back and my best friend since year 1 approached me and asked if he could purchase the R33 off me. The plan was to sell it and help fund the remaining costs of the R34 build. He didn't have the full amount upfront but had agreed to purchase it for $5,000 with $2,000 up front and the other $3,000 in a few weeks.

10296148_10152095436731483_5489335352090530254_o.thumb.jpg.be06f008cf3743a93d42a97a689a60a4.jpg

We swapped over the black rims from the R33 onto the R34 and I allowed him to borrow the SE37's until he found his own rims. I wasn't going to let him keep the SE37's as they were worth a fair bit. Fast forward a year and he still hadn't paid me the remaining $3,000 and he had also had the SE37's "stolen" from him. There goes that friendship and my plan to sell the R33 and SE37's to fund my project.

Anyways the R34 looked mint with the new black rims on it anyways, so I'm glad I had them. As you can see by this photo below, I was ashamed of the ugly series 2 front bar so I left it out of photos haha.

The front bar needed to go and needed to go ASAP!
Calling @34GeeTeeTee for help with that one!
(he was the one giving the most shit about the front bar, constantly posting puking emojis when ever he saw it)

GET RID OF THAT UGLY FRONT BAR!

I managed to source a nice series 1 bar from one of the guys on here, sorry couldn't remember the name for a shout out.
But Mat helped me find what I needed with a series 1 reo and all the parts needed with that as well.
Thanks buddy :D

Off it comes

Old vs New

It wasn't long until the front bar got painted, around the same time I purchased a new intercooler as well.
Both were installed at the same time, the front bars colour isn't perfect but I'm happy with it for a $200-300 job.
It also has some cool little black vents which I think are a nice touch.

MOAR LOW AND MOAR LOUD!

The car came with some HKS shocks but they were loud and clunky, so I decided to upgrade to some MCA Blue coilovers.
Currently the car is still only running with the back set in, haven't been bothered to put the front set in yet.

Also purchased a new exhaust from JustJap around the same time and both got installed.
The exhaust was fun for the first few days but then turned into being a problem and still is.
It's got a very very bad drone, hopefully this will be fixed soon in a new update.

I also got a highflow cat installed at the same time as the exhaust.

The car actually really hasn't been lowered at all, if anything it's probably higher than it was with the HKS exhaust.
I don't mind the way it sits at the moment but this may change later.

THE SOUND SYSTEM DOOF DOOF

I got a double din installed thanks to @Anfanee for wiring that up for me.
Haven't got any photos of it, he did a good job though :P

I was meant to get a Rockford Fosgate® setup out of the old R33 but yeah ummm..that's not happening anytime soon lol

COLLECTION OF PARTS

So not long after getting the exhaust and things done, I slowly started to collect parts.
Managed to source a Adaptronic ECU from a member on here, as well as getting a ethanol gauge from another.
These got stored away for a fair bit of time.

After talking with Tao from Hypergear, I decided on a ATR45SAT (ball bearing version)
The aim was still 300rwkw on E85 and what ever it made on 98.

13782049_10153837845686483_1841325098391024061_n.thumb.jpg.bce665e02edaa21e5bdabd040547eddb.jpg

However this is where I probably took a slightly wrong approach as I decided to keep the stock air box and also had already installed a return flow intercooler.
Both have always been argued as restrictions when it comes to trying to achieve a nice 300rwkw responsive car.
However I did get a nice metal intake pipe made up by @scotty nm35

Around this same time I also ordered a clutch, went with a organice heavy duty as I wasn't going to be tracking or drag racing and I wanted something nice for the street.

Looks great!

Interested to see how the car goes with the turnflow and that turbo as there seems to be a lot of discussion about it

It's actually already finished and turned.
Just slowly updating this when I get time at work.
I'll pm you the details

Yeah, I actually haven't checked to make sure the helical is still in it.
Could have easily been removed before I got it.

But when it spins in second, it doesn't seem to single peg.
Looked up and all I need to do is pretty much jack it up and spin the wheel to check.

TURBO INSTALL & CLUTCH

Decided to try the turbo install myself with the help of my brother in law.
Got pretty far into it and then found we would need some custom intercooler piping to work with the setup.
Also found why the car sounded like a wet fart.

Got some more goodies from another SAU member. This was sitting in the garage for nearly 2 years.
But it got packed into the car for when it was sent off for a tune.

Looks like someone found a home during the time of me either being in NZ or it sitting in Sydney for 7 or so months.

The car ended up getting sent off to the guys over at Import Parts & Mechanical Canberra.
They did an amazing job and installed the clutch, cat converter, finished off the turbo and did the intercooler piping for me.

Excuse the engine bay for being so bloody dirty.

TUNE & OTHER STUFF

Car got driven around untuned for around 6 or so months, never hit boost and just casually drove around like a grandma.
Got sick of never being able to hit boost, so I decided to get serious and purchase the last few parts needed for the tune.

Got a flex sensor from America.
Purchased a micron fuel filter

15934428_10154316252226483_290266084_n.png.75ffb71f6d5529291d5f458bf520c7c4.png

Then it was off to Jez for the full flex tune.
He installed the flex sensor, fuel pump, IAT sensor, fuel filter and wired up the ECU etc.
The drone from the car is a killer so got a long hotdog installed to see if that would help (spoiler! it didn't lol)

RESULTS & WOES

Wasn't long before the car was finished and the results came back.
Gotta say that I was happy but at the same time a little sad.
The decision to go return flow was detrimental to the power and ability to hold boost.

The car wasn't able to hold the 20psi throughout the rev range and therefor made power below what was expected of this turbo.
However I haven't had to cut a hole in my battery tray so that's a bonus.

Jez explained that with a better cooler he's pretty confident that I would see higher results and probably crack the 300rwkw mark.

16194869_10154375981131483_3091880825224997122_n.jpg.4189582d5c262027d0104079a280f6dd.jpg

The car got driven home by my brother in law and after a slight hiccup with a misfire caused by a coilpack plug coming loose, it was back to me.
I got to drive it for around 45min before going to pickup a mate and having the car drive like a slug.
It started to not build boost and just wouldn't go anywhere when you put your foot down.

Jez suspected a fuel issue and so I pulled the fuel pump out and found the hose kinked, should have replaced it but I pulled it off and fixed it up.
Put the same hose back on and clamped it with a second clamp just in case.

Pic of the kink:
16522471_10154397892711483_183727296_o.thumb.jpg.0ff93b6e0863cf1b12d2ed4796cb42ac.jpg

Anyways long story short, the car stopped running altogether, after swapping out coils for splitfires and doing a few other tests.
I decided to bite the bullet and just get it towed back to Jez.

16651291_10154409710331483_1635137061_o.thumb.jpg.580ace7205374e4e8e68a52d4269c6a4.jpg

He chucked a fuel pressure gauge on it and found it to have no pressure.
It seems the car went from hardly building fuel pressure to just not making pressure at all.
Jez pulled the fuel pump out and found what had happened to the hose I had straightened out.

16652845_1725702167759713_1113947893_n.thumb.jpg.dcdbdc29fd8b26842648ca9575d7485e.jpg

Hose was completely destroyed, I was banging my head because I probably should have checked it a second time.
But after checking the first time, it just didn't come to my mind to check it again once the car stopped working altogether.

Got replaced with some new different type of hose and did a road trip up the following weekend and picked it back up.
16652386_1725703977759532_1954974362_n.thumb.jpg.4235eb27d8fe834dc649c899024e3b72.jpg

We are now pretty much caught up to today's date.
So the next few updates will be me chasing down some engine noises that I currently have and also installing a newly purchase MTX-L Wideband O2 sensor.

Currently have a weird grinding noise between 1000-2000rpm coming from the front of the engine around the CAS/Cylinder 1
Going to try get the CAS off over the next few days and work out if that's what's causing it.

Video of the grinding noise if anyone is interested in hearing it.

The video is just there for the sound, not for the actual footage.
Had a few people comment on it being potato footage, the intent was just to get the noise not footage of the front of a normal RB25neo...

Also have a loud fuel pump, so might pull that out and try cut a bit off the bracket and install another clamp on there.
Hopefully that will stop the buzzing that it currently has.

It's interesting seeing your results. I have atr43ss2 with a cooling pro return flow and the first time I had it tuned it made about 280. Not long after getting it back it started knocking coming on boost. Took it back and 4 degrees of timing was taken out to keep it safe. Bringing it back to 250ish. Apparently it just couldn't take sensible timing and had high IAT. Wondering if it's same issues.

Also i had a gasket fail too, but it was the manifold one, was some cheap shit one and studs were finger tight

    • Surely the merged entity will be called "Honda" given the relative company values. I've got to be honest, I don't understand how merging 2 companies that missed EVs (despite Nissan making the first mass produced one) will solve their problems
    • If you haven't bought the ECU yet, I would strongly consider buying a modern ECU. Yes it is very easy to setup and tune, however it is lacking many of the features of a modern ECU. The pro plug in is something like 10 or 12 years old now? Can't remember exactly but it is very dated now. In that time the Elite was released and now we have the Nexus platform.  I would strongly consider not buying the ECU that is 3 generations old now (especially as it isn't a cheap ECU!).
    • Im happy for it as long as it means reanult gets the boot
    • Sorry I should have been more clear with the previous post.  The block is a sanding block - picture something like this https://motorguard.com/product/motor-guard-bgr161-bgr16-1-rigid-psa-sanding-block-2-5-8-x-16/ The guide coat is the paint It's two separate things I was talking about, there is no "block guide coat".
    • Maybe more accurately, you aren't just dulling the existing paint, you are giving the new paint something to 'grab on to'. By sanding the existing paint, you're creating a bunch of pores for the new paint to hook on to.  You can lay new paint over existing paint without sanding it, might last a year or two then sad times. The paint will peal/flake off in huge chunks. By sanding it, the new paint is able to hang onto it and won't flake off.  Depends on the primer you are using. When you buy your paint, as the paint supplier what grit of sand paper to use before you lay down the primer.  Use whatever you like as a guide coat. Pick a colour that really stands out in contrast to the paint. So say your sanding/painting a currently white car, using a black guide coat would work well. You very lightly lay the black guide coat down, then as you sand the car with the large block, all the high spots and low spots will stand out as the black paint is sanded off (or isn't sanded off).  When you buy your paint, hit up your supplier for recommendations for what paint to use for a guide coat if you're unsure what would work well with your setup.
