Advice/Recommendations: R34 Suspension repairs + coilovers

Hey guys.

I took my R34 GTT to Pedders for a full Brake, Steering and Suspension check after noticing some changes in my steering and road feedback.

Turns out I need about $1300 in wear and tear repairs, and I also need to replace all 4 shocks.

They said the only company that would make shocks for my car would be Bilstein and I'd need to get their Sports range which would end up costing me a fortune, and I'd be better off getting coilovers.

They quoted me $1900 extra ($3200 for everything) for their own coilovers. But they reckon the maximum ride height of their coilovers is slightly less than my current height (factory height), and I really don't want to lower it (my baby is all stock after all).

  1. I would prefer to get a full coilover conversion than just replace the shocks, but does this mean I will need to lower it a touch?
  2. Are the Pedders coilovers good quality? ie would you recommend them? or if not, who should I look at?
  3. Is the price quoted reasonable?

Thanks for any and all advice!

If going coilovers for Street driving, get some mca blues. They are cheaper (around 1650) and would be better than the pedders. I wouldn't be scared of lowering it a touch, say 30mm. If you look hard enough you could probably find some kyb brand standard replacement shocks. Pedders may not be able to get them but they are available. Whatever other components pedders quoted you for could probably be sourced for half the price and fitted elsewhere for a lot less. They do have to make a dollar after all.

EBay is your friend to check pricing and for supply of parts. Just stick to the known branded products and reputable sellers. The old way of picking up the phone and ringing around to suppliers can also work well sometimes.

Other places in sydney who can source and it suspension set ups - worth calling/email both to see what they can offer you at your budget.

If you are able to get coilovers, it's always good to try and have it fitted, aligned and if you can afford the $400 extra, cornerweighting which is essentially adjusting the height to fine tune the weight distribution across the front and rear of the car, this can make even cheap set-ups work really well.

Thanks for that. I might ring up the guys at Sydney Suspension. They've got a lot of good reviews and live right by me.

MCA Blue for sure. Contact MCA, tell them you after a comfortable street setup for your R34, they should send you a correctly set up set of suspension.

As mentioned, cheaper alternative is KYB replacement dampers.

Though I'd post in this thread also for anyone out west looking for import mechanics/suspension work.

Give these guys a ring, they up your way in springwood, they look after everything from suspension, mechanical work to tuning, they are also dealers for MCA coilovers, could be a good one-stop-shop option for you.
