2005 350gt V35 manual problem

Hi guys.My name is Fil.I've had a catastrophic fail with my Skyline. I was driving to work all was good ,i slowed down for a turn, went to change down from 5th to 4th gear and thats all she wrote.Idled car to side of the road,turned off back on put it into 1st gear but no movement.Can someone maybe point me to the fault?Gearbox?Clutch?Driveshaft fail?There were no bangs or weird noises If anyone can help I would be grateful because i love my car

Hi mate,

Need more info on this to diagnose...some questions you can answer:

1. When you changed from 5th to 4th what happened...did you lose drive in 4th?

2. How did you "idle" it to the side of the road? Just coasting or in one of the gears?

3. Do any of the gears work including reverse? If not, then input shaft could be snapped, clutch exploded or diff/tailshaft problem.

4. Does the car make any noises while idling in neutral? Does this change when you push the clutch in and out?

1: lost drive in 4th but no drive in any gear.

2:just coasted in neutral to a stop

3:no gears work including reverse

4:no weird noises in neutral or gear but when in gear and lifting foot to drive thats when theres a noise like something has broken or not engaging.Thanks for getting back to me any help in the right direction much appreciated. 

Does this noise also occur if you take your foot off the clutch in neutral? Or only when you've selected a gear? If the first one, sounds like input shaft has shredded its teeth or the clutch has exploded. If the second, then output shaft, tailshaft, diff or CV joint will be the culprit.

You said there were no bangs or crunches when you lost power, which is unusual for losing drive. Could be a CV joint has popped out or teeth have stripped off in the diff/gearbox perhaps.

Get it towed to a mechanic - once up on a hoist you'll be able to suss it out pretty easy. Hopefully it's in the drivetrain and not the gearbox/clutch that's gone on you - this gets more exxy!

Okay no noise in neutral could be a good sign because in neutral the clutch and input shaft are still rotating...so that means you've lost drive somewhere after the gearbox. HOPEFULLY not the output shaft of the gearbox. Likely culprits include tailshaft falling out / snapping (you'd probably notice this), a cv joint has popped out or snapped, or the diff has done a gear :)

    • Certainly. It is probably broken under the wire style clamp. At least that one is easier to get at than the front one.   Sounds like it isn't a major leak, I'd start with backing off the the water feed and return banjos into the turbos half a turn then tightening properly. Hardlines can still crack over time, either in the tube (particularly when turbos are changed if the banjo is siezed in the the tube) or at the brazed joins between the lines and the banjo fittings. A coolant system pressure test will reveal all. BTW you'd be able to get a sump without exchange, it will just cost more as they will have to source another stock one for the next customer. If you want to address the sump a much better option is something like this https://www.hioctanedirect.com/hi-octane-racing-sump-extension-nissan-rb26 that you weld in locally (and add the oil return fittings at the same time)
    • Pretty sure you are thinking of the throwout bearing there (which you should change when you change your clutch), when they are worn they will get quieter if you put your foot on the clutch. An input shaft bearing is turning/noisy at all times.
    • I’ll have more of a look into Recaros over the weekend. It’s taken me 2 days to figure out which Bride seats suit my application haha.
    • I am aware of their presence, but the product page looked like that conversion will eliminate the AWD capability. Fact remains it's kind of a hassle to send my oil sump halfway around the world and buying an extra one is expensive and unnecessary. Before I go hat route I'd explore more local options.    Would you recommend I just pull the engine and renew as many things as possible since I'm already having problems with some leaks? Would have to get an engine crane first though.
    • Are there any indicators that the vehicle is in limp mode?  Any dash light, or something.  Or is it just lack of acceleration?
