Brendons M35 build

Thought I'd create a mini build thread on my progress with my first foray into Nissan wagon life and also a place to ask questions/path to follow.

I bought the car with f**ked coil packs so I picked it up cheap off some Indian guy. Put a new set of coil packs in and all was sweet for the next 6 months . . .

I noticed an oil leak from the passenger side that was slowly getting worse and traced it back to the oil feed line. Ah well no biggy, just an easy fix or so I thought! Having not worked on a VQ before, it wasn't until later on I discovered you can't get the line off without pulling the whole turbo  Since the car wasn't far off 200k and the turbo had begun the Dyson whine song, I frantically searched for a new turbo. Scotty to the rescue with a Billet Intense he had spare that got to me in 4 days.

In the mean time while the car was off the road I set about fabbing up a 3" bellmouth dump pipe.

Then followed it up with a 3"-2.5" intake pipe. (Still need to weld on BOV return bung)

And this weekend just gone I fabbed up a 3" catless exhaust system to finish it all off. I picked up 7psi of boost without touching a thing, so it's stuck on 21psi with standard injectors and pump. I've hit up Christian to see if it's possible to run the car safely at this level on 98 with his flash tune, otherwise I will probably put a hi-flow cat in to drop the boost a little.

I've got a few other things in the works but all in due time!:10_wink:

Productive day trying out my my new pipe bender. Made up a rear subframe brace to help reduce some flex because the factory welds back there horrid. :2_grimacing:

I plan on making a few more of these up, so watch this space if you're interested in one:1311_thumbsup_tone2:

You can buy a brand new one from Nissan for around $100 but your looks solid and nice welding.

Replaced the headlight globes last weekend with some LED Nighteye ones off eBay.

Fixed the dodgy wiring job obviously done by the compliance shop and also fixed the issue with the passenger side globe constantly dropping out. The H1 globes earth through the clip into the light body but the clip had been bent and contact was poor. The LED globes have earth through the harness, so crimped on some plugs and walla!

They just fit in behind the cover luckily and beam spread is awesome. High beams are like having spotlights fitted.

Made the mounts for the FMIC. They just touch the grill mounting tabs on the front bumper by about 3mm so I'll have to dremel a little bit off but it won't be noticeable.

Also did the hot side piping and some of the cold side but forgot to grab a 3" 45 degree bend. I plan on making it 3" to the throttle body eventually as I need to run a 3" to 2.5" 45 degree reducer currently.

Made up the rear subframe front brace to finish off the trio. I'll make a few more up as usual and will look into gearbox bracing next.

Also got around to fabbing up the 3" IC piping that goes to the throttle body so it's full 3" from the FMIC. Just need to finish tidying up around where I silver soldered the nipples in and the BOV flange needs facing.

Finished off fitting the FMIC and wrapped the 3" throttle piping in heat reflective tape.

Next on the list is to make up a few little brackets to relocate the sensor and solenoid and clean up the hosing.

The plastic under body engine guard was looking pretty poor so I decided to make a new one up out some ali sheet. I made up a template and cut out a simplified version of the factory one. But what do you do when you don't have a sheet metal bender?...

You make your own one; and it works f**king mint  It's a heavy duty sucker that will do up to 3mm sheet and stores away nicely with removable handles. I still need to add some vertical supports to the angle that bolts down on the sheet and drill some holes to mount it to the bench instead of using clamps.

So with that side project made, I bent up the sheet and you end up with a nice shiny undertray.

I'm also working on something else too as you can see but it's still in the "refinement" stage.:1311_thumbsup_tone2:

Made up a smaller reo bar so I can fit a FMIC in without having to change condenser fan and also make more room to fit in a trans cooler.

Hey, any chance I can get the dimensions of that front bar? The length. I was considering doing the same type of thing to mine because of my fmic!

Just the length of the bar itself and how far in you did the bends

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

Bends are 130mm from the ends and total bar length is 690. Just make sure you slot the holes in the mounting plates otherwise it's a PITA to get on.

    • My extinguisher mounted like this unscrewed a little (Maybe from the chair sliding forward) and dumped a bit of white on my mats. I'll need to get a more narrow one for future.
    • I totally couldn't do the whole kids taking up my life thing! 😮 I find it bad enough doing 45 hours in 4 days, and then fitting normal adulting life into the other 3 with no kids! As for my mates race cars, they're AMG C63 setup for production racing. The original is what has just been stripped and a brand new shell built. The original is then going away to have some panels straightened, then it will be put back together again. Then there's a third that will shortly head off to have a roll cage put in, then build it up too. And potentially a fourth to be built too... Oh, and he has two Renault Clio D class production cars, ha ha. And when he's not racing them in the Australians and QLD production championships, he's been racing one of Chaz Mostert's Lamborghini's in GT4. They just won GT4 at the 12 hour in the Lambo. We're pushing to finish the new AMG as it has its first round (and potentially its first shakedown/outing) in under w weeks for Round one of QPC, and that round is really the shakedown to make sure it's all good for the Bathurst 6 hour, which I'll be at too. Ha ha ha Working on my project is different to his, I slowly tinker and work ways to make things happen on a shoe string budget. Hes in a good position that he has a massive workshop full of parts and tools, ha ha. He also looks after me. When his air compressor died, he just needed it working, so bought himself a new one and gave the old to me. Sand blaster unit too, and a 20t pressing. And pretty much all the shelving in my shed too as he upgraded all of his (the stuff he gave me is the expensive black Bunnings heavy duty stuff)!   I enjoy working on his stuff. No decision paralysis, and anything that's needed parts wise is just there. Plus, then I get to be hands on at the track in real racing, not just club day stuff.
    • I know which one I'd prefer to have in my garage, and which one I'd actually drive as intended
    • Yeah mate, no probs. Just swap the email addresses?
    • I definitely agree with you there - I never click on content for cars I would never ever be able to get or compete with/against/be seen next to. Seeing a MX5 compete with a FD RX7 will make people upset though, for sure. Even in 2.5L Turbo form which is pretty grass roots. (or at least as grass roots as classic cars can be) Yes we're all classic car owners now.
