M35 rough idle / shudder

Hi,

I've recenly had problems with the car and would like to know if it sounds familiar.

Symtoms :

- Rough idle : the car does not stall but you can definitely feel a  shudder

- Shudder also present when driving, especially around 2000-2500 rpm

Coming from the engine 100%, it is less noticeable once the turbo kicks in but there is a slight power loss too.

Problem has increased in intensity when I was driving it home.

If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

Mechanical skills close to null, if someone around Sydney is keen to have a look at it, I'd obviously pay for your time, but I can of course try a few things on my end too.

Cheers!

Contact m35stagea on this forum, he can help scan your car for fault codes.

Ok, will do thanks!

One more thing is that there is no lights on on the dash. No engine light nothing. Not sure if the diag will show something if engine light isn't even coming up :/

Do you have a link for the oem coil packs / spark plugs?

I'll change those and head over to m35stagea's place to give the car a scan.

Thanks for the help!

OEM are like $850. I got my NGK ones from Veales for $600. Spark plugs you can get from Super cheap for $120

Finally received the coil packs yesterday,

Started changing it today, went quite well on the passenger side (remember, I've close to no mechanical experience).

I don't know where to start on the driver side though because the middle coil is hardly accessible.

Can someone tell me how to proceed ?

On the bright side, I've started the car and it runs perfect so I got lucky, the faulty one was one of the first 3 I swapped :)

All done, thanks everyone! Glad I did it myself, will go to bed less stupid than I was when I woke up [emoji4]

Give yourself a pat on the back. Great to see people having a go. DIY is the way to go for most of these minor little odd jobs[emoji106]

    • It's something we all have to consider as time marches on. Also consider lifted rally MX5 conversion at that point.
    • I should be fine for a few more years, whilst I do have arthritis I also exercise and do mobility training every day to keep as fit and healthy as I can, military life, which is the actual cause of most of my joint issues, has set daily regimes, which I weirdly enjoy I also train alot smarter now, not really focusing on lots strength or puffy muscles, I'm more focused on maintaining what I have for my future older self, I actually train as much mobility now as I do exercising Check out this "simple" drill I have been doing daily prior to training now for a while now, this has worked wonders in my all round mobility
    • I'd say one thing that may make you sell is the same reason the guy with the hard top roof sold his. He got old, and his back was giving him too much grief stopping him getting in and out... Old guy said he was 73! He looked and sounded younger than 73 to me! Or maybe I'm just aligning with old people more...
    • Already looked at a few prior to getting the MX5, really nice car, had all the mod cons, but I wasn't really sold on the new "look" I did miss my 2017 Limited, and I personally prefer the "look" of the older car over the new model, but, when pondering I kept going back looking at MX5's But it was same same for the new ND's, I wasn't sold on the new "look", especially the RF with its weird roof, which only half goes down, like a targa top sort of thing As I stated before, I did look at NC's, but the cars I looked at were PRHT's, but I didn't like their roof line "look" of the PRHT, until I saw the soft top version, (someone on SAU posted a for sale ad for one with a soft top that caught my attention, you can blame them for my choice.....🤣) and.... that old style detachable hard tops were available for them, which keeps the old MX5 more smoother flowing roof line, and the more rounded body style, similar to the NA-NB, to me, the arse end of the ND looks to "modern" Much like how I prefer the NC1 front bar, over the later models How long will I keep this car for is unknown, but currently, there's nothing else out there that "floats my boat" for a small, fun, little "sports car", that I can play with and enjoy looking at and driving But, who knows what the future holds, and going off current new car styling, if I replace it, it will be a older model something something
