Will a Z32 CAS work on an R32 GT-R?

Hey guys,

I am having some issues which I have narrowed down to what (I believe) is the CAS but part availability is a bit of a bitch here in the states.  An RB26 series 1 CAS is going to run between $500-$600 with shipping.  There is a company here that sells rebuilds but they are out of stock with no anticipated date for getting inventory in.  I was wondering if a Z32 CAS ($140) would work in its place?

I have searched around on this and I have found some conflicting information and wanted to know if anyone here has tried this.  I saw one person claim to use one on an RB swap into a 240.  Some posts say the plug needs rewired, some allude to some internal adjustments to compensate for the trigger wheel being 120 degrees off.  I am not oppsed to cracking open the CAS to modify it to work but I don't want to waste my time if it's a non-starter.

The car was delivered to me back in February in partially running condition.  It would miss sporadically at partial throttle and would die out the moment I let off the gas.  Since then the car has stopped running altogether.  The last time I took it around the block to test a repair it was extremely hard to get restarted and keep running.  I limped it into the garage and it has been sitting there since.  The car will turn over and occasionally sounds like it wants to start but never does.  Sometimes I get a backfire.  The only code the car was throwing was for "ignition", I think it was a 12 but it has been a few months.

Work done so far:

Opened both MAF's to check for loose solders (all connections were good), cleaned both MAF's

Cleaned air filters (Mine's intake with K&N's)

New NGK BCPR7EIX Iridium plugs (it had some ngk race plugs installed when it arrived)

New battery

New coil packs

New coil pack wiring harness

New fuel pump (aeromotive 340)

New fuel filter

New ignition module (the old one tested bad and I really hope this would solve the issue haha)

Tried to start the car with starter fluid (sprayed in behind one of the mafs to avoid messing it up)

Thanks in advance for any feedback, suggestions, or input,

Brock

Thanks for the response Kiwi.  I can try to reach out to those sellers but I may run into issues getting the parts shipped internationally.  Sadly no one around here knows the first thing about Skylines so getting anything reconditioned would be a roll of the dice with a crazy premium added on.  If that were an option I would have had my current CAS refurbed already.  I have even considered pulling apart a Z32 CAS to see if I could use any of the pieces inside to refurb the unit myself.

I am still curious about the viability of the Z32 CAS as it would present a very cost effective and easy to source alternative to buying 25 year old used electronics and hoping they work.

Jealous of that Stagea btw, those things are sexy and we can't have them for another 5 years haha.

So the Trademe site is only open to residents of New Zealand and Australia and will not even let me register haha.  So it is back to the drawing board.  The Z32 and R32 CAS units are visually identical.  I feel like someone must have tried this at some point.  Maybe Skyline parts are just too easily found outside the USA!

    • Yeah the issue here is that we have a lot of topics, unless we matched on the exact word & phrase we'd get a million topics and the one you want will not likely be in the top 20 or so.
    • Yeah great idea, I have already added R32 Wiring Diagram but we can add as many as we want. 100% ! This has been something I've wanted to do for a while. I thought we could have a way for people to 'suggest' a link be added to the library when they come across something good.  We could kick this along by allowing members (maybe a subset) to tag threads they find to allow us to more easily find/locate/use good content, ie a tag 'for-library' which can then be added to the library and maybe have the tags reviewed and updated to better match the content. This would make it easier then to find the content when not using the library. We can also create pages that have lists of content with specific tags. That would allow us to add a tag and then have it automatically added to a page. We could have a page just for the 'for-library' content that we could then moderate and put wherever.  This excites me, the lack of structure with the amount of content is a little overwhelming.
    • Of course you can. That was a waste. Straight down one oil drain gallery and out the sump hole. Could at least have run the engine a little (obviously with at least minimum oil level on the stick).
    • Oh really? Maybe I'm being silly. I'll get some more shots. I had it higher but found that it went too high after a drive, I never knew this but exhausts can move around a bit when hot (makes sense, just never knew) and when it was higher it would make nice cooking plastic smells. That said, I could put some heat tape on a'la 90's R33 exhausts     Ha, I've spent a lot of my life in castle hill waiting for cars to be done. I think I'd prefer something closer but thanks D.
    • @Duncan Yes, changed filter every time. I don't have the service manual for the car yet (Car was imported and they removed everything when importing). I've been using the oil change threads in the forum as reference.   @Milkmun The second oil change was after ~4 months after the first months and I wasn't sure about reusing engine oil that was opened. The third oil change happened within 3 weeks of the second oil change and I used the previous leftover oil to just "clean up" the system. (Poured it through while the sump plug was open")
