Raced the car over the weekend, put the advan a050 on & got a wheel alignment friday.
Did some logging on the way out to the track and was having weired issues with it hitting a MAP Limit randomly under load.
Round 1 kept hitting a limiter at different loads and then lost all positve manifold pressure. Checked all the intercooler pipes and nothing wrong so pulled all the pipes and checked to see if BOV was stuck open but it was fine. Ended up pulling the external gate, stripping & inspecting it. Found nothing wrong so assembled it all started up and went for a quick drive and had boost again. To be safe I zeroed the wastegate table above 3500rpm and did the next session and no issues so random.
Car was perfect after that and ended up going 47.45 Finished 1st in class and tied 4th outright was beaten by rcr skeleton, BMW M3 race car, 400kw WRX and 600hp LS ae86.
The adavns are still the best tyre I have used and won't be going back to the nankang. Throttle blip was good for 2 corners and added another 5%. Need to do an oil change & bolt check will be sorted for another event. Should also look at a new clutch as was slipping towards the end of the day.
Really want to put the fixed back seat in so I'm not sliding around......

What are the Advans worth? what size you running?

I am still planning on moving to used slicks like the others in my club.

$2400 255/40/17

Every event I generally go to slicks would put me in open/formula classes. Would like to have a go one day with some. What slick are you going to go?

Ouch, 2-3 times the cost of AR1s?

In my club my car will already be the top class after the engine swap so i might as well run the same slicks they do (porsche cup i think?)

I will toss up what Semi's I use for other events. The Hankooks look OK.

Keen to see how much life you get out of those Advans. What compound?

look at your battery voltage in the logs, possibly some irregularities there?

So far done v8 sprint last year (5x 20min), around 1000km Street driving and this sprint day. Most people I know who run them get at least a year of sprint racing and consistent to the end.

Medium compound

@Dose Pipe Sutututu will do. Got to get a new alternator as drops voltage in hot weather and when all the fans and lights are on.

Took the sil80 out to the local hill climb for a run sunday. Car decided it didn't want to make boost so just ran it like that and still managed a 1.04:52 and 6th outright. Had a chat with some people about about the issue and seems the wastegate is getting stuck open so pulled it apart and found a few areas were marked on the valve shaft so cleaned it and linished the the shaft put it back on and everything seems fine now.
Booked King of QR in September and will start getting it ready for e85 and retune in the next few weeks.

  • 5 weeks later...

So after cleaning up the wastegate went back to the dyno with a tank of ethanol and did a bit of constant load tuning and got the fuel table good, went to do a power run and only made 4psi of manifold pressure. checked hose and did another pull to 4000rpm to see if happened again. Cracked the shits loaded it up and straight back in the shed. Gave it a day and investigated a bit more....................

Found the issue causing no boost........ Catalytic converter had collapsed after I had pulled the turbo off Batman Facepalm GIF by WE tv

So cat is now high flowed.

Decided to put rego back on it as got over towing it 7km to the dyno so now have a tank full of e85 and dyno booked for the morning. Been driving it daily for 2 days with no issues so far so will see how much the setup will make then do a few runs at lower boost levels to have a variety of Wastegate DC tables I can use.

Do you think Vicroads will let me re-reg my car after it has a full cage????

I've rarely heard of a cat actually collapsing and never personally seen one.

What causes it? Heat? Age? Abuse?

Probably not but should enquire about rally rego, that's what we have here.

Too much heat, vibration probably never looked at the why.

So it survived the dyno with someone who has a lot of experience and knowledge. That's all just on gate spring and solenoid just keeping it closed until 3500.

Any more boost and would blow spark out. Going to leave it for now and look at upgrading coil packs, alternator and clutch in the future.

After the dyno pulled the plugs and swapped back to usual NGK and no more spark issues car went awesome.

Did Targa Great Barrier Reef as navigator again in the commodore and took out Classic GT Class. Car is so much faster now with new engine and gearbox setup.

Done a few events in the past few weeks, ended up driving to the sil80 all the way to Brisbane and back all on e85 around 3000km. Did a test day at Lakeside DTC with Skid Control car was solid all day with no issues then did King of QR had a few issues with manifold to turbo nuts coming off & loose and pumping the catch can with oil. Fixed it all and did all but one layout, besides those problems car was super quick and all on the nexen sur4g (200 treadwear) which was pretty good for a budget tyre. Lost the starter motor for the last session and had to be pushed to started to get out on track and back to the brother in laws 😅

Got back home and did a lot of maintenance with all fluids and filters changed. When draining the gearbox oil had a lot of material and a synchro clip come out so box will be out soon.
Did the local hill climb and smashed my PB with a 59:43 which got me 4th outright and fastest rwd, got beaten by all the EVO's and a WRX.
Been daily driving it and still pretty cool to cruise around in and am finding it more comfortable than the 370.
Got the last sprint for the year next week, wanting to hopefully better my PB and maybe take the class win for the year.

Don't think a hoist will fit in here 😅

All moved down to Ipswich now. Got first hot hatch cup round at lakeside Saturday. Had a few problems with the getz running and it's stuck in Rockhampton at the moment so will be using a mates car.

Also got 2nd place in class for last season sprints in Townsville and only doing 4 of 7 rounds which is cool.

Nah it's coming down.

7x9x4 3 bay is going in, just waiting on detailed quote. Going to put in a clear floor hoist 😁

How's your build going, been much more progress than what you put instagram?

  • 1 month later...

Had the sil80 out a few weeks ago for some 1/8th mile drags at Lakeside. Car is hard to launch and just spins but once gets traction in 3rd is a jet.

Clutch was not engaging properly after 2-3 back to back runs and gearbox wasn't very smooth either. Been filming heaps lately and putting on YouTube.

    • LS is a good motor, but it hurts my soul when I see it in a RB. Guess it fixes the oiling issues lol.
    • I'm confused. Does this qualify as "Gregging" or are you somehow avoiding the Gregging?
    • More assembly going on, with all sorts of "bolt right on bro" scenarios going on here. Smartly, PTV clearance was checked. And I say smartly because it turns out that the intake was 0.009" from piston meeting valve. This is 0.23mm. This is very not okay. A fast meeting was facilitated between engine builder in Australia and engine builder in the USA which was actually incredibly helpful and constructive actually, various ideas thrown around to get around this issue including: 1) Retard the cam timing which would have brought the exhaust valve closer to meeting piston (it was 0.065") which was uncomfortably close to begin with, and change the cam profile making it 'laggier' 2) Much larger head gaskets which would reduce compression, but half the point of this was to increase compression. 3) New set of pistons ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$) 4) All of the above 5) Get ghetto The concept is you get sticky sandpaper and stick it back to a valve, slightly larger than the valve you/I'm using, like say from a LS3/rectangle port head. You now have a very super advanced flycutting tool to modify your pistons in your block. Then you install it in your head, and attach the other end of the head to a drill. Then you just replicate your valve smashing into a piston with your spinning drill.   This is the result. Repeat many times. It is strongly recommended you have some kind of fixed stop when doing this for extremely obvious reasons because if you press too hard then you're well into apocalyptic repercussion land. The minimum clearance on the intake valve is now 0.075" this is still in the "Too close to be really comfortable" and into "It should be fine" land. Supposedly in the real world the clearances will be slightly bigger. Guess this is what happens when people push envelopes for N/A engines instead of adding boost! Time to move onto the new, upgraded, higher ratio roller rockers from Yellaterra, all tapped and threaded with a stronger bolt for better stability. Very nice. Lets see how they fit. For f**ks sake. Time to bring the grinder out for these aftermarket, machined and CNC'd heads. Looks like the new, beefier rocker from YellaTerra has gone from Bolt on part to "Bolt on part". Well, lets see how this bolt on crank scraper and windage tray goes then, shall we? There actually is more clearance than they specify for this thing, but seeing it all move as you check it is terrifying when you see it all so very very very very nearly hit things. But after all, this is what the item is designed to do after all and actually did bolt on perfectly and have enough clearance to everything and some very clear and direct instructions. So +1 to Improved Racing I suppose. As above with the windage tray on. Photo of breaker bar wonkiness for added lols. Next up: Oil pump/front cover/water pump/sump and then it's time to actually install the heads, pushrods, head bolts, valve cover gaskets and such is all there and ready to go. (except the oil pump bolts which were previously longer for more clearance with the previously perfectly installed double row timing chain). There's definitely a sense that someone other than us has been here before and done everything perfectly, or at least considered it and came up with working solutions. Perhaps the previous cam was 6deg advanced to avoid PTV issues with the milled stock heads? In any case when I attempt to sell this stuff the buyers are going to be very directly informed.
    • my catch can is pretty easy to empty but it overflows due to the blowby/crank case pressure etc. max I have drained is ~600ml even with a ~2.3L capacity. So it is not just about having to drain it out its the mess it makes down the firewall and under the car and rear passenger tyre from the overflow oil being blasted by screamer + air in general. Ending up on the ground cleaning the oil up and having oil on your arms when everyone else can chill and watch the other sessions gets old fast
    • Yeah - the secret learned a long time ago is that the RB likes to belch oil out the covers, and/or starve the pump because it drowns the head in oil, because the upflow of crankcase gases from piston blowby comes up through the oil drain holes in the block and prevents the oil from flowing back down. The external vents from sump are about creating an alternative path/much more XS area for gas flow to decrease the gas velocity up through the oil drains and allow the oil to get back down. So, it's not about pressure at all. It is about flows - gas up and oil down - or when it's not working, gas up and oil not going where it is supposed to after it arrives at the top, except out through the cam cover vents. And regardless of whether the catch can is vented to air or vented to the turbo inlet, it must still be vented because a sealed system would blow out the crank seals, or something equally bad.
