Hey i have an R33 GTST and 3 and a half months ago i ran an engine flush in the oil and then dumped it and put a new filter on it and filled it with new oil, it fixed my lifter noise completely and it sounded brand new, now i used a cheapish semi synthetic cos i wanted to dump it and put some good stuff in it after a few months anyways but last night i went over a speed bump and i saw my oil light come on for a quick second so i pulled over and checked it and noticed that there was not enough oil in it to even register on the dipstick, i put oil in it and it took almost 2 and a half litres to get it back to full.

So the oil was full and new only 3.5 months ago and now it was so low it wasnt touching yhe dipstick even, but the car is parked in my shed all the time and i only drive 30mins a day and there is no oil on the shed floor and it doesnt blow smoke at all so where did that oil go in such a short time?

You haven't checked your oil level at all in 3 months of daily driving?
 
Especially after you know there where problems with the engine before and the common knowlege these engines are rubbish and always have problems.
 
 
These engines are rubbish and always have problems? What drugs are you on if you dont mind me asking lol

How many RB engines bite the dust with very low milage?

 

Who here had never a stupid problem like CAS, Coilpacks, AFMs or other million things like that that keeps him from driving it?

 

I had all the problems above and more, as a lot of other people. Every year a new one. Some more than once. Also a cracked head from one day to another. Almost knocked out oil pump drive. Always took (way to much) care of the car. Also a lot of other people I know had similar problems. And a shitload of people online had this problems in my more than 6 years as a owner and always online searching forums everyday.

 

If yours is fine, enjoy it before it goes bang. And start saving money for a rebuild.

 

Of course a lot of the needed engine rebuilds you see are done because of careless modifying/servicing from (previous) owners.

 

As always said, don't buy a Skyline if you can't afford a engine rebuild.

The stock engine WILL blow!

 

My personal opinion: I hate RB engines, but man, I love them when they are running. Could never give it away.

Fair enough man. I must be one of the lucky ones then. I've had mine for 7 years now and no issues with the motor at all. Its sitting on almost 200,000 kms (which isnt low mileage) with 150psi compression on all cylinders. Admittedly ive only been running around 230hp but recently upgraded a few parts and now sitting on 370hp so will be interesting to see how long it does last. But like with every other car motor on the planet they all require a rebuild at one point or another so you cant really single out the rb's as being unreliable. Obviously there are much stronger motors out there.

32's and 33's are over 20+ years old. Run with no faults.

Issues generally occur when modified.

32's have come up with oil starvation issues after 20yrs due to a design floor. Known problem.

Of course they become unreliable when you modify them without doing all the relevant upgrades required.

and last but not least is how you drive them past tolerances, and of course how you maintain them.

I think it's a little unfair to call an engine unreliable because it can easily make 200-600% the power it was engineered for...remember these came out making about 160rwkw brand new.

Anyway, just top it up and monitor weekly for a while. If it's not leaking where it's parked and it's not visibly smoking when running (particularly as it comes on boost) then into the coolant is the only other place a major leak could be. But you'd be surprised how much oil you can burn without it being obvious to the eye (or nose)

RBs unreliable? Please...these engines come to Australia with 100-150,000km+ already on them, after sitting in storage unserviced, then we go and double or triple their factory power without opening them up. It's testament to their exemplary engineering that I've have 280rwkw for over 100,000km, with 220,000 on the odo (aka actually 320,000), having only ever replaced a head gasket 20,000km ago because I thrashed the thing around a racetrack. Once that was replaced it felt like a new engine again! I don't limiter bash but I definitely drive that engine hard. Most of the common issues that appear on SAU are just standard wear items like coilpacks, wrong spark plug / gap, boosting/turbo related or not making the power they want.

Let's face it, just by looking at the condition and appearance of many Skylines, they haven't had the most meticulous owners over the years and I doubt many are as anal as I about servicing every 5,000km with new plugs and oil/filter, which I maintain has helped with engine longevity.

You can't beat Japanese reliability. The Aussie sedans give them a good run in our own backyard, but the engineering isn't quite the same league.

My skyline is like a sherman tank vs my "daily" BMW E90 335i.

It's been my back up car evertime the e90 has another "issue".

24 years old, godknows how many kms on the odo (fairly certain its being wond back), no engine issues yet...

Google "n54 meme" if you really want a high maintaince performance car (thaylt isn't a supercar) that chucks CELs everytime you fart in the seat lol

And BMW considers 1l oil every 1600km within specification for oil onsumption lol
