What is this wire? (r34)

So I recently bought a 1998 r34 gtt coupe and it wasn't perfect but I'm fixing it up and I've pulled the center console out to give it a clean and found this loose wire that i have no idea what it was for. Does anyone have any ideas? 

It's the grey one underneath the handbrake connected to the red quick connect terminal

A loose wire with a quick connect on it implies not original.  So you're guess as good as ours.  You have the advantage of being able to follow it back to where it came from and report back on what you find.

Not what but who. That's Jim the party wire, don't let his plain grey appearance fool you, and don't leave any alcohol in the car.

Does it tie into one of the wires connected to handbrake? If so, prob for a turbo timer.

Agreed prob a turbo timer wire....if you don't have a turbo timer then you can safely ignore it.

Yes it does go to the handbrake and the more i look at it the more i agree it's for a turbo timer. I've never had much experience with them so can't really say much but i appreciate the help!

No worries.  Splices in there cos meant to stop car running on with turbo timer if handbrake is not on.

So the turbo timer won't work if you don't put the handbrake on?

Not too sure what part exactly you're talking about but the car is yellow and has never been resprayed. I doubt the console has ever been taken off seeing as i found McDonald's chips down there (not sure what's more disturbing, the fact that they were there or the fact that they still looked okay)

Anti-theft.  Stops the engine as soon as thiefy drops the handbrake.

It's got power as soon as the ignition turns out but I'm not sure if it's only while the handbrake is on or off as well. Anti theft doesn't seem like the answer as anti theft would likely need power even when ignition is of

No.  Think about it.  You leave your car running on the timer.  Thiefy smashes a window and jumps in and drives it away.  If he has to drop the handbrake to drive it, and dropping the handbrake will stop the engine instantly.....then no drivey.

That makes more sense, i didn't realise the anti theft and the turbo timer were attached

Also safety. If you need engine to actually turn off when you switch the ignition off it will, unless handbrake up. Eg engine fire, no oil pressure etc

I didn't say that the TT and the alarm/immobiliser were attached.  What I said was that a thief cannot drive a car running on its turbo timer away, if it will stop as soon as he releases the handbrake.  The TT accepts a signal from the handbrake wire as an interlock.  That's all.

Interesting cos my '98 R33 has the grey lacquer type [not sure what the correct term is] finish to all interior metal parts....

Can't speak for all R34s but mines a 98 and is completely yellow inside and out
