Hey Guys,

Figured this would probably be the best way to re-introduce myself. Some of you may already know me, most of you probably don't. My name is Juan Vargas, I've been in the Nissan industry for basically as long as I've been into cars. started with Drifting and SR20's back in my high school days and the slippery slope of ruining my life started there. Worked for a Nascar race team in North Carolina straight out of high school; Motorsports swallowed me and it basically became my life. I formed a few partnerships but had shitty business partners and decided it would be best to just move forward on my own with my own beliefs and ethics without having anyone to potentially ruin things or do things with my business that I can't put my name on. ANYWAY, So i took a four almost five year break and had the opportunity to work at Fontana Nissan, to my surprise within one year of my employment there I was promoted to being the Motorsports Manager and basically became in charge of any technical issues, resolutions, R&D and EMS calibrations.

During my time at Fontana Nissan I was able to expand my network, meet more people and learn more about properly operating a business and dealing with customers. However that time has come to an end as I am pursuing other goals and moving forward to the next chapter in my life. I'm one semester away from graduating college with my focus in Computer Programming (embedded electronics) and so I've been spending the last few months studying and working on customer cars in my garage whenever I'm not doing school work.

with that said, I acquired the Old Fontana Nissan BNR32 after it sat at my house for the better part of the last two years after the dealership pulled that car from the previous shop that was working on it. (won't go into details on who or what happened out of professional courtesy) BUT long story short the car was pretty much dead and would need a new engine along with the wiring harness sorted. Since engine is rod knocking, has 60 psi in cylinder six and the harness is butchered. This is where the adventure on my personal BNR32 starts.

Most of you probably know the car, but for those that don't this is what the car started off looking like when I acquired it. just add a 4mm thick layer of dust and a ton of cob webs.

Since the car became officially mine I started to make it my own. I'm currently buried in school work and customer projects so I can't exactly make time to pull the engine and take it apart to see what caused it to fail, BUT since R's day was coming up I had to clean it up and at the very least clean up the wiring to make the car look like something I can put my name on. Which is the main reason why i didn't pop the hood I still have a fair amount of work to do under there before I can be proud to show that part of the car off.

BUT the bit of progress i got on the car made me extremely happy to call it my own. First order of business I ripped off the wrap, I'm not a fan of wrapping a car not my number 1 personal choice.

Next step was removing the R33 Brembo's off my Z32 along with the Gramlights since I will no longer be using my Z32 for competition I decided the best course of action was to take my Brembos for the GT-R and use the OE R32 calipers on the Z since that's more than enough for street use.

RSDAYPREP_9.jpg

before doing the exterior work I did have to address one issue, Kerryann is not as tall as I am so her sitting position had my helmet basically against the roll cage, which means I had to address that issue. I made a new seat fixed seat mount to maximize head room and clearance. I'm 6'1" so using sliders, helmet and a cage is damn near impossible. this puts me at the optimum seating position for my liking

RSDAYPREP_11.jpg

shameful spray paint, but nobody will see that much so it doesn't bother me as much.

RSDAYPREP_7.jpg

While the epoxy was drying off I started to clean the wiring under the dash and fix the engine harness, I was able to salvage the harness for now. Installed most of my Apexi electronics, made some 3" intakes with R35 MAF's and cleaned up the wiring for the EMS. I also made a new switch panel since the car had an AEM EMS and a bunch of AEM gauges I will no longer be using. I also installed my Blitz SBC-iD Spec R boost controller under the switches and got some better weather proof switches since the car has no windows at the moment. I also trimmed the shift lever bezel since the car doesn't have a center console there was no point to have the overhang and shift boot looking dumb.

RSDAYPREP_5.jpg

I took a break from laying awkwardly in the car and running wires under the dash and installed the brakes, sort of bled the system enough to be able to stop the car and installed the wheels. (system wasn't fully bled because I plan to delete the ABS on the car when the engine is out)

RSDAYPREP_6.jpg

Ended the day mounting the seat in it's rightful spot, perfect seating position for me and making a mount for the Power-FC ecu that will run the car.

After loading a base map into the car it cranked right over and idled on most cylinders, with a slight hint of audible rod knock. I had a good friend of mine come over and detail the car while i prepared stuff for R's Day 2018 and showed off how a little bit of clean up can completely change a car.

Here is my car at my booth at R's day along side Sam's R32 that I just finished building for him, R's day track event was the shake down for his car so it was a very busy but fun day for me.

so plans from here on out is squeeze some time to work on the car in between customer cars to pull the engine out, inspect the damage to figure out the root / cause of failure. install a good engine in the car let it be an engine I build or a replacement long block for now. Obviously I'd transfer the 2860-5's and some supporting mods to the new engine but that's all up in the air right now. ABS delete, will happen when I remove the engine

long term goals are, Single turbo conversion, Getrag Six Speed swap, replace all control arms with SPL Pieces, cut that cage out and make my own to higher specifications. Brand new fuel system, rear firewall / bulk head along with fuel cell. I also want to re-wire the entire chassis with new wires, connectors and install either a motec m84 ecu or a motec M130 along with the motec dash and PDM. (that's more than likely going to be one of the last things since the power-fc is more than capable for the level the car is currently at)

P.S. No I have not given up on my SRZ32 the VVL Swap on that should get updates after I'm done moving to Texas

Looks good! Would have thought a Link ECU would do all you want for less than Motec prices...

Actually speaking of that, Link just gave me an ECU for the car to try out, so I'll be using the Link and selling the PFC for now. I've tuned a ton of link and never really set myself up as a direct dealer / tuner but this years SEMA show changed that.

A lot of backstory I guess you wanted to let things out. Nice car and intersting look.

What do you have planned for it next?

Well it was mainly meant to be an introduction, I've lurked here for years just never really posted since most of my RB's had been into 240SX / Silvia or just customer Skyline. now that i have a GT-R of my own figured i should start to introduce myself properly

I"m actually going to try and shoot for the single turbo conversion to get it running soon, but that's only if i can sell the Garretts that are currently in the marketplace.

Glad you’re speaking up mate and your boys thread has been comprehensive.

In my opinion you should keep the Twins and focus more on engine mods.

I scored a BCNR33 long snout engine off my best friend's R32, I'm finally installing the 24U Engine i built for him years ago so we are doing some trading on that. his R33 engine is completely standard he's had it in his car for over 10 years and I think only driven it maybe 10,000 Kilos so I'm taking that from his hands. I'll more than likely just do some reliability mods for competition (Apexi Head Gasket, ARP Head Studs, Tomei Sump Baffle,)  reason I don't want to go buck wild on this car just yet is because I have an SR20VET project that I want to finish but the R32 would be the easier of the two to get back on the track if I don't turn this into a complete overhaul.  my motivation for doing the Single turbo right now is that I have a  Borgwarner S257SX-E Turbo and HKS 60mm Wastegate i was going to use on the VVL project that I'm now thinking will be far better suited for my GTR, if i can sell the 2860-5's quick enough that is.

Car looks nice. I’m in the throes of swapping a power fc for a link ecu so will

be interested to hear your opinion on how the two compare.

The only other comment is the front needs more neg camber GTR’s are bastards for understeer.

Honestly, they both work really well. I was going to stick to my Power-FC because I've had that thing since I was like 18/19 and was messing around with my RB20 Drift car. Power-FC is proven and reliable. However if you'd like to downsize the electronics in your car and have an ECU that can do boost control, launch control and all that modern stuff then Link and Haltech are both really good options. Ever since GTR's became easier to acquire stateside it's been what I've been doing the most aside from maintenance is installing modern electronics into these cars.

I can tell you. Link is superior in every single way. It's like comparing a CRT to a 4K LED TV.

Car looks good mate, keep the updates coming.

    • 2 does "sort of" applies, maybe......but looking at what parts would be needed for the swap to get engineered, registered, and insured, and basically that's everything under the car, the modifications the make it legal would be problematic and horrendously expensive, all for a street car that just cruises around and hits a few twisty roads on the weekends Also, from looking at the NSW rules and Regs, with all modifications that is required just to make the car safe and not twist itself to pieces, and then actually get registered for street use, may still be impossible nowadays As for 1, when you add in a fresh engine, fresh transmission, rear cradle and diff, tailshaft, suspension, brakes, cooling, and all the other fabrication required, your probably looking at up to $100k to do it right, all for a 20 year old MX5 that is over engineered and you would never be able to actually use the power it has on the street, much like your beastie, which I love, but you actually track that thing and can use all of its powers in anger, in a safe environment  Hell, the old Bogan Cruise Ship had more power than I could use on the street, and in hindsight, I went a bit silly on that thing, it didn't really need the 500hp it had for what I actually used the car for, it was fun, but basically unusable on the street if you value your licence  As for cams, yeah, I'll probably book it in for them to get installed and tuned soonish, like next month after MX5 Mania are back at work....... and yes, I've already sent a email to bin the turbo quote and quote instead to install cams and a new Fluidampr balancer that will suit the 2.5 better than the OEM 2.0 balancer that is swapped over for the 2.5 install, as the balancer needs to get pulled to time the cams it's a while your in there sort of thing I did think a bit about flex fuel for a laugh, but being na, and no where really around locally anymore to get E85, I've binned that idea, so no sweet sweet corn smells are set for the car I wish E85 was more of a standard fuel, it's better for the environment, better for tuning, plus that sweet sweet smell we all love As for fitting in the family, that's not needed, as everyone in the family already owns a car that can seat 5 humans comfortably enough, the MX5 is "my toy" As for buying a car that is already built, nah, I would rather pick and choose my parts, I enjoy the process, and in the big picture, the additional cost is well worth the enjoyment, and the occasional frustration, I get out of doing it, albeit with other people spinning the spanners, and me, just paying the invoice 🤣
    • Excuse me, but 2) does apply 1) Would also apply if you consider how much is spent in the alternatives. Also there's the option of 3), buy one pre-built that you can put your family in (it's me, it's my car)   That said, I went on a ~500km drive the other day. I didn't use anything more adventurous than 3rd/4th gear at about ~3000RPM and 50% throttle and I was going as fast as anyone has any sense doing on a public road, with enough grip to the point where I didn't want to go any faster. I was obviously under the limit of the current car etc etc. MX5 with 2.5 N/A to achieve the same speed would be more fun for any road scenario. Maybe consider cams. I wouldn't boost it. The use case is just not there and it won't actually make the car more enjoyable unless you really do plan on wringing gears from 1st to 3rd (at least) at 100% WOT on a public road to 150+kmh.
    • Great if: 1. You had all of the money for everything else that is required  2. Lived in a country where you could actually do this and drive it legally on the road Sadly, neither applies to me As for the turbo, I am having second thoughts, mainly for engineering/registration legality reasons and insurance  Not saying I've finished doing stupid things that I probably should do to the MX5, but boost, and V8 engine swaps isn't on the cards Strange, but true
    • I like this page, better than that silly turbo kit   https://v8roadsters.com/product-category/engine-conversions/engine-conversion-lsx/engine-conversion-lsx-nc/
    • That would be my Shoei helmet
