With GT-R values soaring in Japan I made the decision close to two years ago to start seriously hunting for the cleanest BCNR33 I could find. I knew if I waited any longer there would be no possibility of ever being able to afford one.

I enlisted the services of Iron Chef & the initial scope was a Grade 4 or 4.5 S3 97/98 GTR in Black; but this essentially was like trying to find a needle in a haystack. A few months into the search after seeing Piggaz 33R, I changed my mind and started searching for a QM1 White car.

As each week went by it became more & more difficult to find cars worth inspecting, and when they were inspected, they almost always had issues with rust underneath and/or strut tower rust and/or structural seam weld rust. Around the half-yearly mark, a 97 QM1 S3 caught our eye though we missed out on that and then found it a dealership in Japan for around the $60k mark. I then spoke to ImportR from SAU about his S3 GT-R, but while initially entertaining selling it he didn't have the heart to part with it. Alongside Steve's 7000km S3, his 33R would have to be the next cleanest out there.

Around the 14 month mark I'd started giving up hope and was toying with the idea of S8 RX-7's, but then I received an email from Iron Chef regarding a '96 QM1 Prostock R33 GT-R up for auction at USS Tokyo. The auction grade was 4.5 with 49,000kms & service history. The car just looked like a complete showstopper and upon inspecting it in the metal - Kristian, Troy & Myself realised 'this is the car'. After a bidding war the car was mine, & then slowly I started finding out about it's very interesting history. I have since been in contact with Prostock Motorsports who provided details about the build & the fact that the previous owner is very happy & suprised the car has ended up in Australia.

The GT-R spent it's entire life in Tokyo & this thread will present the two year period where the car was completely overhauled.The car was maintained at Nissan Prince Tokyo from it's beginnings and then sent by the owner (an older gentleman) to the GT-R Specialist ProStock Motorsports in Saitama Japan for a full overhaul in 2016. The invoices of the work was jaw-dropping, for many people it would be considered a once-in-a-lifetime build & after driving it - I feel it's the perfectly setup street car.

After a visit to Rigolis, they described it as one of the cleanest GT-R's they've ever seen. Nearly every single part has been replaced with brand new, while the undercarriage & seam seals remain original without rust (even the strut towers). Thankfully, the chassis rails haven't been jacked like nearly every other GT-R either. There is a little bit of minor surface rust in a couple of small spots, which is why I suspect the car may have been stored outside at some point in its life. But that was always expected, my S15 which has been in Australia since new has the exact same.

After a 4 hour marathon at the RTA which took a supervisor to overrule their know-it-all yet clueless staff member on RAWS importing rules & regs; the car was registered and the first drive was so damn sweet.

As for the exterior, I absolutely love it and photo's don't do it justice. The paintwork is original & this was confirmed with a micrometer yesterday. As for my future plans, I haven't even been thinking about it - I love the car as it is, it's been an amazing experience to drive & I'm sure I'll never be able to part with it. The Skyline GT-R is a very special car when you can find the right one, so good luck to whoever else is searching for one & thanks for reading :)

This looks amazing. Genuinely looks cleaner underneath than the new 33 i have picked up. [emoji50]

One minor note... technically the R33 i just bought it my wifes. [emoji16]

I'd love to read more about the history as you find it out. I find some of these cars have truely fascinating stories prior to their arrival in our hands.

Congrats sounds like an amazing car. Would also be very keen to hear more details about the overhaul in Japan. The 33 GTR was my first love of Nissans in the 90s and I'm glad there's still a lot of love for it.

That looks like a 300kw build, was all the good stuff stripped off before it came in?

Came here expecting 2.8l vcam, 6 speed conversion, nismo everything crazy head by the way it was talked up in another thread.
Still a very nice tidy street car though. [emoji106]

Paid a visit to the tuner's today, Scott & Adrian are blown away by the build quality of the car.

We ran it up on the dyno & moving forward we made the plan to improve the drive of the car with a KV8 ECU / E85 Fuel / Sensor package for next year.

The GT-R was running 1.3 bar in Japan, however it seems the previous owner wound it down to 1 bar before it was shipped off to Aus. At present it's running rich, and we also found the timing has been backed off 2 degrees. After the first dyno run we backed off the timing another 2 degrees until the new ECU.

Full pics of the build coming in due course, right now I'm planning a trip to Brazil so the thread is on the backburner.

You seem to work with the most vocal tuners and mechanics, everybody seems to be so outspoken about how great the car is 0_0 I've seen some very mint cars in workshops get nothing more than a "not bad" and a nod lol

It looks to be a tidy car, so what? 

It's not a 1000hp+ so who cares now?

    • Because all parts that are put into your papers usually are assigned a badging if they did not come with one. So other people can just check that badging to tell if it is the parts your papes outline. But my pipe has NOTHING on it whatsoever. No idea why this even passed as a Mines pipe to begin with. I see this going two ways: -nobody cares and it's a non-issue, but that is unlikely -the pipe will just have to be assigned a bagding, for sake of argument, a Mines logo, and the papers corrected accordingly If it interests you I will post what the actual solution ended up being. All I care about is that it has to sound equal length and nobody can screw me later on because of a pipe being illegal.
    • The fasteners to the pipe are not subject to TÜV I guess, if we really start putting nuts and bolts through technical tests I'm going to hang the people responsible and then myself. Usually on a modern-ish EU normed car, you would just replace the pipe. Because if you start hacking away at it and welding new pieces on the cops will definitely find a reason to tow your car. That is just how it is sadly. On old cars and imports with no clear "standard" stuff like that won't matter too much. Most cops or inspectors probably won't even really know what they are looking at. But there is experts for this stuff even among cops, and some of them know the rules to a T and even have extensive knowledge about many vehicles. For "just a pipe" to be legal it usually is included in a set of parts, like a complete intake kit or a full exhaust. For example my exhaust needs to pass a noise test, meaning they have a standardized test track with a set of instructions and they run the car through there 3x for an average noise value that is 75dB(a) at point x of the test track. If it's above that, fail. For a turbo setup to be put in your papers you have to do dyno runs, emissions testing etc. So quite costly
    • Would this not be the same for the exhaust you've posted up?  If your exhaust volume and emissions are fine, why does the brand of pipe matter? 
    • The issue is more the fact that there is inspectors that deal with japanese cars a lot and they might know what a real Mines pipe looks like. And then they're gonna get antsy and not pass your car. But I'd have to talk to one of them about this, because you know as well as me that it's just a damn pipe and it effectively doesn't do anything. As I need to have my GT2860s and my exhaust setup (and the increase in HP) TÜV'd anyways maybe they can just correct the entry in the papers or assign a badge to the front pipe. I'm no expert either though, will inquire about this.     Thanks for the insight. Not sure if having a custom made pipe is good or not. Will find out in due time I suppose. Would be kind of funny if this was made in Germany though.
    • See this is a really tricky topic as technically the same rules apply to all cars but for cars but there is a difference. If you want to modify a car like the Skyline which never existed here you have a bit more freedom as they do not adhere to EU specs anyway. Any modification you do has to be in dividually checked anyway so as long as one of the inspectors think it's ok and within the TÜV ruleset you can get stuff like a top secret rear diffuser put in your papers. Which frankly would need a shitload of tests and certificates for EU spec cars, like a 2010 BMW M3 for example. But if you DO run these tests and all tests come out ok (safety stuff for the most part) there is no problem running such a part legally. It's just way too expensive to do for a single person on one car. The most touchy parts are emissions related mods, like an exhaust, turbos, air intakes. If it makes noise or alters the carbon emissions it's essentially illegal until you prove it's not. Meaning it doesn't exceed noise limits or have worse carbon emissions. I'd say for hoses if you replace them same same it doesn't matter what material they are or what brand you use. Same for nuts and bolts usually, they won't go and specifically check that your water hoses and some bolts are 100% OEM parts, that is nonsense.
