1992 R32 GTR Atessa Leak at sensor/switch

Hello everyone!

 

i know I’m new to the site but I need some help. I dropped my differential to get to the atessa and found the leak at the wiring of the pressure sensor/switch.

 

does Anyone know if this is a sensor or a switch? 

If a sensor, has anyone tried switch it with an oil pressure sensor or anything that might work as a replacement?

 

i can’t find a replacement and looking at nissans parts catalog and countless researching I don’t think you can buy it separately. I also had no luck on researching suitable replacements.

I hope you can track one down.
If you cant you may have to repair the sensor assuming the sensor function is still ok.

It will require a good clean in the area that needs sealing and use something apropriate not just some glass silicon.
Maybe some good epoxy and after a sealant of high temp chemical resistance over it.

Treat it as a temporary and one day you may find what you need.

Clean it realy good at the leak and use some high temp epoxy.
Once dry coat with a high temp sealant.
You will need to expose the leak for a proper job or you can risk not doing that and hope it seals.

Dont clean the inner side of the sensor.
You should be able to fix it with out removal. Just MAYBE the wire cover where it joins.

I’ll try that I have some epoxy and sealant. After it’s cures I’ll run the pump on bleed mode see if continues to leak. 

 

Im just hoping it won’t grenade the black cover since it does have pressure on the other side

Download the R32 GTR service manual from your uncle Torrence.  It is quite readily available.  The whole ATESSA system is detailed from page CH-57 onwards.

The black can is a pressure switch, as shown in thisimage.png.701818ff763fe147e92d8615edbe8ce5.png

You can get the part number for it from google, or a Nissan FAST and you can buy them from Amayama, RHD Japan, et al.

And don't use f**king epoxy to try to stick it together.  It's a hydraulic system. The pressures inside are very large and will laugh hysterically at a patch of epoxy.

  find me the part number for that pressure switch then if you think it’s such an easy find. I’ve tried but all I keep getting is the whole unit with no replacement. The only replacement parts on the atessa I’ve found is the accumulator. I wouldn’t have posted otherwise

Without replacing it i think thats all that coul be done.
It will one day leak again and or grenade off.

Yes a much better idea.

What i dont get is you tell some one to start the car with ruber in the cylinder but god forbid you glue some plastic.

Oh, FFS!  A small piece of plastic inside the cylinder is less than no threat to the engine or the turbo.  That is why I gave that perfectly sound advice.

You cannot use epoxy to fix something that is running even 10 psi inside it, let alone the possibly hundreds of psi that you could expect in a hydraulic circuit.  There is a crack in the plastic, there is oil on the crack.  No glue is going to want to hold onto it properly anyway, let alone with that much force working against it.

I don't have FAST installed on my PC, and I don't have a suitable VIN to make it easy(er) to search.

You could use FAST yourself.  You could also do a directed google search on these forums because I am sure I have seen any number of threads about that pressure switch over the last 20 years.

I beg to differ on that.
If the crack is cleaned properly with some prepwash or similar and depending on how big it is... it may need some GOOD sealant in the crack first and an outer layer to stop exterior exposure of the epoxy.

THE PLASTIC HASNT EXPLODED AND SOME EPOXY IS WAY TOUGHER.

also it is a lot less detremental to the machine.

He said he couldnt track a piece... no one responded. So i thought id help.

I’m just looking to find a replacement pressure switch itself. Lol 

 

correction on that I have have used epoxy to seal an air line for my bags. Rubbed a hole in the line and nothing was open to get a replacement all I had was epoxy and sealed the air lines hole. Got me through a 3 hour drive back home. That line reached about 98psi at most.

I’m not new to forums. like I said... I have a bunch of tools at hand. I have researched google, forums, even nissans parts database(through a friend who works parts at Nissan) and also nissans system says “if leaking at switch replace system” and it gives me the part to the whole thing. I just need the switch like I said. If you can’t seem to find it don’t bust my balls ive been looking for the past 48 hours.

Don't use epoxy man, the system pressurises to around 250ish psi and would be a waste of time. Had a quick look on Nissan fast for you and you are out of luck, you can't buy switch by itself, probably because of the sealed nature of the unit under such high pressure. New ones for the whole assembly is over $3000 too !

Anyway found some good second hand ones. One on gum tree for $165 and JDM garage in Gold coast for $180.

I'd be giving Brad a call at JDM garage and getting the entire R32 GTR pump assembly he has, as it looks pretty clean and he's really good to deal with. Cheers, Ben

Lol haha yeah agreed but yeah no I wasn’t going to use epoxy anyway. I just realized from being a mechanic that I’ve seen similar sensors leak into the wiring tracing all the way up to the plug. So either way it will leak somehow.

 

 

BK I think I may have found a replacement switch actually I just need to do a little more research but it’s from the same company that originally supplies Nissan with Pressure sensors, switches, and solenoids. Going to check in the morning. I’m in the US so it’s 1am at the moment.

Expoxy is fine if it will hold. Do I think it will hold 250psi ?, no.

If you can get a switch great, at least there are some used full units around if you can't.

Did you end up finding a replacement switch without replacing the whole pump? I'm not keen on buying second hand parts or paying $4660AU for a whole new pump.

    • The two diagrams are equivalent. The R32 one is just one sheet out of about 3 showing everything in the whole car all at once. And without knowing the functionality that occurs in the modules, they are both equally opaque.
    • 8v - 2.48ms 9v - 2.15ms 10v - 1.74ms 11v - 1.41ms 12v - 1.15ms 13v - 0.99ms 14v - 0.89ms 15v - 0.82ms 16v - 0.81ms I'm running these values on my RB20 Neo with 570cc Denso R35 stock jets and it's great. Also bought a set for my Legnum VR4, love these injectors!
    • Thanks for your reply,  Those blue/green wires running to the actuator aren't attached to anything, so I'm not sure how the central locking is still working. I will have to take a good look tomorrow, I don't have the car with me. After googling it seems like a pretty common aftermarket actuator which even uses the same green/blue wires the immobiliser required. i'll test everything tomorrow and if it's working i'll melt the solder, strip it, resolder and neaten it all up with some heat shrink. I don't have to understand it if it works hahaha I just don't want a fire/ short circuit. That R32 diagram looks more like a continuity chart? Can you make sense of this form the R34 manual? 10V is probably due to very flat battery, i'll recheck as well tomorrow, I did have to jump start it haha. Thanks again!  
    • So, COM doesn't mean comms. It means common. What common itself means will depend on the type of device. For a two directional actuator (ie, one that can push and pull on the same output rod) then the common will typically just be the earth connection. There will be at least 2 other wires. If you put 12V on one of the other wires, then the actuator will push. On the other 12V wire, it will pull. Can't quite make out what is going on with the wiring of your actuator. It appears to have several wires at the actuator plug, but there only appears to be 2 wires where its loom approaches the door control module, with at least one of the others cut off. I don't know these actuators off by heart. I'd have to look at a wiring diagram for one before knowing what the wires were about, and that's despite me having to replace one in my car not all that long ago. Just not interesting enough to have dedicated memory set aside for trivia like that any more. That actuator is an aftermarket one, not the original one, which probably died and was replaced. That might require some sort of bodge job on wiring to make it work. Although nothing should justify the bodginess of the bodge job done. As to the soldering job on the door module's loom plug. Ahhahhahaha. Yes, very nasty. Again, I cant tell you what any of those wires do. You'd need to study the R34 wiring diagram (if you can find one that shows the door module). I don't think I have any. I'd have to study the R32 diagram to start to understand what mine is doing, and again, even though I've had a problem with mine for the last 25 years (where it locks the passenger door when the driver's window reaches top or bottom of travel) I'm just not interested enough to try to to work it out. So long as it's not burning down, it's fine with me. Here's the R32 GTR diagram, which, confusingly, has rear door lock actuators and window motors on it!! As you can see, unless you understand the functions of the door lock timer and the power window amplifier, you'll never be able to work out how it works just from the diagram. I don't imagine that the R34 one is any better. Hopefully an R34 aware bod can help. FWIW, the two wires that are cut and joined look like they are both power supply - so hopefully it is not fatal to join them. The 10V you measured on the cut off free end of one of them is concerning. You'd expect 12V, and it might be the reason for the bodge job joining them together.
