So I have a short list made out for things to upgrade on my R32 GTR. This list as of now is as follows:

Power FC

Deatschwerks low impedance 1000cc injectors

Walbro fuel pump

Nismo twin plate clutch

2860- 7 OR 5?!

Car already has an exhaust and intake system (HKS).

My question is to go with the -5 or -7?! I have read soooo many forums and ppl saying different things so I’m feeling it comes down to preference. I would like to make 450-500 hp at the wheels. I understand that the 7 more or less spools like my ceramics do now but will have more top end, where as the 5 comes in higher in the rpm range but have a ton of top end and can make serious power. I just want to make sure that what I do be safe and reliable at the same time if I go with either route. Any recommendations are appreciated.

The power you will get from the -7’s is fun and reliable where as if you go to the -5’s you will get more power but the clutch will take more of a beating and the head gasket will have a limited life (if that’s still stock)

perconally would be looking at an ECU with some safety features though as the old Power FC is a bit dated now. Haltech and Link are dependable brands.

Read the RB26 upgrade thread for ideas (and start at the end for some more modern set ups).

And yes you can do better than a PFC this century. And check that your HKS exhaust does not shrink down to 2 1/2 in at the muffler.

PowerFC is old and doesn't even have knock control. If you don't notice the blinking light while doing a hard pull it will let you destroy the engine. Even the stock ECU has knock control. If you want something that works with all the factory bits and is properly modern I think the best from what I've seen is the Haltech Elite 2000/2500.

Bosch 040 980cc injectors with adapters. NZEFI sells them with the resistor pack eliminator. These are proper Bosch injectors, most aftermarket injectors are not very good, don't faff about and go straight to what the OEMs would use.

If you are ok with ~450 whp max then I would go with the -9s, it is achievable with 98 RON/93 AKI gas. Especially if you are building a street car. -9s do not give much in power up at all in the critical 3000 rpm region to -7s, I've seen the dyno charts and it's maybe 5-10 whp. If you want to fix that region you need more displacement and/or VCAM. HKS has an intake side VVT kit, PRP is working on a dual VCAM kit that will really eke out every last bit of response possible from the RB26.

For fuel pump selection you need to decide if you want to run E85 or not now. If you want E85:

Stock fuel pump wiring only supports 15A max. If you want to run E85 with that much power you need a brushless fuel pump. A brushless fuel pump will be able to sustain much higher flow rates even at high pressures and means that the pump will not wear out faster in the presence of E85. Any brushed pump will wear out faster with E85 vs gasoline, this is a fact of life. Deatschwerks and Fuelab are making brushless pumps that will be available before end of year that will be able to sustain 500 whp within the stock 15A limit. Ti Automotive/Walbro is making a 500 lph brushless pump that will draw 25A like the 450 lph brushed pump but at massively higher flow rates, especially in forced induction applications.

For pump gas:

Nismo/Tomei 276 lph fuel pump and be done with it.

Also, ditch the pods if  you still have them. They don't filter as well as the stock airbox and will definitely increase silica content in your oil.

    • Uncle Duncan Yeap, FI Interchiller  Works well, normal IAT's cruising with the WTA only went from 50°c+ to 25-30°c with the interchiller  Before, when on it hard, the IAT would see 80-90°c, now, the highest has been was around 38°c IIRC IAT is measured under the blower hat I recommend it for the street or strip where your only on it hard for 10 or so seconds, but it wouldn't be efficient for sustained track use as it would heat soak from the AC turning off or whatever it does during WOT to protect the compressor It really needs the AC running for it to not heat soak and keep the WTA coolant chilled My WTA coolant temps when just cruising is around 2°c

    • I've been pondering this, I really enjoy the convertible thing, for me, it's like riding a motorbike, without all the issue of riding a motorbike, mainly, my old sore arthritic joints getting beaten up, and, being able to do it in shorts and a T-shirt and not needing a helmet and all the other gear required, especially like wearing jackets and pants in the summer, or needing 6 layers of cloths in the winter, or not having wet weather gear handy when your 100km away from home on the bike when it decides to start raining As for the hard top and its Coupe look, whilst I do lose all that open top feeling that I really enjoy, from my experience with the NB with a detachable hard top, the cabin is a much nicer place to be, the difference in noise for one, a hard top quietens down the interior, alot, with the soft top up or down it's pretty noisy, which, after 5 or so hours, can get tiring But, as you stated, the detachable hard top totally changes the look of the car, in a really good way, and for me, the look of a detachable hard top is so much better than the PRHT which looks more like a after thought with its weird bulbous rear roof line For me, the minimal effort of putting in on, or storing it after removing it, is well worth the time and effort for the look alone And yes, I'm sure the next owner will be grateful for it as well.......  
    • I get into huffs with people when I suggest the MX5 looks so much better as a coupe than it does as convertible. Pretty sure I don't prefer the convertible version of anything. Good job on the hardtop! The next buyer will appreciate.
    • IMO wrap does have its uses, but like you said, quality wrap, and professional installation, would probably cost want a quality paint job does, but, the paint, if maintained, is basically for life, and much easier to touch up if required  In other news: it's pissing down here, with thunder, lightning and only some small hail "at this stage", luckily all "my" cars are undercover  I've also been contacted by a guy in Newcastle about the SS, he said he will come down next weekend for a look, we'll see how that transpires I guess 🫰
