-9, -5 Turbo meaning

Hi All, 

I've seen alot of posts with people saying they have -5 or -9 twin turbo setups for sale

Can someone please enlighten me on the meaning of the -5 or -9?

Last part of the Garrett part#, and it gets a bit garbled as people use some of the turbo naming incorrectly at times when comparing them.

 

The GT2860R "-5" is part # 707160-5

The GT2859R "-9" is part # 707160-9

 

The reason the part number helps to know is that you end up with the right housings to bolt into the stock location.

It's also worth noting -5 is larger than -9 and -7 which is not obvious without the full part number. -5 is about as big as most people would go for twin low mount turbos on an rb26 as they are getting laggy.

Also, those part numbers are outdated, people just use them by convention now. The -9s now have ceramic ball bearings so their P/N is 836026-2. Not sure what the others are but something to keep in mind.

In simple terms, stock engine and basic supporting mods on pump 98 fuel. -9 can get you around 300awkws responsively, -5 can get you around 360awkws but its abit laggy.
