Gross.

You, not so much....

The Amarok V6(having the same donk as the Q7) is insanely good to tow with.  Our van is 2750kg and the Amarok still pulls like a beast with it on the back.

Yea my bro has one

get a tune and a catch can in and they are the goods 180rwkw

I hate all modern turbo diesels, they're all shit heaps. DPF's, direct injectors, stupid high rail pressures and the pumps to drive them, EGR valves, etc.

300kw Patrol pulls pretty well too and does away with most of the diesel aids. Have a look at the comparison they did towing 2 ton up Hotham where the Patrol beats the LC200 for economy (just) and grunt and I'm no Patrol lover. Yes I'm aware the Y62 is direct injection also - also gay. Or exhaust and tune it and have the sound, power, and no diesel aids.

Can you get better economy in a ute? Dunno, utes ride like shit compared to wagons and I'm not in a position to need the tray flexibility enough to warrant worse ride. Everyone should just buy what they like :D

My last comment on this so I don't block Fatz' post with non related merde but what I was alluding to was that you can't write something off without actually knowing all about it first.  Disclaimer - I work for a VW dealership so I'm biased as hell but I bought one myself as they're amazing.  Is it as comfy as a Patrol?  Possibly not.  Does it ride better than every other ute on the market?  Yes.  Can I drive it like a car?  Yes.  Does it have the features of a Ranger?  No.  I get 16-17L/100km when towing the van (2.75T).  I bought it hoping it would be towing my car to Winton on the regular but that kinda hasn't eventuated yet.

Ok, I'm done!  (see me for great VW deals :)).

Sounds like a good car for you, and not me. So enjoy it and I will keep driving my slow Prado for now.

Seriously considering at least some extractors... The intake and tune helped a bunch but a little extra wouldn't hurt with all the extra fatness on it.

Also, ranger and the drivers, might be the gayest of the lot, you made a wise choice to avoid it.

God don't get me started on the most overrated, under-performing brand on the planet....  I congratulate Toyota on convincing people that being reliable at the expense of making their vehicles capable is preferable.  Marketing brilliance.  But as you say, each to their own.  I'll take the risk that I might have one visit to the workshop now and then (but probably not) to be able to drive a vehicle that puts a smile on my face!  Reliable = boring.  That's why we all love Skylines!

I test drove a lot of shit before I bought this old Prado, nothing else came close in comfort for the money and I specifically wanted Petrol which left me with really old Landcruisers, Jeeps, and that's about it...

So when I found this thing with 64ks on it with a bunch of gear for less than 30k I snapped it up. I do enjoy rounding up lots of diesel owners in it lol

Like every car, it just needs more power. I would say that about anything I bought though.

Did 350k in my old prado towing

did 350k in the q7 towing

if you want to tow any wear near the speed limit go the vag

if you want to have resale go the prado

actually prado was f**ked after 250k but never stopped and q7 always had a check engine light on but never stopped as well

How many sets of injector seals did you do in the Q7?  They chew through them like lollies in the older generation!

Assume it was a diesel fatz, they are even worse than my petrol.

I live in the hills too and have a really steep dirty driveway so towing the Silvia in and out of town is going to be interesting when I actually get to use the car again.

Y62 is too big for me/my property so I really just want the Lexus V8 version of my car lol

Lol typical vag mechanic wanting to fix shit that doesn’t need fixing

they all needed doing but why would ya cause it results in a little weep that you degrease every 50k

Ha ha, it's not the oil you have to worry about.  Some of them get so bad you don't need an exhaust as most of it just comes out passed the injector and through the valve cover!

    • I think you're really missing the point. The spec is just the minimum spec that the fuel has to meet. The additive packages can, and do, go above that minimum if the fuel brand feels they need/want to. And so you get BP Ultimate or Shell Ultra (or whatever they call it) making promises to clean your engine better than the standard stuff....simply because they do actually put better additive packages in there. They do not waste special sauce on the plebian fuel if they can avoid it. I didn't say "energy density". I just said "density". That's right, the specific gravity (if you want to use a really shit old imperial description for mass per unit volume). The density being higher indicates a number of things, from reduces oxygen content, to increased numbers of double bonds or cyclic components. That then just happens to flow on to the calorific value on a volume basis being correspondingly higher. The calorific value on a mass basis barely changes, because almost all hydrocarbon materials have a very similar CV per kg. But whatever - the end result is that you do get a bit more energy per litre, which helps to offset some of the sting of the massive price bump over 91. I can go you one better than "I used to work at a fuel station". I had uni lecturers who worked at the Pt Stanvac refinery (at the time they were lecturing, as industry specialist lecturers) who were quite candid about the business. And granted, that was 30+ years ago, and you might note that I have stated above that I think the industry has since collected together near the bottom (quite like ISPs, when you think about it). Oh, did I mention that I am quite literally a combustion engineer? I'm designing (well, actually, trying to avoid designing and trying to make the junior engineer do it) a heavy fuel oil firing system for a cement plant in fricking Iraq, this week. Last week it was natural gas fired this-that. The week before it was LPG fired anode furnaces for a copper smelter (well, the burners for them, not the actual furnaces, which are just big dumb steel). I'm kinda all over fuels.
    • Well my freshly rebuilt RB25DET Neo went bang 1000kms in, completely fried big end bearing in cylinder 1 so bad my engine seized. No knocking or oil pressure issue prior to this happening, all happened within less than a second. Had Nitto oil pump, 8L baffled sump, head drain, oil restrictors, the lot put in to prevent me spinning a bearing like i did to need the rebuild. Mechanic that looked after the works has no idea what caused it. Reckoned it may have been bearing clearance wrong in cylinder 1 we have no idea. Machinist who did the work reckoned it was something on the mechanic. Anyway thats between them, i had no part in it, just paid the money Curiosity question, does the oil system on RB’s go sump > oil pump > filter > around engine? If so, if you had a leak on an oil filter relocation plate, say sump > oil pump > filter > LEAK > around engine would this cause a low oil pressure reading if the sensors was before the filter?   TIA
