Haven't updated this in a while.

But my local drag strip had a test and tune on the weekend. So I loaded up the skyline with axles and tools to change them then headed over.

With the setup how it drives on the street my goals were one don't break, and two try for an 11.

And I'm happy we say I managed both of those things, best 60ft over the weekend was a 2.0s, best time for the weekend was a 11.98@124mph. my reaction times were measurable by a calendar but it was a test and tune🤷‍♂️

Here's is my first run of the weekend, it was a 12.1@121

its been a year since i updated.

a few things have changed on the car, i managed to get a carbonglass bonnet for the car which was painted black.

after last drags i decided to swap from a 4.363:1 diff to a 3.9:1, that didn't work out due to the 3.9 I had having the wrong bolt spacing on the ring gear. So ended up putting 4.08:1 gears in the diff. This gave a nice increase in gearing but has removed some of the punchiness down low.

After waiting all winter for the drag strip to open covid stopped the first event.

but a mate hired the track for a private 1/8th mile day. the only draw back was the track wasn't preped, and was slippery then a street. this resulted in my car trying to kill me and lighting the tyres at any speed upto and including 200kph, but i managed to get second in our group in the roll racing we did. so won a beer :D

wellington weather stopped the second event, so this weekend there was finally a break in the weather and there was one day of racing.

first run out i bettered my 11.99@124 with a 11.91@131 my next two runs were 12.69@130 (left the car in second after the warm up skid and tried launching in second at 3200rpm... oops) the other was a 12.53@123 after mis-shifting third.

then went into elimination and missed third again, 12.49@127 that time. my final run of the day and last round before the weather set in i put an 11.9 as my dial in time against a 13.0 for a old firebird.

this time i managed to get third cleanly, but got treed by 0.3 seconds. turns out that didn't matter as i broke out and ran my best time ever.

a 11.846@130mph

 11.8.thumb.jpg.38ab6dcbf524c956ec5e0a3ec3a41d04.jpg

there is over 50kph difference in trap speed which was fun to experiance.

so now i have to wait till next year for another shot at the drags, next time i will look to turn up first and second gear as well as the launch and see if i can't improve the 1/8th mile time.

over all extremely happy with how the car went, multiple 130mph passes was fun

Awesome to see someone actually get their Skyline out and enjoy it!  Looks like she was quite the handful on the wet track, quite the butt puckering experience!

cheers mate.

that was a dry non prepped track lol and yes a few bites at the seat. forth gear got scary lol

wow so many updates of late. threw the car back on the dyno to see how much we could make after sorting the pump power supply issues.

turns out the demands of E90 was too much for pump to supply so now i am legitimately our of fuel pump. but did manage to get some more timing into the 20PSI tune. a huge thanks to Lithium for his tuning skills.

500 killer wasps is where the fun begins!

Awesome stuff, it must be insanely fun (scary) with that much power in a RWD car!

lol tbf 450kw with the rb30 torque is more then enough in a RWD street car... I only run 20psi in forth and fifth gear due to traction and gearbox strength lol

been a while since I updated this post so heres two years worth of stuff.

image.thumb.jpeg.61be5daafd6ebc56f76f35885abfa134.jpeg

In may of 22 the head gasket decided it wanted to let combustion get into the coolant, so the head came off got a skim, there was no sign of any damage to the gasket or signs of where it was leaking. so ditched the cometic head gasket and went to a Nitto one. and I've not had any issues with it since. so never use cometic head gaskets.

after that i got a Radium fuel pump hanger setup to overcome the fuel issues we had on the dyno, its a nice bit of kit but its so hard to get into the tank with the stock fuel level sender (I've since gone to a Frenchy's Performance Garage fuel level sensor as mine wasn't working):

image.thumb.jpeg.45f1a153fba13fe40b9f72c8692d9e1b.jpeg

So I had the fuel pumps sorted and went back to the dyno:

image.thumb.jpeg.e0e5c126f94820ad864b00b48822b88e.jpeg

but still had fuel pressure dropping off, turned out my -12an fuel filter was the restriction and could have been the cause of a lot of issues I've had regarding fuel flow. The filter it turns out is only rated to 7psi and was collapsing and causing a huge restriction.

That was replaced with a Turbosmart fuel filter.

And back to the dyno but this time a mainline hub dyno:

image.thumb.jpeg.89db6c033156f0618a543c19ffa7afd5.jpeg

This time I had voltage issues when the car was on e85 and set to 20psi, below that it was fine, so called the day at that point to chase wiring issues, by made 470rwkw on a mainline at 6500:

image.thumb.jpeg.ec3541ec7dd7e4a27ecf43131d8ae459.jpeg

so re did some wiring, replaced the alternator with a reputable branded one, changed the radiator to a Koyo one and installed a Frenchys radiator shroud as my fenix one didn't survive the head gasket and i was using a temporary one for a long time, I went from a four port boost solenoid to two three ports for better boost control.

image.thumb.jpeg.f263da213a25a9d65260f105a9536bdb.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.1bc62c953e099caeb6c0efb1f02e204c.jpeg

Then took the car back to the mainline dyno where finally we got a successful day. The turbo works really well on the RB30 and is able to make well over 20psi of boost well before 4000rpm which is more torque then i want to throw at the rods and tyres, so for the "full power run" it actually has a softer boost hit by design where it ramps to 20psi at around 4000rpm, then cranks up to around 23psi at 5000rpm and holds around there for full power. Final results are 420kw @ hubs @ 18psi on 98RON, and 500kw @ hubs @ 23psi on E85, with "full boost" hit by ~3700rpm

from here I need to get some tyres for the upcoming drag season and see if i can improve my 11.8. And look into gearbox options, a 8HP sounds really appealing and would make this an absolute monster, but i do like having a manual, so will save and see if speedtek gets any better.

here is a pic of the car out and about:

image.thumb.jpeg.6c2b8be46e43f9a3681a8620992d1464.jpeg

but thats it for now, I'll post any updated times as I get them.

and a massive thank you to @Lithium for all his efforts on the car over the years

Car looks great buddy, how are u finding the thermo fan, does it do its job well?  Is your ecu running it?

thanks :)

the engine use to really labour when the fan kicked in, but after getting the alternator and voltage issues sorted its fine now. i haven't driven the car in the summer with the shroud in, but it doesn't go over 93 when driving and at idle the fan keeps it at no more then 90.

I'm running a Vipec i88 which is Linkecu's old motorsport ecu, its identical to a g4+ xtreme. but if i go 8HP i'll swap to a Maxxecu race series

Latest round of updates on the car.

I purchased and installed a SWS clutch slipper to help with 60ft times and got some second-hand good condition 275/40R17 Hoosier DR2 radials.

image.thumb.jpeg.bace79a6d1bda3242e9a31b1e365376c.jpeg

Test and tune in November showed the tyres were an upgrade over my over 15 year old mickey Thompson's and I got a 1.8 second 60ft and pb et of 11.71 but even then, that run wasn't great due to rain and driver error (the event got called off 10 minutes later

image.thumb.jpeg.52ef716f1ea574c4ad08dbdef8592676.jpeg

fast forward to the weekend just gone 25th of Jan and there was finally a break in the weather to let racing happen.

The first run the track was slippery and only managed a 12.1@129

image.thumb.jpeg.f97131ac98cb859a8cf34a0043f062ae.jpeg

Second run the track was better and got a new pb et and mph: 11.54@131

image.thumb.jpeg.5a14c6c2c36dbb136cb47bf592324cdf.jpeg

Lith and I then worked out that I installed the previously mentioned clutch slipper incorrectly and its never been working, and I had just been dumping the clutch the entire time, we also noticed it was on street boost and not race boost.

So I lined up for a third run with the car turned up in the first two gears, but the passengers side axle objected to clutch dumps and left the chat which stopped my weekend.

so there will be another attempt in the future once I replace the tyres as they rubbed and are stuffed now. but a low 11 should be on the cards.

Bloody Skylines, they put you through the bloody wringer!

Stick at it!

Stunning drag strip BTW! Where is it? Can see part of the name on the slip and probably should just Google it!

its Masterton Motorplex just over the hill out of wellington.

It's a stunning location!  I've been to NZ twice but haven't made it to the North Island yet.  Definitely on the cards but the South Island is hard to tear yourself away from too...

Looking forward to see what you can wring out of it once you can get it to hold together!  Be awesome to get a low 11 or even sneaking into the high 10's pass out of it.  That's a bloody quick car that most people will never experience in their life.

Enjoy!

yeah the south island is stunning, the wifes family is from the west coast down there so we were down there for christmas.

a high 10 would be a stretch but hilarious if it happened. fourth gear is its party gear, i don't have traction to throw more at it at lower speeds.

I've found passengers don't think its that fast, i think it's because it has a digital dash so they can't see the needle move so they have no sense of speed
