alright so about 2 years ago i bought a auto NA r33. it has always had an issue where it seems to be stuck in 3rd gear or limp mode as you would say. ive replaced coilpacks, spark plugs, coil pack harness and the gearbox was swapped out for a better condition 5 speed auto box

Im yet to look at the AFM, O2 sensors or something else that could be causing the issue.

what exactly could be causing this issue as ive had no luck with facebook groups or other skyline owners.

any help would be appreciated

I don't believe the R33 has a limp mode as such so you just have a fault to find. If its the same with the new box then it could be in the wiring or the TCU.
Here is a fault finding plan I found somewhere else (if it doesn't work you may have to find a workshop with a scan tool):

OK, have noticed a few people having trouble with their automatic transmissions & some asking how to get codes out using self-diagnostics.
Nobody really seemed too sure so I thought Id create a thread about it & if people can reply, confirming that this works (its been a while...) maybe it will get sticky'd as its useful info for anyone with an auto...

OK, to get into auto-trans self-diagnostics mode, do as follows:

*Have car at operating temp, in P with O/D on
*Start engine, power light goes out in 2 secs
*Turn ignition off
*Move to D, O/D off
*Wait 2 secs, turn ignition on
*Wait 2 secs, move selector to 2
*O/D on
*Move selector to 1
*O/D off
*Press accelerator fully to floor & fully release

Codes are now flashed using power or snow/power buttons (dependant on model)
Sequence starts with 1 long flash. If all is OK this will be followed by 10 short flashes.
Errors are indicated by a long flash in the sequence of short flashes
eg. 1 long flash, 6 short flashes, 1 long flash, 3 short flashes is code 7

Code descriptions are as follows:

#1- Revolution sensor shorted or disconnected
#2- Speed sensor shorted or disconnected
#3- Throttle sensor shorted or disconnected
#4- Shift-solenoid A shorted or disconnected
#5- Shift-solenoid B shorted or disconnected
#6- Overrun clutch solenoid shorted or disconnected
#7- Lock-up solenoid shorted or disconnected
#8- Fluid temperature sensor disconnected or control unit power source damaged
#9- Engine-revolution sensor shorted or disconnected
#10- Line-pressure solenoid shorted or disconnected

Best of luck to anyone suffering problems & as I said please confirm if this worked for you

so i tried putting it into the self diagnosis mode, but for some reason after i finished the sequence, nothing happened. i tried doing it multiple times thinking maybe i didnt do it quick enough but it didnt make a difference

Not sure what you mean 5 speed auto, that doesn't exist for these cars.

Sorry Ben, you are completely wrong the de auto R33 is a 5 speed or 4 speed. Only turbo's and very late de's are 4 speed.

Have you checked the Brown plug situated on a bracket near/below the fuse box. It is clustered with two other plugs and if disconnected or damaged will lock the auto in third, find it, unplug and clean with electrical cleaner. If you cant find it let me know, I will photo the plug and post it (just not now its pissing with rain)

Wow, that is surprising. Thanks for the info. Never played with the de's, mistakenly thought would be same as turbo. Being non turbo needs all the help it can get!

Mind you I reckon a five speed behind the Turbo engine would help heaps on long distance drives, the 5th is only a push button overdrive after all, if you dont press the button you are driving a four speed.

yeah not too many people are aware the DE's came with a rare 5 speed auto variation. believe it or not the 10A fuse for the A/T control module had blown. and all seems fine now. thanks for the help though guys

Mate you are shameless, you have changed half the engine bay components, but for two years you didn't check the fuses. Incredible.

    • Solid update, got all the downforces now.  You going to be running aus time attack again? love the jacking solution, spend the dollars on what makes it go fast is best way.
    • Back in January, I noticed my car felt noticeably weak. I had the injectors cleaned, which seemed to solve the problem -- until now. Recently, the car suddenly lost power again while driving. Suspecting the injectors, I brought it to the mechanic. He recommended replacing them entirely, saying the current ones were getting unreliable and fiddly to work with. I could not find a direct replacement for my current injectors. The closest match I found were 440cc injectors. This led me to look into the possibility of upgrading -- and of course, that would mean remapping the ECU. From my research I found: The OEM Part numbers are 16600-72L20 and 16600-72L21 Both the RB20DE and RB20DET use the same 270cc injectors. There are much better options out there over the old OEM injectors. Nistune could be a viable tuning option. While the RB20DE isn’t explicitly listed on their site, the ECU is essentially the same as the GTS-T version - just with a different map. The ECU code on mine is listed as supported. One concern is finding a tuner who works with Nistune. Aftermarket ECU like Haltech and Link, but this would be the most expensive choice (and possibly overkill for a mostly stock RB20DE) I admit that I am very new to the tuning scene and would appreciate any insight or recommendations regarding this.   These are some SAU links where I got some of my information from for reference: https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/380324-rb20de-injectors/ https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/477396-factory-270cc-injectors/
    • The inspectors are not forensic by any means but if you forge your documents and/or badgings on vehicle parts and are found out, the consequences are just far bigger than if you just run illegal parts. And their job quite literally is to cross reference what parts you got installed and what your papers say you got. Something as silly as your suspension being 1mm too low will fail you. Nonetheless I asked if someone knew the damn pipe and I certainly did not ask for smartassery or underhanded comments, no idea why you need to be told this. Great way to waste both our time.
    • As useful as you explaining what forgery is... But then again, I wasn't aware your inspectors were also forensic experts and inspect nameplates on each component to confirm everything is original. They must inspect roughly 3 cars a year at that rate. You're right though, my comment doesn't help you in anyway, so I'll go talk to my wall now. Cheers.
    • Say that to the guy that is going to fail your inspection or tow your car for illegal exhaust modifications. If you have anything else useful to say, please go tell your wall.
