Hey guys

I put my stagea back together and have few questions. Its a s1 c34 stagea with an RB3025

Front shafts have been removed and RB30 sump used.

Can the bands in the box be tightened up? Cause i was told by the gearbox guy that there is no adjustment possible. The issue is 3rd flares under some load and generally it drops down gears a bit to eagerly.  It will hold 4th on a flat

Also, it wont go into Park anymore, is that common ?

Finally, should i grab another box and throw it in or rebuild it? Mechanic guy quoted $1600 just to swap a secondhand box in which seems steep..

Is there a reason why you don't want to go manual?  My box packed up with just the modified turbo so I put a manual box in before I got the RB30.

To answer your questions you will have to spend thousands to get your box to take significantly more than stock power. There is someone on this site that has such a box for sale but I forget who he is and don't know how much he wants for it.

The go to guy was Mike at MV Automatics in Adelaide [email protected] who makes a shift kit he will send to you but I think that just gives you a crisper change and don't think it adds to the ability of the box to take big power. You could give him a ring any way.

Have you tried the for sale or parts wanted section? I think people just throw away their autos when they go manual. There are a couple of people on this site right now doing manual conversions.

Can i use an R34GTT 2wd autobox?

Yes you could, but my experience was the RE4R01A doesn't like the torque increase when you go 30. So I installed a RE4R03A out of a Z32 in my R33. Two years and still going strong.

Does it bolt straight up and work?

I already have a manual in my r33,  this car i want to be auto to be different and with manuals unless i pay $3k from japan for a new box it might turn out to have worn synchros/crunching etc anyway..

If i remove and install myself then maybe will get away with $2kish??

Need to shorten front half of drive shaft using z32 yoke, cause the box is longer, and change the bellhousing for your original and sort out the electrics. Mine was done by Joel at JB autos over Cleveland way

Ahh well thats not too far but labour adds up unless i just tow it once ive installed it, z32 autos are pretty old now though

I like the z32 idea though as would be strong and cheap

Joel told me can easily handle 600hp. I paid $250 for a good one and had it checked by him and some new parts were fitted. Hardy Spicer built me a new taiLshaft for $500.
