Hey guys,

Nearing the final stages of stripping my R32GTR transmission before blasting and powder coat (then new gearbox).

Mostof the hard work is done, but I’m stuck getting the casing separated from the gears (bell housing is already off).

See pics below - basically the 2 metal pieces which attach to/form part of the shifting mech are stopping me from sliding the gears out in both directions as they’re hitting the housing.

I can’t work out how to remove them so the gears can be removed. Anyone have experience doing this? It looks like there might be pins through them, but not sure if that’s unrelated.

Thanks,

Andrew.

Awesome! That was my suspicion. Got the one facing the bell housing out using a skinny drill bit and tapping it with a hammer.

Rear facing one isn’t having any of it though. Persistence?

Any other major hurdles you’re aware of for the rest of the tear down?

@Duncan @GTSBoy

Got them out! Thanks guys.

Any thoughts on removing this unit?

Have all the 12mm’s out. Now looks like there’s a large central hex bolt and 2 star shaped bolts to go, if I’m right. Don’t have either of those bits unfortunately.

@Duncan @GTSBoy and one final question. I think my skills may have now outrun the requirement.

I need to remove the part circled in blue (for powdercoating) and it seems to me that the way to do that probably requires a bunch of bearings (in the red area) will need to be pulled. Does that sound right?

might be time to admit defeat and take it to the mechanic.

I applaud you for having a go, but, Mate, you are so far out of your depth it's not funny. If you are having trouble disassembling a transfer case, you have absolutely no hope of disassembling the Gearset from the centre plate, let alone reassembling it correctly.

Seriously before you stuff something up, put the tools down now and take it to a gearbox place please.

Are you really doing all of this just for powder coating ? Just sandblasting the cases looks heaps better and is more practical. And cheaper.

Taking to a recommended transmission specialist today. It all needs to come apart anyway as the gears will be replaced with either a Getrag or PPG box. Agree that sandblasting looks good, but for the level of build we're doing it needs to be coated. The entire underbody (subframes, arms, diff, etc) has been stripped and will be coated while the car's on the rotisserie for paint.

Yes, absolutely. The centreplate is the main structural part of the gearbox. Everything is assembled onto it. If you want to powdercoat it, you have no option but for a complete disassembly of the clusters from it.

Thanks mate. Getting it done this week... professionally ?

So I guess "show quality" street drag then. Sequential or auto in the end I guess. 8's is a tall order with a H pattern.

Sounds like a full on chassis up build, can't wait to see it. You got a build thread for it ? Sounds interesting....

    • I've watched some vids and the technique seems to be to butt the sheets up to one another and use MIG to spot weld and slowly fill in the spots until its eventually all sealed. No runs as you would normally do, as there's too much heat generated that way. Yeah my stick welds are terrible these days because its been so long since i've done any of it. I expect to be spending many hours practicing
    • I have personally seen a Tomei USA RB26 cam that didn't even fit the head. Kind of nuts to me that it was even possible for that to happen but such is life.  There's two UP Garages in the US. One is a US branch of the Japanese company which sells things they brought over at tremendous markup. The other is University Place Garage/Fairlady Motors which is a shop best known for putting VCAM in RBs and trying to convince people to stop putting in 800hp of turbo on a 2.5L motor.
    • Gasless MIG is not exactly suited to what I would call "delicate" or "attractive" welding. So I would rule it out for sheet metal rust repair type stuff, unless you're only doing it in hidden places. I'm thinking about getting myself a gasless MIG for "hack together" type work. Noting that my welding experience is very very low, and quite a long time ago. So I'm also looking for "simple", but I'm not expecting "excellent". I'm not even sure that proper MIG is the best for sheet metal work. I get the feeling that the degree of control and the minimisation of heat input that you get from TIG is probably what you really want. And then you have to get good at doing it before the welds won't look like a monkey flinging a handful of shit anyway. You're probably SOL for an easy and cheap way to get from where you are to where you want to be. Much like myself.
    • Any recommendations for what would be the easiest welding type to start on, for sheet metal rust repairs and maybe some exhaust piping too? Seems like MIG is the most common. Would gasless MIG be ok to learn on and do some simple jobs? I have a stick welder which has a Lift TIG setting, but i'm more interested in getting whatever's easiest to do, and most suitable, rather than using what i have.
