Someone should add "Gregging" and "To Greg" to urban dictionary.

Simon Cowell Reaction GIF by America's Got Talent

For what it's worth, this thread reminds me of me in the earlier days of car modding, I only had forums and a couple equally clueless mates to help, thank god I had one genuinely good mechanic mate who could assist from time to time when I'd really F'd up. Youtube was a game changer for sure.

I think these stories are important because we all start somewhere. I STILL catch myself stripping bolts "just a little tighter" and making more work for myself "wouldn't it be cool if..." but on the whole have slowly over the last 2 decades become as good as a 2nd year apprentice mechanic 🥳

If you go back and read my first threads about my R33, I share warts and all, always have.

I also like testing things so have always shared results of that too.

Happy to report I changed the oil in the daily last night and nothing bad happened :)

Guys its important to understand I didn't initially fk the headlight and it now works properly again!! 👏

It's also important to understand I never put in the wrong adapter to begin with and used awesome troubleshooting skills to find the issue and rectify it!

....I definitely Gregged it a few times getting to that solution though, and probably should have checked what I got sent in error but I did get there.....

It's the Nissan / GM curse, it comes out once in a while to Greg you!

It's the "modified anything" gremlins

One you open anything and release the magic it typically is like walking through a mine field

Strangely it is a walk most, if not all of us here take

But stock is bad, modified is good......

At least Mr Kinkstaar does the modifying himself, the only thing I typically open up is my wallet

You're just as bad, even then. You open up your wallet, get stuff, it won't fit. Get it modded, still doesn't fit. Eventually get it on, interferes with something else. Fast forward 3 months and it broke, revert to previous. 2 months later, repeat with new gubbin or brainfart.

LOL...

I think we are all mentally unstable to some degree (talking about us, the old timers on SAU and yes I would like to use the word autistic or retarded, etc. but it's 2022 and we can't use those words anymore).

@Kinkstaah really Gregged up, he could have just bought a SS or HSV but he wanted to Greg shit up with his R34.
@mlr really Gregged up too, he could have just bought a four door Skyline, but wanted to obtain Skyline performance out of his bogandore

Nah, pitfalls and ... "R&D"  aside.. I am very very happy with what I have, and wouldn't trade the experience of driving it for anything I have ever driven, including HSV/SS's, RB Powered Skylines (of which iterations I've had many) or or a BMW M3 Competition...

It's not hyperbole, I am often plagued by wanting to see what else is out there, is the grass greener etc, but every time I drive something it only reinforces the good thing I have made (or at least, suited to my tastes), It just doesn't exist in any other form. I joke that my car is "basically a corvette" now, but honestly after reading what they do to make them track ready, I'm closer to the end goal with what I currently have than it would be switching to one of those even.

Plus, now it has history.

I actually like my bogan mobile more than my old 33 boat

#stereotypicaloldwhitemale

But then I grew up with Ford and Holden V8's in the 80's, they were all modified and quick for their day, but slow as 10 slow things compared to the Commodore

As you get older they say your mind reverts back to your youth, some of the fun memories from my youth also involve alot drag racing and big skids in a Kingswood Premier with a 308 and 4 speed, I also had a ZD Fairlaine with a 302 and auto, that was slow as, but a wicked cruiser, and you could put 4 surf boards and a couple of duffel bags in the boot and go on a surfing safari.....good times

I also lost the track day bug so don't need a "sporty" car that can go around corners, all it needs to do is cruise around, make cool exhaust and induction noises, and go like a cut snake, in a relatively straight line

I also like playing the modification game, hell, my Harley has aftermarket brakes, suspension, intake, exhaust, seats, wheels and a nice tune, it is wicked fun to punt around

#notgayatall - Out of all the build threads here, this one is my favourite, the development of this car over the years is amazing and shows true dedication to a project/hobbie, through the highs and lows, I wish I had the aptitude, knowledge and time to do the work myself, but I'm sorely lacking in all departments

So, I did a track day. Here's the photos of all the other cool stuff that was there that day.

I totally did some track day tuning with the laptop, which was actually quite beneficial as you can't get better datalogging than actually going down Sandown main straight instead of a dyno 😛

Only thing that 'broke' was the PS fluid got a bit hot due to heavy sustained RPM which is a pretty known issue in pretty much any car ever, I may look into an Astra electric/hydraulic power steering conversion for this purpose, as a PS fluid soaked sock is not really ideal in my engine bay, though it wasn't really even too soaked. Perhaps cool down laps are in order for PS given everything else was fine.

75+ hot laps. Car sounds the same coming out the way it did, but that horrible lifter clacking noise is still present, so I may take it to wiser minds to have the heads pulled off to get it investigated once and for all.

I stupidly deleted my Trackaddict data and I was very slow around the track because my body is not used to G forces, so I only have unedited, un-timed gopro video available. But it has V8 noises and the misfires are from traction control kicking in. Some of the "There's just no grip" was rain and cold/greasy conditions, and part was me being scared.

Anywho, here is aforementioned v8 noises, now with all natural pops and bangs baby. (i.e not tuned for them)

I got off my butt and test fitted the bodykit that has been hanging around awhile.

It will be months before I have enough coin to make that scary and expensive call to a body shop to actually fit it and paint it though. (any recommendations in vic heartily appreciated)

Best way to watch Bathurst for the boganness of it too. The F1 was inside later, so you can all rest easy the car is not a permament living room replacement!

    • Update for the sake of closure   Ended up getting the intercooler piping all sorted, new plugs and yellow jacket coils, and she was idling mint until it warmed up while I was bleeding the cooling system. Found the misfire to be localised to cyl 3 by unplugging coilpacks, ran a compression test, that checked out, then decided to get a mate to check if that spark plug was firing out of the motor. Upon cranking it over, with the injectors disconnected, the car actually fired and ran on a couple cylinders and heaps of fuel came out the top of cyl 3 I'd say that injector's either spraying incorrectly or spraying far too much, which is fine as I'm planning on replacing them anyway I'm planning on making about 250kW on flex fuel, and have a set of 1000cc injectors from ozautosport, obviously overkill but I'm planning on building the motor and running more boost further down the line, do you reckon they'd be too big for a smooth idle on 98? Thanks for the replies gents, much appreciated
    • I'm confused. You said you want to "remove the clear coat from most panels" but it sounds like you are actually doing a full respray? Few random things to add -  If you chase the blistered paint with 120 grit, I can almost guarantee you'll chase it down to bare metal (that's fine). But if you paint the car from here, you'll have nice little indents where ever the blistered paint was. The new paint won't magically level out the low areas, you need to fill them. Which leads me to the main point I wanted to add, make sure the whole car is flat before you paint it. All those areas with blistered paint you sanded out, make sure to fill them and triple check they are flat with a block guide coat. I'd also check the whole car is flat with a large block and guide coat but yeah up to you if you want to go that far.
    • 300hp (225kw) is barely outside the standard turbo's range with a bit of extra boost in it (200ish). If you are going to change the turbo you should aim for 250-300kw (330-400hp) to make the expense worthwhile
    • A couple of things, firstly omg that turbo is expensive! $3,000 USD for dinosaur technology is robbery. You could buy a G series turbo and have a good amount of change instead.  If you want a good budget option, have a look here - https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25dethighflow/ If you are keen to spend more, have look at the modern turbos, Garrett G series, Borgwarner EFR, etc. Have a look at the RB25 dyno results thread for inspiration.  If you upgrade your turbo to something that will support the 300hp you want and only "probably" have Haltech ECU, your car will only "probably" run. Actually, no it won't run. You are going to need the ECU and injectors at the time you do the turbo upgrade.  No thoughts on "this much boost" as you didn't say how much boost that actually is. Having said that, plenty of unopened RB25's making even more power then what you are chasing.
