Good to hear, I was planning on mounting a baton light off the wall to light up engine bays. Maybe even a bracket to angle down a bit.

Hey, Rob, just to clear up the light purchase, I didn't buy them from HN, I bought them on ebay, way cheaper.

I was thinking of buying some led strip lights and mounting them on the link between the hoist's uprights, just an idea in my head at the moment.

Thinking through this, I think you might find light on the uprights annoying to work with as when you're under the car looking up, you're going to potentially have bright light shining into your peripheral making it harder to see up under the car in specific circumstances.

It may be different for others, but I find I can typically see better in my garage if I close my roller door, as the light coming in the door is from a focused point, if that point is partly shining through somewhere I'm trying to look at, I can't see the darker area. IE, looking down through my engine bay, but light is shining from the floor up. I kind of liken what happens to me like when you're trying to take a photo of something dark, but there's a bright light source in the frame as well.

For use when working under the car, it might be better to have lights along the floor, shining upwards from each side so the light is "behind you" at all times, rather than potentially level with.

I've also found in the last year, the head mounted torches and be a real blessing when using a hoist.

Very true Matt, I've tried cable tieing inspection lights to the uprights and the legs, that doesn't work, actually it makes it worse as all you get is blinded eyes.

I stole Melinda's head lamp like you said, but it annoyed me, so when we go into town next, I think I'll go to Jaycar and ask the expert in there, best thing about country towns, you get to talk to the same person all the time.

Cheers for the advice Matt

Neil.

So, here's an update, this summer has been way worse than the last few and things are heating up. I get sun on the roller doors for all of the morning till about 1pm. I can open the doors but basically the heat sits in the roof cavity and has nowhere to go, remembering I have pool noodles blocking any escape. The air cond is tragic, it's too small and can't keep up. So after talking to my awesome back neibour over lots of beers he tells me he has 2 spare whirly fans he doesn't need and he's after another 30m hose reel which I have and these conversations were hours apart, so after 4 hours of drinking we decided to swap. Now I have to get up the courage to go up the big ladder and install them in the heat, hope I don't fall, wish me luck, this frightens me.

Be careful up there Molly! (surely not too soon).

In any case, I'm not convinced those wind driven ones do much, I guess it is worth the try. I've got Mark's awesome solar ones in the garage (not the shed sadly) but they aren't available any more and I think most current ones are junk too

I bet we get a full review by mid next summer on how well they work, and if the shit job of getting on the roof is worth it!

I'm quite intrigued on if they will do anything, I've never really looked into it.

That said Neil, for you sun issue, I have seen some super promising stuff on a paint you can make up, and your surface temps end up BELOW ambient air temp! Some really funky physics going on in it!

Lastly, while you're on your ladder, can swap the tubes in my lights in the garage, and plug the third bay in for me? I hate ladders just as much as you do! So far... I'm still working with less than ideal light :P

I was of the same thinking as you, 2 problems poped up though, the best warranty I could find was 2 years and none have any battery charging/backup, so they stop when the sun goes down. Not going to cut holes in the roof for shitty solar. I have been checking out the normal ones and with no wind to turn them, the hot air rising keeps them spinning, so I'm going with them.

Yea buddy time will tell, my god the roof gets hot!!!. Thinking it will be an early morning exercise.

There is no way in the world I'm going to sit up there on the roof and paint it, you're crazy.

I didn't even mount the power points in the ceiling, so let's stick with no.
