Should have bought Reese's from skid control, a quick buff and polish and I'm sure the charring marks would come out :P (I heard it was stolen and lit ablaze :( )

A few updates in the race car

New radiator is in, required a few small mods to the shroud but all sorted and holds pressure

held in by rivnuts and some aluminium angle

also swapped to a lighter battery from the old getz. A few less kg and lower weight.

Just need to check tyre pressures and good to go for a test day Friday before Morgan Park next week.

Car testing went well Friday, only did a handful of laps but stays cool and brakes work.
Doing some tuning too with boost control and sorting a few areas of fuel map. That confident I haven't even unloaded it,  straight into the shed on the trailer still. Bring on Morgan Park Wednesday

I was trying to get the bossman to take our work Veloster out to MP on Wednesday. I think he was keen, only if I was already taking a car too, but none of mine to go out there :(

I did then try to get him to the Skid control QR AutoCross sprint on Thursday with the whole "No race car? Bring the work car!" I'll remind him I need the company Veloster :P

are you doing the Skid Control QR AutoCross on Thursday night too?

So..........

Morgan Park was a fail on the brakes. One fast lap and still shudder.
Had another booster from a s14 here so put it on and straight away with a quick blocky was so much better.
Now I have a good work area again I spent the time to go right through the car, bolt check and marking everything. Found a notchy front wheel bearing so replaced it. Full fluid check too. Felt better after doing this as hadn't been done since January.

With all this done next opportunity I had to drive was at Lakesides All Asian Day with 2 sprint sessions.
Was a bit cautious on the warm up and first fast lap, felt good so sent it. Did a 59.07 then back to back 59.0's second session. Brakes felt great but took an extra lap to come up to temp.
Was fastest car there by a considerable amount and shocked a few by how simple the car is.
My mate with his mazda 2 was doing 68's making some fast cars look silly in the corners.

All this was prep for Time Attack round 3 at Queensland Raceway.
Was a cold morning and track took a while to warm up. Used the first session as warmup. The next 2 sessions went and ran 59.0's on clubman layout so was pretty happy as been chasing that for a while, there were mistakes on all laps but got a solid base to work from now. Car was great all day with only a small bit of oil from one of the side diff seals.

Made a video

Thats it for now, give it a wash ready for next event on the 22 June.

Next Time Attack event just checked fluids, tyre pressures and added a few litres of fuel.
Nice cool morning and right amount of sun had a heap of people setting PB's. I set a new PB on QR Clubman layout 58.68 which was awesome but had a few issues so normal track day. Had clamps coming loose off intercooler pipes and ended up blowing a decent whole in a silicone.

I had a new silicone in the shed but also ordered a heap of constant tension clamps and got it all swapped.

King of QR 2023
Great event and did really well, class was stacked with 3 new Supra's with great drivers and a WTAC Hyundai.
Car performed great and turned it upto around 20psi which definitely made it move.
Ended up finishing 2nd in class around 1.2 seconds behind 1st and 0.052 ahead of 3rd. Which is crazy after all 4 different layouts of QR

National 1:19.442
Clubman 58.932
Sprint 56.229
Sportsman 56.618

on board for national layout

Car needs a good going over will change all fluids and potentially need to pull the gearbox to inspect clutch and replace the 5th/reverse selector fork. For a 30 year old car it performed so well against $100+K new cars.

Got Morgan Park time attack mid next month which is an amazing track and should suit the 180sx well.

Went out to Morgan Park yesterday for the next round of the Time Attack Super Series.
A bit of a slow start in the morning in first session with traffic and getting everything up to temp.
Second session with no traffic went a bit quicker and set a new pb on e track with a 1:07.91 which placed me third outright. Next session decided to turn boost up but went a little bit slower with carrying a bit of extra speed so stuffed up 2 braking points.
After that noticed a bit of oil from between engine and gearbox and a exhaust nut from the down pipe on the ground. Cleaned the oil up and sprayed a heap of brake clean in bell housing but not much came out, put nut back on and waited for the afternoon e track sessions.
Didn't go any quicker but everyone was .2-.3 slower so cooled it down and missed a K track session to have a go later.
At this point tyres were fair gone and weather had a been a bit patchy with a few drops so took it easy first time out and did a 1:25.9 with traffic so jumped further up the start line next time and  had a 2 back to back 1:24 laps last being a 1:24.57 which placed me 2nd for the that layout. Bloody stoked with that result.

Car all day was down on power and a quick look at gauge was around 12psi at 6000rpm so don't know whats going on there and will definitely investigate and hopefully have time to pull the gearbox before the next round as oil drops are getting bigger.

A quick video on board for K Track layout

Found reason down on power....... split silicone off turbo again. Looking back through the data it split at King of qr 3rd session of the day 😅

Have a cast elbow and billet clamp to fit now. While replacing the gearbox seal and diff seal, inspected tailshaft and all the uni's were stuffed and very worn tailshaft yoke so it's being rebuilt with new uni's, centre bearing and yoke.

Waa going to pull motor and gearbox to try and find where oil was coming from. Took off the exhaust manifold heat shield and found a catch can breather/drain hose pretty much off so that where oil was coming from.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a lot of issues with silicon elbows many years ago and ended up being an engine mount issue causing it to tear! I've never run one off the turbo since as alloy elbow is the way to go!

Good luck with the tailshaft lol... I think mine should be sorted now, won't get to test back at SMSP until later in the year but will do it before Round 6 so I don't have another poor result!

Finally got a chance to go through the build and watch the videos! Awesome stuff... Morgan Park looks like fun, will see if I can get up there later this year but depends on how the rest of the events go for now!

Keep the updates coming!

Bloody tailshaft curse struck.....

7-8mm too long and new yoke jammed against dust cover. They are fixing it today.

Thanks for watching, Morgan Park is amazing and worth the trip up.

Hoping to have a decent up date either Sat/Sun.

First time anyone has ever complained about their shaft being too long :P

Hopefully its an easy fix. Did you go to a single or stay 2pc OEM style? I'll be keeping a close eye on how others go with their drivelines after my ordeal. I'm not 100% sure it was the shaft alone that caused my issue, however I feel way better knowing the 2pc is in now and a lot less load on the back of the gearbox especially at high RPM! Just moving around the driveway seems smoother so far.

Will get to Morgan Park over the next 12mths for sure, if we miss the November event I'll make an effort to get some guys together and catch up there at a social day. Jim Berry said he would tag along for the day which would be good!

Car is all ready for Thursday QR Time Attack round 4

So I had a few little things to sort and thought I'll pull the engine. Start removing bits and found the hose from block to catch can just hanging there, it sits under the heat shield so can't see it. First win.

Pull the tailshaft to replace gearbox rear seal and pull the diff to replace side seal. With that done thought i'll have a good look at the tail shaft. The yoke was very pitted and a decent wear mark, Uni's were all notchy. Tried finding some uni's from a bearing shop but at $400+ and they are staked to need a certain type of uni joint.  I thought a shop should be able to get it sorted for around little bit more so rang around for a price to get uni's but since non replaceble and need to "see it" all were around $1200 and one place wanted to build a one piece, no thank you. Found a shop that was happy to do it, new yoke, centre bearing and the 3 uni's, $900 awesome. Got it back and went to fit it........... yep 7mm to long and was fowling the gearbox dust cover so went back and they sorted it pretty quick with no fuss.

Next up was the cast elbow. My brother had a sleeve made up as housing was 2.25 and elbow 2.5. Slipped it on and welded it, got the elbow slipped over and welded then the billet clamp. Turbo had to come off ad no studs came out so another win. Fitted turbo back up, measured up the cold pipe and cut what needed to be removed for the other side of the billet clamp. With 3 Tacks done went to do a 4th and blew a hole in the pipe......... Called it quits for the day at that point.

With a day off from it and a hurry up email from event organiser got back into today.

Cleaned up the blowout, cleaned everything, drop down to a 1.6mm tungsten and 6 cup finished up welding the cold pipe, Turned out ok. Its sealed and functional.
20230911_112336.thumb.jpg.cdee7d76f08583bfbb7a6775cee9519e.jpg

started the car up to rebleed coolant and warm up ready for an oil change. Dropped oil and all looks good but the smallest amount of bearing material. I cut filter apart and nothing in it bar a small amount in bottom of housing. Guessing this is normal for what this engine is doing.
Dropped gear box oil and well I found why having trouble shifting. So much syncro material so did the right thing and put in new GL4 oil and ignored that. Only got 3 rounds left for the year so maybe 15-18 proper laps.
20230911_142536.thumb.jpg.a2292a4b557edb95f4065ae42bd84f24.jpg
Diff oil looked good and replaced it with no issues.
also made a drain hose up for the catch can so don't have to take it out to drain. Had plenty of spare fittings so its tucked nicely against the chassis rail.

All that is left to do is a quick wash, top off fuel and load up.

Also started mocking up where I want the hoist to go, need to mod the cross beam to make it work but a mate is coming to install it early October so no more working on the ground soon.
