Hey all,

Here’s the thing. I bought my skyline way back in late 2014 and I have never clay barred it, polished it or waxed it to this day(2021). I would rate the paint a good 7.5-8/10. Water still beads on it (I never asked but I’m almost certain the previous owner had it clayed polished and put on a good quality ceramic coating wax). But recently a month ago I put Bowdens Afterglow on it. And the water beads a bit better now (see picture). I was wondering if this is a bad move on my part. I’m worried I compromised my ceramic coating wax. Can anyone give me any input on this?

Thanks

If its been 6 years since the ceramic was applied and the car has been driven regularly, its all gone by now. Probably time to re-do it.

Proper coatings wont be removed if you put other products over the top, but you will probably waste the products as they wont stick to the ceramic. Best to use a specific cermaic booster spray

The thread topic says "sealant over wax", but the real question is really about "wax over sealant", yes?

In which case, as junkie says, yes, 6 years is long enough to need to redo a ceramic sealant.

No, there is no problem putting wax on top of a ceramic. Probably not necessary, but nothing wrong with it. Wax is always a good thing.

No, you could not put ceramic sealant over wax. The paint has to be bare. There are specific wax removal steps before most sealant application.

Isn’t the ceramic coating a wax and afterglow I applied a sealant, not the other way around? My bad lmao

No. Proper wax is made from carnuba palm leaves. It is an organic wax. There are synthetic waxes, but genuine carnuba wax is superior to a lot of the the synthetic ones.

Ceramic coats are..... well, they're ceramic. It's somewhat in the name. But to a certain extent that really depends on what product you're talking about. Pro grade coatings used by paint specialists are a hard ceramic glaze. The consumer level products a that come in a spray bottle can be almost anything, and some of them are probably a hybrid between a true ceramic glaze and a wax. Ease of application and requirement for repeated use (which is a high value for consumer product!) are defining characteristics of consumer grade stuff.

Sealants always go direct onto paint. Wax always goes on top. You cannot hope to make anything stick over the top of wax. Rejecting contamination from outside is what wax is all about.

    • Hi everyone, I’m Dave from Canberra. Here's a few pics of my 1992 R32 GTST coupe which I imported back in 2006. Only mods so far are HKS Hi-power cat back exhaust, K&N filter, ATC Volanti steering wheel, Pioneer stereo, amp and sub. This was my daily driver up until 2015 and sadly hasn’t been driven at all in the last 5 years due to marriage, work, and kids taking up most of my time and spare cash.As such its in need of a bit of TLC and one of my goals for this year is to get it back to running condition and maybe look into club/historic rego. I’ve joined SAU so I can ask a few questions along the way (although I promise to google Current Problem +SAU beforehand!)
    • From talking to the mx5 guys the NC doesn't actually need bonnet vents like the earlier NA and NB models, due to a better designed cooling system and undertray design There's plenty of them used as street cars and weekend track toys running anywhere from around 170 to 250kw with stock non vented bonnets, I initially was going to get some bonnet vents, but, as they are not actually required, I'll put vents on hold for a while and just monitor temps, though I do need to get something to actually monitor engine oil temps though, coolant temp can be pulled from the OBD2, but the oil gauge in the car is not actual oil temp, it is only a calculation based off coolant temp and RPM ☹️ They do recommend upgrading the radiator, which I have already done with a triple pass, and the only other thing they recommend for a street car is heat management, like I talked about above to protect bits in the engine bay from radiant heat, and to either replace the nearly 20 year old plastic coolant expansion tank, which I have done, or get a aftermarket alloy jobbie for some bling They did also say that if I wanted to track the car on occasion a oil cooler and sump baffle would be required, and as I already have had a sump baffle installed when the engine was out......... I'm going to get a oil cooler with a thermostat....... just in case I do eventually track the car, but probably not, but still maybe...🤪
