I get wanting to keep the rb if you can, and I don't have any experience with how(if?) rb25de can make 220hp n/a. I assume it is possible with the right intake, exhaust and cams but of course pretty much no-one needs to get power out of these without a turbo so there won't be much experience around. the 25DE NEO head is the best of the range for breathing so it can support the flow you are looking for easily

On the other hand, it can absolutely be reliable at that power level, they are designed for at least 50% more power in stock form so everything will is safely oversized like rods, bearings, oil flow etc etc. For oil pump I would still use a large aftermarket one like nitto on an extended crank collar for safety, and you will still need a large oversize sump.

Depending on freedoms, you could look into the premade (or custom) adaptors to fit the 6 throttle bodies and plenum from rb26 to the 25 head which might help with throttle response unless the plenum is too large for 220hp

Clearly downsides are it is heavy and long compared to more modern alloy v6 or I4 which is not good for corner weights, and no doubt those annoying k-series motors are more readily available there

Well. This is quite a bit overdue for an update lol.. 

Recently been finishing up my engineering degree and working out new jobs.. taking most of my time. In some free time I've been working with that race team with the e46 (shown in my first post in this thread). In my spare time I've been picking away at the r32.. Car is still with me and is now getting a vq35hr (let me explain before incoming hate). Very robust engine especially at stock power levels, parts available everywhere here over in the U.S/Canada unlike an rb, lighter, center of mass further back and lower, less complexities compared to a turbo engine, etc etc. The power levels this engine puts out are exactly where I need to be classing wise with weight/power ratios. I've completely stripped the chassis harness and have been building a nice (dtm connectors, tefzel wire, dr-25,etc) chassis harness for the simples. I'm going to be using a stock 350z ecu/ecm paired with an aim dash for now until the rest of the car is sorted. Have got the engine in the bay and pretty much mounted up with some brackets we have made. Lots of things on order (cooling, driveshaft, diff, etc etc). It's coming along pretty well so far, not sure how many vq r32's exist in the world. Got the inspiration from a local racer with a vq37vhr in an s14 who wins lots of races.

There's more than a few here in Oz with VQ30DET. Many in WA, as there was a shop over here that specialised in the swap. The Skid Factory (Youtube) have a series on an R32 with one in it.

Using the stock ECU might be a recipe for tears. Be prepared for it to fight you. You might be far better off jumping straight to an aftermarket ECU.

I was looking at that as I will be fighting some canbus protocol, but from talking to some others I think I will be able to work it out. If I can’t get this to work I’m starting with Bosch here in a couple months and hoping for some serious company discounts possibly on ecm items where I will be working, if not I’ll probably go with an ecumasters.

    • I dunno man, that VX S with 200,000 k's is still hanging out for 1.5 I reckon the R34 is the better buy, personally.

    • Only in a market where OBD was a thing. The rest of the world was quite happy to let the US EPA only affect US cars for quite a while. The* problem with datalogs is that unless you are very familiar with what every trace should look like, on their own and as an ensemble, you can and will see weird shit that can and will lead you astray, not realising that what you are seeing is the normal consequence of various transient inputs. *Really, "a" problem, as there are of course many other problems too. Look, these cars are so bloody simple that if it is missing or stumbling, the obvious thing is to break out the old mental diagnostic list and just go do all the things that you know you should. After proving that the plugs are clean and sound, ditto the coil stalks, coils, loom connectors, etc, and then making sure that there is fuel pressure at about the right numbers (while driving!, not while sitting in the garage free blipping it), then maybe you go looking at AFM voltages, manually testing the igniter, putting a scope on the CAS, etc. Then you're into pulling the injectors for a spray pattern look-see and perhaps a clean, squirting carby cleaner around the inlet manifold looking for leaks, and all the more annoying and esoteric, but still common as muck faults that these things have. I wouldn't ever bother looking at the trims, as they are usually bullshit on these old clunkers anyway.
