ighty so my distributor shat the bed the other day and considering that the last owner had already done some work to the dizzy, I thought its not a bad idea to upgrade to a new system.  ive done a good amount of research across the web/forums on different ignition system that can be used but I've still got a lot of questions left unanswered.

Can the coil packs that suit an RB20det or RB26det/25 or NEO"s fit into the rb30 N/A, because i was thinking about running spitfire coil packs "DIS 008 or DIS 001" (not sure if theirs room for them under the intake manifold or if theirs a reason they cant be run on non turbos idk sounds stupid),

What wasted spark systems can i fit up to my dirty 31, and do i need to set up a new ECU to run it (im running stock ECU)

Finally i'm doing this to increase reliability, to get better efficiency at high rev and maybe a little bit of fuel economy, but is it worth converting ignition systems, i.e. can i achieve these same traits from an after market distributor and some tampering here and there.... also its safe to say different ignition systems are illegal on p plates?

yeah any help or comments of this will be f**king legendarily helpful

You’ll need an aftermarket ecu to do any of what you asked about.

platinum racing products makes a crank trigger setup for the single cam rb30 engine.

LS coils would br a good choice as they’re cheap and plentiful, then run leads from them to the spark plugs

increase reliability,

Hmm, your car is approx 30 years old. Just put a recond distributor in and move on. It wil last 15 Years easily.

Spending money on an ecu and tune {3 grand) to get rid of a distributor isn't smart

Plenty of quick rb30s still using a distributor, and no way will rb25 spitfires fit mate, should be fairly obvious comparing the 2 heads.

yeah i thought an ECU would be a must thanks for confirming that though. and thanks for your suggestion ill do some more research on the price that set up will be, as it cant be pushing far past the 1k mark or it'll have to be saved for another day.

It’s going to way past the 1k mark, the ecu alone will be double that

yeah i definitely under estimated the costs and work of getting an ecu, for some reason i thought i could get the ECU done at around 700ish

You might be able to pull this off if you get lucky finding a 2nd hand ECU. Maybe someone wants to get rid of an old haltech platinum ECU, I can imagine that might be sold for around the $700 mark.

yeah shit i know i got a lot to learn but i didnt see it getting up to 3k.

yeah my original plan was to do that (recondition the dizzy myself) by just sourcing out and replacing all the parts of the dizzy to end up with 1 nearly fresh one, ill probably just go with that.........unless you know anyone who sells already made up reconditioned distributors?

As a general rule it's usually almost always cheaper to just rebuild what you have or source a new OEM part. Rare exception is some GTR parts where an ignitor alone is 600 USD and Nissan Japan wants like 140 USD for a coilpack.

very interesting, but sounds like a fair bit of waiting and i dont really want my car off the road for that long, its still my daily.

Have heard of an Rb20 loom and ecu with nistune being modified to work on a rb30 would be the most economical way to go.

cheers man ill keep this in mind because a nistune ECU is definitely coming in the future, cheers man

    • Thanks for that Paul.  Do you think if I posted a picture you'd be able to remember where it went?
    • Sorry Duncan, I didn't get a notification for the replies.  Thanks for responding!  It's a full Android device, but does allow you to use CarPlay/AA as well.  This is the one I bought from NaviRS on AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006368602668.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.111.59aa1802JDzQ0E - the 2K 8G-256G CAM variant but it seems to have gone up by £170 since I bought it!  My purchase was £307.14.   It's not the fastest thing in the world but performs perfectly adequately.  It stays on standby unless I disconnect the battery and let it power down, then it's just a fairly standard Android bootup time from cold.  The DSP Equaliser is very nice and made the standard stereo system sound pretty decent compared to the stock screen.  Perhaps I can take a video of it when I get a sec. It *allegedly* supports the reverse camera, but I'm yet to get that working.  It has options for reverse cam (a camera unit can be bought separately) or 360 cameras (also bought separately).  To be fair it doesn't seem to detect that the shifter was put into reverse but I'm working on a theory about this as well.  At the moment I'm going without which is a bit annoying considering the car is an absolute canal barge but so far I haven't caused any damage I'll grab a picture of the wire I'm missing later today when I can get outside.  My theory, by the by, is that not only is the head unit different, but the CANBUS network has different signals for the different years.  I think this because I have a spare AC panel from a newer Infiniti G37 (as opposed to my Nissan panel) which wouldn't control anything except the volume when I had it wired up with the stock system.  I'm going to throw it back in and see if the screen will respond to it.  I've just ordered an arduino CANBUS module so I can have a look at the signals going around the car and see if I can spot anything.  I'm thinking if I can work out what it's expecting vs what it's getting I might be able to translate and relay the signal back but so far just a theory anyway. I also found this on my travels, so far the only one that specifically matches my car: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002822934280.html?spm=a2g0s.imconversation.0.0.33433e5fgttovi If you look at the picture of the before, it has the card reader slot, and the picture of the head unit is exactly the same as the one pictured in my original post.  I asked if they sell the cables separately but sadly they won't.  I didn't want to just buy this one because it's a super old Android version and only dual core - likely slow as hell.
    • As above, you did refill the coolant and burp the system before running it again didn't you?
    • To be fair - you see the same thing for every clutch. There's always someone making an installation error.
    • Just saw this, redacted names. It's on a R33 GTS-t Facebook group. Looks like still teething issues.
