Hey guys, i've never owned a skyline before and was just wondering how much you think is a decent figure to purchase an R32 GTST, which year is best, what to look out for with these cars etc.

I'm a little scared of purchasing a skyline due to all the bad stories ive heard with people selling and buying lemons :)

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,

Evan

I'm still trying to figure out how much a good price is.

Mostly in aus i think people ask anything from $14k-20k

Import wise you could probably get away cheaper but you'd be pushing it in terms of quality any less than 11k.

There is an article what to look out for for buying skylines on this forum if you search around.

Ehm - there *are* plenty of thrashed ones around there. I don't know exactly how you'd know if it's good or not.. Get it checked by your mechanic.

Personally I'm looking for a 1989 to import because it means it doesn't have to be stock and there are a couple of other advantages. My flatmate has a 1993 r32 that came in before the new compliance scheme he got it for $17k with a muffler and aftermarket rimms (pretty much stocker).

Other than that - checkout as many as you can and don't buy the first 25. Then you'll probably know what to look for - and then read up here especially in the for sale and see what other people ask.

My finding is the majority of people on this forum are extremely helpful and knowledgable so it helps to read their stuff.

Good luck.

just buy a stock 1989 before it ends for about $8k onroad.. then spend another $5k on respray, and $5k on engine (replace if necessary) and mods and it will be better than anything here for $18k :) or buy one with a few mods and have a bit of extra cash to replace the engine if necessary (rb20det are cheap engines). Most things from a later r32 can be swapped over if necessary for only a few $k at most (door trims, seats, etc)

if you ask me, all the local r32 are very much overpriced and at the moment seem to be going for $15k for ones with a few mods, considering some fairly stock R33 can be had for only $1-2k more or something like that. You really have to want an r32 over an r33 to pay the extra, and the rb25det is more driveable stock.

If you want a 4 door , or would go for a 4 door, this is something different at an excellent price IMHO: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/sh...ead.php?t=43192. Impuls R32 are rare, and this is good condition.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys.

Now, i have read the thread on what to look for with Skylines when going to inspect/drive them.

Just to go into further detail, what is "normal oil pressure" ie. what number should the gauge be sitting on when you are looking at it, at cold start, then normal operating temp etc.

What "strange" noises should i be listening for? What noises are normal?

How should the gearbox and clutch feel when driving?

ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.

If i took it down to my local mechanic what specifics should i be asking him to look at.

Im sorry if im overdoing it with questions, but ive been to told to be very careful with turbos and to get them checked out PROPERLY and THOROUGHLY. I don't want to be buying a lemon.

By the way i am also considering an R33, but my preference is for a 32.

Cheers for the replies

Evan

  • 1 month later...

Just to let you know Evan

im in sydney, i bought my R32line gtst 3 months ago for $14,000. guy was asking 15k. Never settle for the asking price.

1992 model

type M r32 gtst

had 97,000k's on clock

From looking at the condition of the car i would say these are legit k's also the dude i brought it off imported it him self and had the car for 3 years. didnt have any mods besides exhaust.

I found that there are more r32 gtst in melb for sale and are cheaper. well thats from my research. Took me 2 months to find this car and i havent had problem since *knock wood* Dont rush into it and dont buy the first car you see.

also other info, car came with 12months rego. got quoted 2200$ for full insurance from classic. which i think is dirt cheap insurance for this type of vehicle and also me being 22 years old... :)
