How to remove rust?

I’d like to remove the rust from the boot lid. Any suggestions on what to use to get these rust free?

Phosphoric works but can be harsh, safer option use cleaning vinegar available from Bunnings at $3/2litres.

I've seen people with success using Simple Green cleaner and a light abrasive like steel wool or scotch brite pad

And that is correct. In a past job I used to sell container loads of food grade Phosphoric Acid to Amatil (Coca-Cola) at French's Forest for the coke.
