I have a 1989 R32 GTR, with mainly stock HP and stock engine with stock 5 speed manual. My AWD is not working atm so its only RWD. I have a short throw shifter, but the transmission gets extremely hot. I did some reading and found that this is "normal". I'm just wondering, there is no way that these cars came from the factory and it was normal for the transmission to get really hot and transfer the heat to the gear shifter, to the center console trim panels and radiate heat on my legs...

Pretty sure it is "normal". Not shoe meltingly warm but there is a noticeable warmth from the transmission and exhaust, particularly on the passenger side in these cars. Our stagea is the same

On long runs on hot days, without internal sound deadener, it has been shoe meltingly hot in the race car on the nav side

Between the big exhaust and gearbox the trans tunnel in my car gets very warm, nice on  winters day but not so much in summer.

I lined the trans tunnel with stick on reflective heat shield, mostly at the top with a bit down each side.

Huge improvement !

I know this doesn't fix your "hot box" problem but if you consider the temp normal, it fixes your experience.

This is in my Cefiro but its the same trans tunnel as a 32R.

I have found the embosed aluminium sheet works great

The trick with thermal protection is to use a air gap between the heat source, the sheilding and body

Without a air gap alot of heat will still transfer across

Fabricating this stuff is childs play, just start with templates, measure once.....pay twice.....or something like that

Carbuilders brand in pretty good, but, the stuff supercheap sell is basically the same so shop around

Would you be so kind as to shoot these surfaces with an infra-red pyrometer so we can understand how hot hot is?

Good idea, i will get a infrared thermometer and let you know. All i know is that it is hot to the touch, like uncomftorably hot. I have a garage door opener that i put in the cigarette ash tray and when i go open the garage with it, it was like it was boiling in hot water

I had the carpet out of the footwell in the stagea yesterday, some aftermarket wires ran across the passenger floor and they had melted into the sound deadener/tar over the years....
