Buying some parts online from RHDJapan

The amounts total to over 1k

Would I be charged taxes when they come in? I can split my order into 2 sub 1k orders for same price if that avoids taxes

Or does the DHL shipping cost account for taxes?

If anyone has bought from overseas pls

Umm that's probably just how tax works (you didn't mention value of what you are importing...), but GST and the broker's fee add up

I recently imported some expensive bits from US, value A$1,062.43 and paid import costs:

GST is 10% obviously, car parts from US were duty free (other than GST) and Other was the broker's %. Direct shipping cost was included in the cost base $1,062.43, not just the parts

Might be worth doing some more research on this. Looks to me like it might be worth splitting it if you can without getting shafted by shipping costs.

Importing goods internationally of a value less than $1000 AUD?

For goods with a value of AUD$1,000 or less that are imported, there is typically no requirement to pay import duties or taxes. However, this rule does not apply to alcohol or tobacco imports.

Importing goods internationally of a value over $1000 AUD?

For goods exceeding the value of AUD$1,000, it is necessary to submit an Import Declaration for your shipment. This process incurs a processing charge, and in addition, you will be obligated to pay duties and taxes.

FWIW, I ordered a clutch + slave cylinder from rhdjapan a while ago. Was AU$1,950.49 all up and I had to pay AU$404.36 on top of that in import duty. I'm not entirely sure how it arrived at that value because it was just a payment prompt from DHL. My guess in hindsight is that what DHL charged as import duty may have been 10% GST + import duty + import processing charges. It gets it somewhat close to this. Not sure ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Import processing charges are listed in the link below. It also mentions the $1,000 as the cut off value.

Looking at buying these dixcel rotors in which total value is about 1300

I can divide the purchase into sending both separately and it will be same price

If I can avoid charged that way

Thanks for the info did you get hit with 404 at time of order or once item arrived in AU?

I'm buying dixcel rotors and the price of buying front and rear separate is the same cost as shipping gets doubled.

So might be worth buying separate as that'll be sub 1k and I can avoid costs (I hope)

From emails looks like it was next day after they shipped it in Japan. Prompted by DHL. As a counter point I also made a A$1,296.51 order from Nengun and I don't think I was charged anything extra.

So, really, I have no idea how the system works. Probably better to not go by my advice :)

AFAIK this is how it works. Since the 2018 changes to GST on low value imports. Some companies will pre-emptively collect 10% GST from your order. if your package gets stopped at customs then they will pay for it. if it doesn't then your guess is good as mine.

    • I think you're really missing the point. The spec is just the minimum spec that the fuel has to meet. The additive packages can, and do, go above that minimum if the fuel brand feels they need/want to. And so you get BP Ultimate or Shell Ultra (or whatever they call it) making promises to clean your engine better than the standard stuff....simply because they do actually put better additive packages in there. They do not waste special sauce on the plebian fuel if they can avoid it. I didn't say "energy density". I just said "density". That's right, the specific gravity (if you want to use a really shit old imperial description for mass per unit volume). The density being higher indicates a number of things, from reduces oxygen content, to increased numbers of double bonds or cyclic components. That then just happens to flow on to the calorific value on a volume basis being correspondingly higher. The calorific value on a mass basis barely changes, because almost all hydrocarbon materials have a very similar CV per kg. But whatever - the end result is that you do get a bit more energy per litre, which helps to offset some of the sting of the massive price bump over 91. I can go you one better than "I used to work at a fuel station". I had uni lecturers who worked at the Pt Stanvac refinery (at the time they were lecturing, as industry specialist lecturers) who were quite candid about the business. And granted, that was 30+ years ago, and you might note that I have stated above that I think the industry has since collected together near the bottom (quite like ISPs, when you think about it). Oh, did I mention that I am quite literally a combustion engineer? I'm designing (well, actually, trying to avoid designing and trying to make the junior engineer do it) a heavy fuel oil firing system for a cement plant in fricking Iraq, this week. Last week it was natural gas fired this-that. The week before it was LPG fired anode furnaces for a copper smelter (well, the burners for them, not the actual furnaces, which are just big dumb steel). I'm kinda all over fuels.
    • Well my freshly rebuilt RB25DET Neo went bang 1000kms in, completely fried big end bearing in cylinder 1 so bad my engine seized. No knocking or oil pressure issue prior to this happening, all happened within less than a second. Had Nitto oil pump, 8L baffled sump, head drain, oil restrictors, the lot put in to prevent me spinning a bearing like i did to need the rebuild. Mechanic that looked after the works has no idea what caused it. Reckoned it may have been bearing clearance wrong in cylinder 1 we have no idea. Machinist who did the work reckoned it was something on the mechanic. Anyway thats between them, i had no part in it, just paid the money Curiosity question, does the oil system on RB’s go sump > oil pump > filter > around engine? If so, if you had a leak on an oil filter relocation plate, say sump > oil pump > filter > LEAK > around engine would this cause a low oil pressure reading if the sensors was before the filter?   TIA
