Rust on the wheel wells - should i be concerned?

Recommended Posts

Was doing brakes and noticed the coating was peeling on the wheel wells. I started peeling some off and found this rust. This is my first project car and not sure how to tackle this and if i should be really concerned. Anyone have experience with this? IMG_5573.thumb.JPG.1452fd1003a0899a13d3ebf082385143.JPGIMG_5574.thumb.JPG.f09c9ec5beee31561bba2bfe864ad2a2.JPGIMG_5575.thumb.JPG.bfddd6c9819d117b699358525644e43a.JPG

Remove old coating, wire wheel affected areas and treat with product, prep and reseal with your choice of product.

Depends how deep the rust goes  may need to do some patch panels.

Had similar on one of my cars and did the above, used a underbody coating after treating and repairing sections.

Yes, you should be concerned. How concerned? Don't know. Poke a screwdriver and see how deep the rust goes. If it makes a hole you need to weld in new metal.

1. When and where do i stop peeling back the current coating? Do i remove an entire section? because the wheel well is connected to the underbody and the coating spans the entire bottom side of the car.

2. After i clean the rust area with wire-wheel, how do i prep and reseal the surface? Since the current coating peels in irregular shapes, would i just spray over the existing coating to blend it in? (Not sure if that makes sense. For example, if I'm painting a house, each room is sectioned off so its easy to tell where and when to stop. But in this car, the wheel well, is part of the frame and goes to the underside)

1. When you stop exposing rust, and not before.

2. Any texture left on existing coatings with abrasives will provide a key for the primer (proper primer goes on bare metal first).

What do you mean a key?

Update: I started peeling all the undercoating and this stuff was really tough to remove when it was bonded properly with the metal.. The initial top coating (rubber) came off easy, but there was this primer layer, sort of vanilla colored stuff that was extremely stuck on to the bare metal.

This is what it looks like halfway removed. You can see the silver bare metal, then the vanilla colored primer, then the black rubber undercoating. IMG_0169.thumb.jpg.0a6e4399221c777946228a7859bc5300.jpg

This is what it looks like when i was done. This took A LOT of elbow grease. Ill upload pictures tomorrow of it painted. I used this stuff from Eastwood called Rust Encapsulater plus.

    • Guess I should be hunting down one of these big ol ford units then for max flow ....  I've had fresh gas in mine and it was never as cold as it is now . The compressor could have been trash though, like I said I am one example with a bunch of unknowns.
    • I don't know if anyone was seriously suggesting a retrofit of an Echo compressor in place of a more-or-less working original comp. You'd have to change the hoses at the bare minimum to do so, and that will definitely add significant cost. I had to get my hoses modded when I did the engine transplant and chose to use the Neo's AC over the even older R32 comp. That was startlingly more expensive than expected for what looks like a simple welding job, and a massive pain in the arse when it turned to have a pinhole leak in the weld too. The Frenchie's kit is for people who have next to nothing of the original system or have more than that but some of it is a bit shit and better off thrown away than salvaged. If you've got 90% of the system, you just patch it up. Mine is currently degassed because it apparently has a big leak somewhere. If I find it is the compressor, I will be looking to take my spare comp to a shop to assess and/or recondition, rather than contemplating a retrofit to anything off-brand.
    • I went and got the aircon regassed in the Stagea today and asked the guy about the upgrade to the Toyota Echo compressor. He was saying it is likely not going to be as good. It is newer but smaller and not going to pump as strongly. And it would be better to try and get a new OEM compressor. He was saying that the improvements people are seeing may be more likely due to regassing the system. I thought it was interesting to hear. Going by the sticker the system in my car was last checked in 2015. Gas was at 50% which is apparently beyond terrible. Under 80% is where efficiency already falls apart. Anyways, with fresh gas the AC is now bloody freezing. I think it may be working a bit less hard as well. I need to drive it a bit more to try it properly. Previously on hill starts it would utterly bog down the car. I'm hoping this is a bit better now. The frenchies kit looks great, but $1400 for the compressor upgrade alone makes it a bit of commitment. Very much so compared to a $150 regas.
    • Yeah, this shit is the reason dry ice blasting was invented.
    • Sweet thanks mate, I did wonder if its easier to try and find a R33 knuckle and make that fit, is it just a case of changing the lower ball joint? I'm getting drive wheel speed off the gearbox speed sensor which is fine so far to 230kph
