I have recently installed a FMIC and since doing so my standard ecu has been maxed out. I get boost cut(?) at about 4500-6000rpm in every gear. I was wondering what i should go for. I know the powerfc is obviously better, but i probably wont do much more to my car. I was only aiming for about 200rwkw and i doubt i will ever change the turbo. I just want to run the stock at about 12psi.

Will the SAFCII solve my current problems? If anything else was to be upgraded it would probably just be a fuel pump or something small so it's not like i have big plans for the car. Just want a nice cruiser.

anyway so far i've only got a 3" exhaust, FMIC and turbosmart boost controller.

The SAFC11 will solve your probs if you get a boost cut defender as well. My suggestion if you want to make 200wrkw is to add up the cost of a boost cut defender and the SAFC11. Then look at the prices of the uni chips and other piggy backs. If the prices are close then go for the later as the UNI chip does ignition as well...

What you're experiencing is more than likely a misfire due to overfueling and subsequently your timing being retarded... not boost cut. If it feels fine after 6000rpm, then it's not boost cut.

if you don't want to spend much money, then go SAFC. If you dont mind spening $600b- $1000 extra (for the difference in the cost of the unit + tuning), then go the PFC. For the cost of the e-manage + ignition loom + tuning (which I think is more expensive as most tuners are more proficient with PFC which keeps costs down a little), you might as well go for the PFC.....

I got 200rwkw with a SAFCII + front mount + 3" turbo back + 9psi, I dont see why you cant hit that figure with 12psi + SAFC + good tuning

how much of a difference would you say the exhaust cam gear made Robo?

Not just in terms of rwkw, but in terms of tuning?

what made you decide to get it?

Maybe 5-8 rwkw, not too much, i didnt find heaps of difference but every little bit helps now when searching for every little kw.

Hey what can i say...any ECU that lets me piss around with it at home has major novelty value for me :P

Leave my timebomb out of it...it's almost ready for some *real* tuning LOL

finally, someone who isnt sensitive to some shit stirring! But i do really like the idea of being able to work with it yourself so easily and alot to be learnt about tuning right there i think.

mm thanks. Am leaning towards a SAFCII. Are they easy to tune? my mech. has never used one before I don't think, but he's done Wolf ECUs before. He should be able to work it out you think?

I cant find a price for purchase, fitment and tune of the e-manage. Anyone care to devulge this info?

Comparing to the SAFC isn't really fair....the SAFC can't do a fraction of what the e-manage can. The main thing to remember is people with Autos can't use the PFC.

And with the e-manage you get laptop software that a 2 year old could use, PFC isn't so simple and is time consuming especially if people are using the hand controller to tune.

You've really got to look at what your end use will be, I don't think the SAFC really has the tuning resolution required for any decent engine upgrades....E-manage allows injector upgrades/ AFM upgrades etc etc.

I'd go a PFC if you have a manual, and access to a decent tuner.

E-manage is better than SAFC, but for what this guy wants ~200rwkw, I wouldn't bother, as you can easily achieve this with a SAFC.

the e-manage in terms of tuning has a better resolution for fuel mapping, and allows you to re-map (or alter) ignition maps with the ignition harness.

SAFC also allows you use Z32 AFM as well.

The resolution on the SAFCII is pretty good.. I got my A/F ratios to a flat 12:1 (with the exceptio of 1 tiny dip where it goes to 11.5:1).

So yes, e-manage is better, but for the goals we are talking about here, the price, effort for tuning, and cost of tuning mean the SAFCII would be a better option.

I agree, on a manual Skylines I don't quite understand where the Emanage fits in. An SAFC is $400 and facilitates control over a/f ratios pretty well with a bolt on turbo. A PFC is $1.1K and enables control over fuel and ignition and a number of other parameters and easily handles a large range of mods.

If I add up how much an Emanage (fuel and ignition) costs including fitting (PFC's just plug in) don't I end up spending more than a PFC? :headspin:

    • Yes to both! Yes to standard ECU and tune, but exhaust is aftermarket. Unsure on brand. Actually have it sitting in at my desk haha! I have to set it up on my laptop but this is a great next step, will do. So I generally try to shift before 4.5K RPM most times. I largely don't do a lot of high-rev driving, but I will take it up to red 1-2x a week max, as I know the occasional "Italian tune-up" is good for these cars.  Oh wow, is this way better than what I'm getting.     • Old Son, did you re-use the Holden ABS in the new shell or try a different module?
    • Yeah, nah. I had the actuator rod off it today. The arm will not move at all. Neither out, nor in. Yeah, you'd think so, but I've been thinking about that. Even when the actuator rod fell all the way off at the beginning of this saga, it would build more boost and faster in lower gears than it would in higher gears, and you'd think that that was the opposite of what should happen. But I strongly suspect that there is a thing with the gearing getting the revs to rise faster, that there must be some transient effect with the gas flow rate rising quickly, that you don't get with the more steady state case of the higher gears. Keep in mind - the gate is not shut in either of my weirdnesses. So things are not "normal". We normally think about a turbo spooling up (below the wastegate target) with the gate shut. I have all sorts of mental models running now where the gate is a little bit open, and having it stuck open allowing gas out while it should be going through the turbine has all sorts of weird effects (in these mental models). I'm thinking in the higher gears, the ex mani pressure builds to the point where enough gases spill out the wastegate to just prevent the pressure rising much more at all, or just creeping up, all the whole the revs are increasing and getting closer to the point where a gear shift becomes necessary.
    • Is it possibly wastegate actuator itself is sticking, or even the rod to flapper? Otherwise I reckon things are getting a bit rusty/worn   Also odd it won't boost in 3rd to 5th, but will in 1st, I'd expect the other way around with it slightly open as there's more time on your way to redline for it to spin up
