VL commodore was running, started to blow black smoke on idle and eventually died. Wouldn't restart

Engine had

New spark plugs, New leads new cas, new oil & so on!

So I've checked spark on all 6 have spark, fuel at rail & checked injectors they are all spraying mist so working as far as that goes.

Re timed it to tdc on harmonic, and mark on cam, and #1 on dizzi.

Multiple times. Slightly before 1 exactly on 1, even spun the dizzi as tried

Rotor is turning when motor winds

Can hear fuelpump prime.

Checked tracks and caticupators in ecu all checked fine and was running prior anywhoo

Replaced fuel reg off my other going motor, tried coil, tried cap, rotor,

Tried other plugs and it goes to fire but doesn't, tried re timing. Checked to ensure its on #1 on each cycle of winding it by hand.

Tried unplugging MAF,TPS,

Got codes on computer for coolant sensor, no aircon,

  • Nickkk changed the title to RB30 VL PROBLEMS

Has spark on all 6, but did originally stall on black smoke  while idling all of a sudden. Wouldn't rev,

Fuel to rail,

Injectors spraying mist while winding

Brand new cas, plug, & tried 2 coils, was brand new plugs b4 it died, not even 50kms on them.

Tried fuel reg off going motor,

Tried AFM disconnected, connected

Sorter wants to fire but doesn't.

Checked main earth, plugs near battery, fuses, relays switching around.

Brand new external fuelpump

Fuel filter

Hear the fuelpump on the outside tank working. Inside I can't over the other one!

Only things.i haven't checked are

Tank fuel pump,

Get 3 codes in diagnosis mode

14 for coolant sensor, one for starter circuit which obviously I didn't have car running so it would clear the starter circuit code if I tried wounding it

  • 4 weeks later...

I've replaced coolant temp sensor, so that's cleared, done internal fuelpump  It now starts but only with afm unplugged. It'll idle and rev upto 2000 but plugged in it won't start. Plug it in while running and nothing changes so my guess is  that's not working, but closer! Idles and sounds good. No vacuum leaks from what I can hear, went over everything anyway

Brand new afm coming so I'll update on how that goes! But rather simple once you start ticking things off

    • Yeh... literally every time i jump on a forum, see an instagram post or see an engine bay at a car show, i get an idea and add it to my 'to do' list. So what started off as, hey can u just make a couple of intake hard pipes because my dumbass bought the wrong apexi kit, blew out into a 2 week job including braided brake lines & custom bash kit for the front lip haha.  Getting Luke from A4E engineering to make a full custom exhaust with a controllable aes dump valve so i can actually switch between quiet and loud, because right now its just loud all day every day. Then after that go and get the tune redone flex e85 & 98 as i get bugger all milage from e85, makes going for longer drivers difficult
    • Car looks clean as. You ended up getting quite a bit done 馃槀  So what's the plan for the exhaust?
    • The only Neo rods that were any different to any other RB25 rods were the DET ones, and they were the same as RB26. Here is a Neo DET rod. O5U part number visible. Here is a post in a thread here on SAU with evidence from someone who has done this before. There are photos in the thread of normal RB25 rods.
    • Sure, but why assume that will be the case forever? And why assume you'll be able to do an oil change to swap back to a stock drain bolt before that happens? And does it even matter when I change the oil at fairly short intervals? Life can be funny sometimes and unexpected things can happen. Like breaking a collarbone so you can't do any work on your car for a few months but the oil change is due so you have to take it to somewhere and hope they don't do something stupid like stacking the new drain plug washer on top of the old one.
    • Do u know how to identify the rods are rb25 or neo ones? Can u look into the pics and tell me is they de or de neo ones. Its confusing becoz my motor has de neo head but block is 25de 75t, so really confusing me about rods, crank.
